Year one: purchase, install, and the accessory pass

Year one is the biggest single-year cost bucket by a wide margin, and it is worth being honest about the full package. The overlanding builder started with a light-commercial platform in the 9K to 12K range because the fleet included lifted trucks with heavy bumpers and aftermarket armor. The platform itself was one line item; freight from the west-coast warehouse to the Des Moines metro was another; install was a third. Between years sixteen and eighteen, most heavily cycled platforms will hit their second cable replacement window. At this point the shop faces a decision: replace and keep running, or trade in and upgrade. Both paths are defensible. Replacement is cheaper in the short term and extends the platform’s useful life by another five to seven years. Upgrading captures the trade-in value while it is still meaningful, and puts a newer platform under the shop’s most-productive workflow.

The overlanding builder is not at this window yet, but we have already talked through the framework. His plan is condition-based: if the platform is running clean at year sixteen, he replaces cables and keeps going. If the platform has developed any structural concerns — column plumb drift, runway wear, anchor issues — he trades in and upgrades. Documented maintenance history is the biggest lever on the trade-in number, which is why we push customers to keep the maintenance binder from day one. A platform without paperwork trades in at a discount; a platform with a full binder trades in at a premium.

Years nineteen and twenty: the trade-in and the total number

Year twenty is where the twenty-year total cost of ownership either surprises the shop pleasantly or unpleasantly. A well-maintained platform with documented history usually trades in at 30 to 50 percent of its original purchase price, sometimes more if the used market is hot.
