Why Bay Layout Matters More Than the Lift Spec Sheet

Shop owners spend a lot of time comparing weight capacity and runway length on a bendpak 4-post car lift, and almost none thinking about how it sits relative to the walls, the neighboring bay, and the tool cart path. We’ve walked into shops in Davenport and across eastern Iowa where the lift itself was the right choice, but the placement made every CV axle pull a two-person job because there wasn’t room to swing a slide hammer or roll a transmission jack under the vehicle’s front end.

Before we run a single anchor bolt, we ask what jobs the bay will actually see day to day. A shop doing mostly alignments needs turnplate clearance and space to walk a full circle around the vehicle. CV axle and half-shaft jobs are different from a basic tire rotation because you need real access to the inner and outer joints, and often you’re pulling the axle straight out toward one side of the vehicle. On a bendpak 4-post car lift, that means the column spacing and the runway width both matter. If the columns are too close to the vehicle’s front corners, there’s no room to angle a slide hammer or maneuver a puller without hitting steel.

Approach and Overhead Clearance in a Working Shop

Davenport shops often deal with older buildings, lower ceiling trusses, and bay doors that weren’t built with a full-rise four-post lift in mind. We measure overhead clearance at full lift height before we ever quote the job, because a vehicle raised for CV axle work needs headroom for the tech standing underneath, not just clearance for the lift structure itself. We train every shop we install for on engaging the mechanical safety locks the moment the vehicle reaches working height, not just when it’s parked overnight.
