What Actually Separates the Two Designs

Mechanically, both styles do the same job: two columns, two carriages, four arms, and a hydraulic system that raises a vehicle by its frame or pinch welds. The difference is where the equalization cables, hydraulic hose, and shutoff bar live. An overhead model routes them through a crossbeam bridging the tops of the columns, which is also where the automatic shutoff bar sits to stop a tall vehicle before it hits your ceiling. A baseplate model routes everything through a low steel plate on the floor between the columns, leaving the space above the vehicle completely open.

That single routing decision drives everything else. Overhead units generally need somewhere between 11 and 12 feet of clear ceiling depending on rise and model; some low-ceiling versions squeeze under less. Baseplate units can go into a building with 10 feet or even slightly less, because nothing has to clear the top of the columns. In exchange, you get a raised strip across the floor that you will roll a transmission jack, a floor jack, and a creeper over for the life of the lift. Ceiling Height Is the First Gate, Not the Last

We measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. In central Iowa that obstruction is rarely the deck itself. It is a gas unit heater hung on chain, a run of conduit, a sprinkler main, a garage door track and opener rail, or in pole buildings, the bottom chord of a truss. That is a detail people miss until installation day, which is exactly why we ask for photos of the whole bay and not just a number.

What Baseplate Buys You and What It Costs You

Baseplate lifts solve the ceiling problem elegantly, and they are the reason a huge number of Iowa garages and older commercial buildings have a two post lift at all. Anything with a low deck, a finished basement above, or a mezzanine is a natural candidate. They also tend to be a little simpler to set up because there is no beam to hoist and bolt at column height, which matters when a homeowner is helping us in a tight residential garage.

The trade-off is that floor plate. It is not tall, and most shops adapt to it within a week, but it is permanently in the traffic path between the columns. If you routinely roll a heavy transmission jack under a truck, drag an oil drain across the bay, or work off a creeper, you will notice it. The cables and hose inside that plate are also lower to the ground and closer to whatever gets spilled, swept, or dropped in that zone. None of that is a reason to avoid baseplate — it is a reason to keep the plate clean and to know what you are signing up for. Why Most Commercial Shops Still Land on Overhead

Given the choice and the ceiling, professional shops overwhelmingly pick overhead, and the reason is throughput. A clean floor between the columns means jacks, drain pans, tire carts, and technicians move without interruption. In a bay that cycles eight or ten vehicles a day, small friction adds up. Overhead units also come standard with that shutoff bar, which is a genuine safety feature in buildings with mixed vehicle heights — it stops a lifted van before the roof finds a joist.

There is a service argument too. Overhead cables and hoses are up out of the mess, easier to inspect visually during an annual, and easier to swap when they age out. Concrete, Anchors, and Why the Floor Matters More Than the Beam

Both styles transfer the entire load into your slab through anchor bolts, and the slab is where we see the most avoidable problems. Manufacturers publish minimum thickness and compressive strength requirements — commonly around four inches of properly cured concrete at 3,000 PSI or better, more for higher-capacity units. A lot of Iowa farm shops and older garages do not meet that, and the fix is cutting out a section and pouring a proper pad.

Here is where the two designs differ slightly. A baseplate lift ties the two columns together through that floor plate, which adds a mechanical connection between them. An overhead ties them together at the top. Neither eliminates the anchor requirement, and neither should be viewed as a workaround for bad concrete. We have been called out to shops with columns that had visibly shifted, and in every case it traced back to thin slab, cracked slab, anchors set too close to a control joint, or a previous installer skipping the torque spec. Where cost shows up meaningfully is in what a building change would cost you: relocating a heater to fit an overhead, or cutting and pouring concrete either way.

Over ten or fifteen years of ownership, the differences narrow further. Both styles need annual inspection, cable adjustment, hydraulic checks, and eventually cable and hose replacement. The unit that lasts is the one that got a proper install on adequate concrete and then got looked at once a year.
