When a restoration shop in the Des Moines metro asked us to plan their build-out around a BendPak 12000 lb 2 post lift, we ended up sketching two completely different bay layouts before picking one. Restoration and metal work isn’t like general repair — bodies come off frames, panels get pulled and set aside, and welding carts need room to roam. We put the two configurations side by side for the shop owner, and walking through that comparison is the best way to explain what actually matters when you’re sequencing a garage build-out around a two post lift instead of just bolting one to whatever slab happens to be open.

Configuration One: Lift Against the Back Wall

Our first layout put the BendPak 12000 lb 2 post lift tight against the rear wall of the bay, leaving the entire front two-thirds of the space open for a rolling cart of body panels, a bead roller, and a welding station. On paper this looked efficient — you drive a car straight in, lift it, and have a huge open floor for parts storage and fabrication work right in front of the vehicle.

In practice, this layout had one real problem for restoration work specifically: once a body comes off a frame on a two post lift, the tech needs to walk all the way around both the raised body and the rolling chassis cart underneath it, and a rear-wall placement meant that circulation path constantly crossed the fabrication station. We flagged this during planning rather than after installation, which is exactly why we walk every shop through actual workflow, not just square footage, before columns go in the concrete.

Configuration Two: Lift Centered With Perimeter Work Zones

The second layout we sketched centered the lift in the bay with roughly equal clearance on all four sides, pushing welding, sandblasting, and panel storage to the perimeter walls instead of the open floor. This meant slightly less raw open space, but it gave the shop a full 360-degree walk-around on the raised vehicle without crossing any other workstation.

For a restoration and metal work shop, that walk-around clearance turned out to be the deciding factor. Bodies coming off frames need access from every angle — rockers, floor pans, wheel wells — and a BendPak two post lift centered in the bay let two techs work opposite sides of a vehicle simultaneously without tripping over a welding cart. We ended up recommending this centered configuration, and it’s the one that went into the concrete.

Ceiling Height and Rise for Frame-Off Work

Restoration shops doing frame-off work need more vertical clearance than a typical brake-and-tire bay, because at some point the body is up on the lift while the frame sits separately on stands below or beside it. Floor Space for Panels, Carts, and Media Blasting

One thing that separates a restoration shop’s build-out from a standard repair bay is the sheer volume of loose panels, trim, and hardware that needs a home during a project. In both layouts we planned for rolling panel racks near the lift but far enough away that a rolling cart couldn’t drift into the lift’s swing radius while the columns were in operation.

We also accounted for a media blasting cabinet the shop wanted to add later, which needed its own dust containment and distance from the lift to keep abrasive grit away from cables and hydraulic components. Sequencing this into the build-out now, even though the cabinet wasn’t purchased yet, meant the electrical and ventilation rough-in happened once instead of requiring a second disruptive phase after the lift was already anchored and running.

Concrete Requirements Specific to Metal Work Shops

Restoration and metal fabrication work often means dropped tools, welding slag, and the occasional engine hoist rolling across the same slab that anchors the lift. Before finalizing either layout, we cored the existing concrete to confirm thickness and condition, because a BendPak 12000 lb 2 post lift needs a specific minimum slab depth and rebar-free anchor zone to perform safely under full capacity.

The Des Moines metro shop’s slab was solid but had a section with visible surface damage from years of dropped equipment near the old bay. We routed the anchor pattern around that damaged section entirely rather than patching and hoping, since anchor integrity is not something we compromise on for a lift that’s regularly holding a vehicle body several feet in the air over a tech working underneath.

Arm Reach for Trucks, Cars, and Project Vehicles

Restoration shops don’t just work on one type of vehicle — this shop had everything from a lowered muscle car project to a full-size pickup awaiting a frame swap. The arm reach and adjustability on a BendPak two post lift became a real factor in our recommendation, since shorter arms struggle to find factory lift points on some lowered project cars while still needing enough reach for a longer-wheelbase truck.

We finished with a full walkthrough alongside the shop owner and lead fabricator, running the BendPak 12000 lb 2 post lift up and down empty several times, checking arm swing clearance against the new perimeter workstations, and confirming the safety locks engaged cleanly at multiple heights. That final check, done with the actual finished layout in place rather than an empty slab, is what catches the small clearance issues before a vehicle is ever on the lift.
