When a builder in Waukee called us about pulling half-shafts on a lifted overland rig, the question wasn’t whether the BendPak XPR-10AS could handle the job — it’s a 10,000 lb two-post that handles CV axle and half-shaft work all day. The real question was overhead or baseplate configuration. That decision shapes how the lift sits in the bay, how much headroom you keep, and whether you can drive a tall build in and out without ducking under a crossbar every single time. We install these across Iowa, and this particular job is a good case study for anyone weighing the same decision.

The Waukee Job: Why Configuration Mattered Here

The owner runs a 4Runner and a full-size truck built for overlanding, both riding on lift kits with aftermarket CV axles and heavier-duty half-shafts than stock. He needed a lift that could handle repeated axle and shaft swaps without fighting the vehicle’s ride height, and he wanted to know upfront whether the BendPak XPR-10AS would clear his tallest build with an overhead configuration or if baseplate made more sense in his detached garage.

We measured his ceiling — just under 12 feet in a pole building with exposed trusses — and looked at the height of his lifted truck with 35s mounted. An overhead XPR-10AS needs adequate ceiling clearance for the top beam and safety bar, and with his truck’s roofline plus the lift’s rise, it was tight but workable. Baseplate configuration removes the overhead beam entirely, relying on the floor-anchored base for structural rigidity instead. For his shop, with taller vehicles and lower ceiling clearance than a typical commercial bay, baseplate was the safer call, and it’s what we installed.

Overhead XPR-10AS: When It’s the Right Call

Overhead configuration is the traditional two-post setup — a beam runs across the top connecting both columns, tying the whole structure together and typically allowing a lower floor-level footprint since the columns don’t need floor-mounted cross bracing in the same way. Most commercial shops with 14-foot or higher ceilings default to overhead because it’s proven, cost-effective, and doesn’t require oversized anchor bolts to compensate for lost rigidity.

The tradeoff is headroom. If you’re running tall trucks, roof racks, ladder rigs, or overland builds with rooftop tents, the overhead beam and safety bar can eat into your usable clearance fast. We’ve had customers roll a build in, lift it, and realize the tent rack clears the beam by inches. For most daily-driver bays this isn’t an issue. For dedicated overlanding and off-road builder shops, it’s worth measuring twice. The BendPak XPR-10AS in overhead form is still our default recommendation whenever ceiling height allows, simply because it’s a slightly more economical and structurally simple install.

Baseplate XPR-10AS: Trading Beam for Clearance

Baseplate configuration swaps the top beam for a floor-level base connecting the columns, which opens up your entire vertical space above the vehicle. For the Waukee shop, this meant no risk of a roof rack or long-travel suspension component catching on anything overhead, ever — full clearance from floor to trusses.

The catch is floor loading and anchoring. Baseplate lifts put more stress on the anchors and the slab itself since there’s no overhead beam to help carry structural load, so we’re stricter about slab thickness and rebar when we install this configuration. We also charge slightly more for baseplate versions of the BendPak XPR-10AS because of the added steel in the base assembly. For a builder doing frequent CV axle and half-shaft replacement on tall rigs, that extra cost bought him the ability to run any vehicle he owns, present or future, without a second thought about clearance.

CV Axle and Half-Shaft Work: Arm Placement Matters More Than Configuration

Regardless of overhead or baseplate, the real day-to-day difference for axle and half-shaft jobs comes down to arm reach and pad placement, not the top structure. The XPR-10AS’s telescoping arms and asymmetric column offset let you position the vehicle so the front wheels hang slightly outboard, giving you clear access to swing a half-shaft or drop a CV axle without the column blocking your swing radius.

We walked the Waukee customer through arm positioning on his first few lifts, since lifted trucks with wider track width need the arms extended further than stock vehicles. Get the pad placement wrong and you’ll find yourself repositioning the vehicle mid-job, which gets old fast when you’re doing axle work regularly. Once he had his go-to pad points marked on the floor with tape, every subsequent lift went faster. This is true whether you buy overhead or baseplate — the column and arm geometry doesn’t change between the two configurations.

Anchoring and Slab Requirements for Each Configuration

Baseplate configurations generally call for a slightly thicker slab and more conservative anchor spacing because the base plate is doing more of the structural work that the overhead beam would otherwise share. We check slab thickness, rebar or mesh presence, and any control joints nearby before we ever set anchors on either version, but we’re more conservative with baseplate installs specifically.

In older Iowa outbuildings and detached garages — common for the overlanding and off-road crowd who often build in pole barns rather than attached garages — slab quality varies a lot. We’ve turned down installs where the existing slab wouldn’t safely support a baseplate XPR-10AS and recommended either an overhead configuration instead or a new slab pour. If you’re planning a build like the Waukee shop, get your slab checked before you commit to a configuration, not after the lift arrives.

Pricing Differences Between the Two Configurations

The BendPak XPR-10AS overhead version generally runs a bit less than the baseplate version, largely due to the additional steel and machining in the base assembly. Freight and installation costs are comparable between the two since both are still full two-post 10,000 lb lifts with similar crating and rigging requirements.

For the Waukee customer, the price difference between configurations was a small fraction of his total project cost once you factored in delivery and installation, and it was money well spent given his ceiling constraints and vehicle lineup. We always quote both configurations side by side for customers who are on the fence, because seeing the numbers next to each other usually makes the decision obvious once ceiling height and vehicle type are factored in.

What We’d Tell Any Iowa Builder Before They Order

Measure your ceiling height at the actual install location, not just a general estimate, and measure your tallest vehicle including racks, tents, or ladders. Overhead configuration is our default recommendation when you have the clearance, since it’s the more common setup with a slightly lower price point and identical arm geometry for CV axle and half-shaft work. Baseplate configuration is the right call when clearance is tight, when you’re running very tall builds, or when you simply want the peace of mind of an unobstructed ceiling.
