A body shop foreman in east-central Iowa called us last month with a straightforward question: he was quoting BendPak 4 post lifts for a new bay dedicated to exhaust and driveline access, and the shop owner wanted to know if the existing slab was up to it. This is the single most common question we answer. Most buyers focus on the lift model and skip the floor. That’s backwards. The Concrete Question Every Body Shop Asks First

Every body shop foreman knows the shop’s slab is not the same everywhere. There’s a pour date near the front bay from 2011 and a repour in the back from a settling problem in 2018. Those two slabs are not equivalent. When we quote BendPak 4 post lifts for a shop, we ask for the age of the slab in that specific bay, the original pour depth, and whether anyone has cored it to check. If nobody can answer, we bring a rebar scanner and a core sample kit to the site visit. It’s not overkill — it’s the difference between a lift that lasts twenty years and a lift that pulls anchors in eighteen months.

Slab Thickness Rules for BendPak 4 Post Lifts

The general minimum we work to for a commercial-capacity BendPak 4 post lift is a four-inch slab of 3,000 PSI concrete on compacted subbase. That’s the floor, not the recommendation. For a body shop doing heavy driveline and exhaust work — where trucks sit up in the air for hours and the columns take repeated lateral loading — we’d rather see six inches at 3,500 to 4,000 PSI. That extra two inches gives the anchor bolts real bite and prevents the classic cone failure where a column pulls a chunk of concrete out of the floor during a hard load event. The manufacturer spec on the specific model is always the final word, but four inches is a floor.

Rebar, Rebar Spacing, and Why It Matters

Rebar is what keeps a slab from splitting when it flexes. For BendPak 4 post lifts in a commercial body shop, we want to see 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch rebar on twelve-inch centers, both directions, mid-slab. That’s a grid, not welded wire mesh laid on the surface. If you scan the floor and the mesh is sitting on the vapor barrier because it was never lifted during the pour, you have a slab in name only. Rebar tied and chaired mid-slab is what gives the concrete its actual working strength under a point load like an anchor bolt. This is the single most common problem we find on older shop pours.

When Your East-Central Iowa Shop Slab Won’t Cut It

We’ve walked into east-central Iowa body shops where the pour is three and a half inches, no rebar, over uncompacted gravel from a mid-1970s expansion. That slab is not suitable for BendPak 4 post lifts of any capacity. Anchoring into it will hold for a while, then a column will start to walk, and a customer’s car will be up in the air on a lift that isn’t level. The fix in those cases is a saw-cut and repour in a defined footprint — often a ten-by-twenty section under and around the lift, poured to spec with proper rebar and cured for a full 28 days before install. It’s a real project, but it’s the honest answer.

How We Inspect a Slab Before We Quote

Our slab inspection is a walk-through, a hammer sound test, a rebar scan with a handheld unit, and — if the numbers look marginal — a core sample. The scan tells us depth and rebar spacing without breaking the floor. The core tells us actual PSI, aggregate quality, and whether there’s a moisture barrier under the slab. This inspection takes an hour and costs less than a single wasted install day. We build it into every commercial quote. If the slab passes, we move to anchor selection. If it fails, we tell you what a repour looks like before we take a deposit.

The Anchor Bolt Story We Won’t Repeat

A shop in east-central Iowa a few years back asked us to install BendPak 4 post lifts in a bay where the previous installer had used undersized wedge anchors in a marginal slab. Three columns held. One walked half an inch over the first eight months, and the lift developed a rock that got worse. When we pulled the anchors, the concrete cone under one was fractured — a classic failure. We repoured that footprint, used the manufacturer’s specified anchor size, torqued to spec, and the lift has been dead level for four years since. Anchor size and slab quality are not places to save fifty dollars.

Straight-Ahead Buyer’s Guide to Getting It Right

Here’s the buyer’s guide in one paragraph. Before you buy, get someone with a rebar scanner into your bay. Confirm slab thickness of at least four inches — ideally six — of 3,000 PSI or better, with 3/8-inch rebar on twelve-inch centers mid-slab. Use the manufacturer’s specified anchor size, torque them to the specified value with a calibrated wrench, and don’t compromise.
