Alignment work changes what a lift needs to do. Suddenly clearance, arm geometry, symmetry, and turn-plate accommodation matter in ways they don’t for a general repair bay. This is the pre-purchase checklist we walked him through so he could commit to a configuration without discovering three months in that the geometry didn’t support the work he actually planned to do.

Start With Ceiling Height, Not Capacity
Every farm shop conversation starts with capacity — the owner already knows he wants 10,000 or 12,000 pounds — but the number that actually decides the configuration is ceiling clearance under the truss. Overhead automotive two post lifts have a bar across the top that connects the columns, and that bar sits several inches above the top of the columns. If the shop has a twelve-foot side wall but the truss drops the usable clearance to eleven feet at the peak, an overhead-style lift may not fit at all, or it may fit but hit the door track when it fully extends.
We ask the owner to measure three points: bottom of truss at the lift location, clear height at the door opening, and any obstructions running horizontally like conduit or LED strips. Then we cross-reference that against the max-column-plus-overhead-bar spec for whatever lift the owner is looking at. Once ceiling clearance narrows the choice, alignment work biases it further. Baseplate automotive two post lifts route the equalization cables through a bar that sits between the columns at floor level rather than across the top. That configuration keeps overhead clearance open, which is helpful for a shop with lower ceilings, but the crossover bar at the base creates a driving hazard technicians have to remember and a trip hazard for anyone walking a wheel-and-tire assembly around the vehicle.
For alignment work specifically, we prefer symmetric geometry over asymmetric, because symmetric columns center the vehicle exactly between the posts and give the alignment tech equal access to both front wheels for turn plates. Asymmetric geometry rotates the vehicle for easier door swing, but that rotation puts one front wheel closer to a column and makes turn-plate placement awkward. If the shop plans to do alignments as a regular part of the workload, symmetric wins even if it costs a little door clearance. We flagged both trade-offs for the Marion owner before he committed.
Concrete Spec Nobody Talks About Until It Fails
Farm shops are famous for slabs that were poured decades ago at unknown thicknesses with unknown rebar patterns. Every manufacturer of automotive two post lifts specifies a minimum concrete depth and PSI rating — usually four and a quarter inches at 3000 PSI or better — and if the slab doesn’t meet that, the anchors can pull under load. We had a shop in central Iowa call us three years after their install because a column had shifted an inch under a heavy pickup, and when we saw the slab we could see the anchors had pulled cones of concrete out of a substandard pour.
The fix for a bad slab is either a saw-cut and re-pour of the anchor zone, or a full section replacement. Both are expensive relative to the lift. If the slab is old and unknown, we recommend having a local concrete contractor confirm depth with a rebar-safe drill before the install date. Farm vehicles are a specific mix — 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickups, occasional flatbeds, dually rear axles, lifted trucks with aftermarket suspension. Frame-cradle adapters and truck adapter stacks solve this. We spec them into the initial package rather than making the owner order them separately after the lift arrives and doesn’t fit the truck he actually planned to service. For the Marion shop we added a set of tall truck adapters and confirmed the low-end pad drop was still short enough to catch a lowered pickup or a passenger sedan. Electrical, Air, and Utility Sequencing
Farm buildings often have single-phase 220V available but limited air compressor capacity. Most automotive two post lifts run on single-phase 220V, so power is usually not the constraint. Air is different — arm restraint gears need a small pulse of shop air to disengage on descent, and a small compressor can handle that fine, but a shop that also runs an impact wrench and a tire machine off the same tank will feel pressure drop.
We ask about the compressor tank size, CFM rating, and the number of simultaneous users during peak activity. If the tank is small, we recommend a dedicated air line to the lift rather than tapping a shared drop. Electrical also needs a dedicated breaker sized to the pump spec — usually 20 amp for a single-phase 10K pump — and enough conductor length back to the panel to avoid voltage drop. Rural install locations add logistics wrinkles that urban shops never see. Delivery access matters — freight trucks with lift gates get down most gravel roads, but not all of them. Muddy spring conditions can force a delayed install by a week or two. If the shop is more than an hour outside our normal service radius, we quote the install with a fixed travel allowance rather than mileage so the owner sees the total upfront.
