It’s a fair question, and the honest answer is that it depends on your bay height, your alignment console setup, and how you want techs moving around the vehicle. Overhead Configuration: Clean Floor, Higher Ceiling Demand

An overhead-style BendPak 4-post alignment lift routes the alignment sensor tower and camera targets above the vehicle rather than out along the floor. For a busy alignment shop, this keeps the floor around the lift completely clear — no floor-mounted turn plate wiring runs to trip over, no console cart parked awkwardly beside the runways. Techs can walk a full circle around the vehicle without stepping over anything, which matters when you’re doing four-wheel alignments on trucks with wide track widths.

The tradeoff is ceiling height. A baseplate configuration mounts the alignment components at floor level between or alongside the runways instead of overhead. This is the more common retrofit choice we install in Council Bluffs shops with standard 10 to 12 foot ceilings, since it doesn’t demand extra vertical space above the lift. For a shop converting an existing service bay rather than building new, baseplate is very often the only realistic option once you measure the trusses.

The tradeoff runs the other direction — you give up some floor space around the lift, and cable runs or turn plate hardware sit low enough that techs need to be mindful of foot placement, especially in a busy shop with more than one person working the bay. We generally recommend baseplate for shops running a mixed workload where alignment is one of several services in that bay, since it’s less disruptive to swap between alignment jobs and general lift work. For a shop doing alignments as a primary revenue driver with the ceiling height to spare, we’ll usually still point toward overhead first.

Matching the Lift Capacity to Your Actual Workload

Before configuration even enters the conversation, we ask every Council Bluffs shop owner what they’re actually lifting. The runways need cutouts or built-in turn plate pockets so the front wheels can rotate freely during camber and toe adjustments, and you need slip plates or a rear slip assembly so the rear wheels aren’t bound up while the front end is being measured. Shops that skip this step end up buying turn plates and slip plates as an aftermarket bolt-on later, which works but rarely fits as cleanly as a runway built for it from the start. Electrical, Air, and Console Placement
