Myth #1: If the Cable Isn’t Frayed, It’s Not a Problem

Techs assume that visible fraying is the only warning sign, so they glance at the cable, see no obvious wire strands sticking out, and move on. In reality, a cable can look smooth on the outside while it’s already stretched internally, corroded from the inside where moisture worked its way into the strand core, or unevenly loaded because one side has taken more weight than the other for months. On a 4-post, the four corners aren’t always sharing the load equally, especially once you start adding rolling jacks, transmission jacks, or battery-pull equipment that shifts weight toward one end of the platform.

Humidity and temperature cycling in an unheated bay accelerates internal corrosion on cables that see winter salt tracked in on tires, even indoors. Myth #2: EV and Hybrid Work Doesn’t Put Extra Stress on the Lift
Battery packs are heavy, dense, and usually pulled from underneath — which means more time with the vehicle sitting loaded on the platform while a tech works, rather than a quick brake job where the car’s up and down in twenty minutes. Longer static load time is harder on cables than most shop owners realize, because the cable is holding tension continuously instead of cycling. Add driveline access work where techs are dropping subframes or crossmembers, and you’ve got uneven weight distribution sitting on those cables for extended periods.
We’re not saying a bendpak 4-post can’t handle EV and hybrid work — it absolutely can, that’s exactly what these platforms are built for. But the duty cycle changes, and your inspection interval needs to change with it. A shop doing quick oil changes and tire work can often get away with a longer interval between cable checks than a shop doing sustained EV battery service five days a week. If your work has shifted toward exhaust and driveline access on electrified vehicles, tighten up your inspection schedule instead of assuming the lift doesn’t care what’s on it.
Myth #3: The Lift Will Warn You Before Something Breaks
Bendpak locks and safety mechanisms are good, but they’re not a substitute for cable inspection — they’re a backup for when something has already gone wrong. Waiting for the safety lock to catch a dropping platform means you’ve already had a cable failure. The whole point of an inspection interval is catching wear before it turns into a failure event, not relying on the safety system to save the day after the fact.
We recommend a real hands-on cable check every 90 days for shops running heavy daily use, and at minimum every six months for lighter-use shops. That means physically running a gloved hand along the length of each cable, checking for flat spots, kinks, rust bleed, and uneven strand diameter, not just eyeballing it from across the bay. Pair that with a visual check on the pulleys and sheaves — a cable riding wrong on a worn pulley wears unevenly and fails faster than one on a properly aligned sheave. If you’ve never had someone show you what a worn cable actually feels like versus a healthy one, that’s worth a service call before you set your own interval.
What Cable Wear Actually Looks Like on a 4-Post
On a bendpak 4-post, the cables run from the platform up through the columns and over pulleys to keep all four corners synchronized as the lift travels. Wear typically shows up first at the points where the cable bends around a pulley or sheave — that’s where flexing stress concentrates. Look for a change in cable diameter at those bend points, rust discoloration that’s darker or more pronounced than the rest of the cable, and any spot where the cable feels less flexible than the rest of its length, almost stiff or crunchy.
Uneven platform travel is another giveaway. If one corner of your 4-post lift is noticeably slower to rise than the others, or the platform doesn’t sit level at full height anymore, that’s very often a cable stretching more than its counterparts, not a hydraulic issue. Don’t just re-adjust and move on — figure out why that cable stretched differently. Usually it traces back to uneven loading habits in the shop, which is a training fix as much as a parts fix.
Setting a Realistic Inspection Schedule for Your Shop
Every shop thinks their situation is unique, and in a way it is — but the inspection math is pretty simple once you account for cycle count and load type. A shop running a bendpak 4-post for storage only, where cars go up once and sit for weeks, needs far less frequent cable inspection than a working bay cycling the lift multiple times a day for exhaust, driveline, or EV service. Count your daily lift cycles for a week and use that number to set your interval — high-cycle bays should be on a monthly visual check with a quarterly hands-on inspection, moderate-use bays can stretch to quarterly visual and semi-annual hands-on.
Write the date on a shop calendar or in your maintenance log every time you do the check, even if you find nothing. That log matters two ways: it protects you if a cable ever does fail and you need to show you were maintaining the equipment, and it builds a pattern over time so you notice when something’s degrading faster than it should. A shop with no log is a shop guessing. A shop with a log is a shop that catches the problem before it becomes an insurance claim.
When to Replace vs. When to Keep Watching
Not every worn cable needs immediate replacement, but the threshold for “replace now” should be lower than most shops set it. Any broken strand, any spot with visible rust pitting into the wire itself, any kink that doesn’t straighten back out, or any noticeable stretch compared to the other three cables means replace it — don’t wait for it to get worse. Cables on a bendpak 4-post are a matched-set system in practice, even though they’re technically independent; running one badly worn cable alongside three healthy ones just accelerates uneven wear everywhere else.
