Old shop floors poured decades ago for lighter service work simply weren’t engineered for that. We’ve walked into more than one Iowa shop where the existing slab was four inches of plain concrete with no rebar at all, poured back when the building went up as a simple storage garage.

For this Sioux City build, we pulled the shop’s original construction records and also did a core check ourselves. That’s not extra hassle for the sake of it — it’s the difference between a lift that sits solid for fifteen years and a lift that starts working its anchors loose within eighteen months. Anchor pull-out isn’t a BendPak problem, it’s a concrete problem, and it shows up as columns that feel slightly different in torque, doors that don’t seat quite right, or a rack that starts to walk. What Slab Thickness a 14K Lift Actually Needs

BendPak’s engineering spec for a 14,000-lb four-post generally calls for a minimum of 4 inches of structurally sound concrete, but that minimum assumes good soil compaction underneath and a properly cured slab with a strength rating of at least 3,000 PSI. In practice, for a shop doing general daily maintenance on heavy trucks and off-road builds, we like to see closer to 5 or 6 inches, especially in a newer pour where full cure strength is still developing. Thinner slabs aren’t automatically disqualified, but they change where the columns can land and how much anchor engagement we can get.

The Sioux City shop’s bay had two different pours from two different eras — the original garage slab and a newer addition poured when they expanded a few years back. We measured both. The older section came in just under 4.5 inches, adequate but tight. The newer pour was a full 6 inches with a proper base. We steered the layout so all four columns landed on the newer, thicker section rather than splitting the load across the seam. That kind of layout decision is something a lot of installers skip past, and it’s exactly the kind of detail that keeps a 4 post lift from developing uneven wear over its service life.

Rebar, Wire Mesh, and Why It Changes the Anchor Plan

Rebar and wire mesh are a mixed blessing when you’re anchoring a bendpak 14k 4 post lift. Reinforcement adds tensile strength to the slab overall, which is good, but it also means our anchor bit can hit steel exactly where an anchor point needs to go. We’ve had installs where a column bolt pattern had to shift two or three inches because a rebar grid was sitting right where the manufacturer template called for a hole. That’s a normal part of the job, not a red flag, and it’s one more reason we don’t let a customer’s contractor set anchor locations sight-unseen before we’ve been on site.

On this job we ran a rebar scanner across all four column footprints before drilling anything. Two of the eight anchor points needed to shift slightly to avoid cutting into the grid, which is a fast adjustment when you’re doing it before drilling, and a much bigger headache after. We also flagged for the shop owner that any future concrete work near the lift — say, adding a drain or running new floor conduit — needs to account for where those anchors sit now. A four-post lift isn’t something you casually reroute utilities around once it’s bolted down and loaded with trucks on both platforms.

Daily Maintenance Loads Are Different From Occasional Lifts

This shop isn’t running the lift once a week for a big alignment job — they’re running it daily, sometimes multiple cycles a day, for general daily maintenance on trucks that already carry off-road weight from winches, bumpers, and skid plates. That kind of duty cycle matters when we’re sizing anchors and thinking about slab fatigue. A lift bolted into marginal concrete might survive occasional light use for years and then fail under sustained daily heavy use in a fraction of that time. We spec anchors and torque specs assuming the worst-case realistic use, not the best case.

We also talked with the shop about runway placement relative to their bay doors and how they’d be driving vehicles on and off daily. We recommended — and the shop agreed — to place the entire lift footprint on the newer 6-inch pour, shift two anchor points to dodge the rebar grid, and add a short waiting period since that section of concrete was still inside its full cure window. That last point matters: concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks after it looks fully set, and rushing anchor installation into a slab that’s only 60% cured is a common cause of early anchor failure that gets blamed on the lift itself.

We scheduled the install for a few weeks out to let the newer pour finish curing properly, which the shop appreciated once we explained the reasoning. Nobody wants to wait, but nobody wants a lift that starts leaning either.

Freight, Forklift, and Site Prep Before Install Day

These units ship heavy and typically arrive on a pallet that needs a forklift or pallet jack capable of handling several thousand pounds per crate. This shop had a forklift already, which sped things along.
