A tire-and-alignment shop owner up in northeast Iowa asked us a good question last winter: he was bidding on a contract that required all lifting equipment to be third-party certified, and he had no idea whether the car lift in his front bay qualified. He’d bought it used from a closing dealership a decade earlier and there was no paperwork in the building. We drove up, found the data plate under a layer of tire dressing overspray, and the answer was no — the model had never been submitted for certification. That conversation is more common than you’d think, and it’s worth walking through what ALI Gold actually means, how to verify it on equipment you already own, and what it changes about how you buy your next one.

What ALI Gold Actually Certifies

The Automotive Lift Institute runs the only third-party certification program in North America for vehicle lifting equipment, and the gold oval label is the mark of it. People assume it’s a brand endorsement or a quality award. It isn’t. It’s a validation that a specific model — not the brand, the model — was independently tested against ANSI/ALI ALCTV, the American national standard for lift construction, testing, and validation, and that the manufacturing facility is subject to ongoing audit.

What testing covers matters. The lab loads the equipment to rated capacity and beyond, checks that the structure holds at 150 percent of rating without permanent deformation, verifies the mechanical locks engage and hold, verifies that a hydraulic failure results in controlled behavior rather than a drop, tests the electrical system for compliance, and reviews the manual, the warning decals, the capacity markings, and the operator instructions. The audit piece is the part people undervalue: a manufacturer can’t get one sample through the lab and then quietly change steel suppliers. The plant gets checked. When we spec a car lift for a shop that needs certified equipment, that’s the whole value proposition — somebody with no financial stake in the sale verified the claims, and keeps verifying them.

Why an Inspection Shop Should Care More Than Most

If you’re running annual safety inspections, your equipment is part of a regulatory process, and that changes the exposure. Inspection work is high-cycle by nature — a vehicle goes up, somebody checks brakes, ball joints, tie rods, exhaust, and frame, and it comes back down. Fifteen, twenty, thirty cycles a day in a busy shop, mostly quick partial raises. Lock latches, cables, and sheaves take the beating. High cycle count means a lock mechanism that was marginal from the factory gets found out fast.

Then there’s the liability side. If a vehicle comes off a lift during a state inspection, you’re not just dealing with a damaged car and an injured tech. You’re dealing with an insurance adjuster, possibly a state agency, and eventually possibly a lawyer, and the first document any of them asks for is proof the equipment met a recognized standard and was inspected annually. Certified equipment with a clean inspection record turns a nightmare into a manageable claim. Uncertified equipment with no records turns a manageable claim into a nightmare. We’ve watched both play out. Several carriers we deal with in Iowa now ask about certification directly on the shop application, and a few price it into the premium.

How to Check the Equipment You Already Own

Go look at the data plate. On a two-post it’s usually on the inside face of a column near eye level or on the power unit column; on a four-post it’s on a post or the power unit bracket. You’re looking for the gold ALI oval with a certification number, along with the manufacturer, model number, serial number, and rated capacity. Take a photo — you’ll want it for your records and for parts orders anyway.

Absence of a label doesn’t automatically mean the model was never certified. Labels get painted over, scraped off during a repaint, or fall off older equipment. ALI publishes a searchable directory of certified models, so you can look up your make and model number directly. If the model is listed and your label is gone, you can often get a replacement decal through the manufacturer. If the model isn’t listed, it was never certified, and no decal exists to order. That’s where the northeast Iowa shop owner landed. Being uncertified doesn’t make a car lift instantly unsafe — plenty of well-built older equipment predates the program or was simply never submitted — but it does mean nobody independent ever verified it, and you can’t produce documentation you don’t have. For a shop doing regulated inspection work, that’s a real gap.

Certification Is Not a Substitute for Inspection

This is where shops get it backwards. A gold label certifies the model as designed and built. It says nothing about the condition of your specific unit after eight years in a bay with road salt tracked in every winter — which, in northeast Iowa, is most of the year. Certified equipment installed on bad concrete, or with frayed cables, or with lock latches gummed up with grease and grit, is exactly as dangerous as uncertified equipment in the same condition.

The standard that governs the other half is ANSI/ALI ALOIM, which covers operation, inspection, and maintenance. It calls for a documented annual inspection by a qualified technician plus daily operator checks. An annual on a two-post car lift means: anchor bolt torque verified to spec, concrete around each anchor examined for cracking or spalling, cables inspected end to end for broken strands and corrosion, sheaves checked for wear and free rotation, lock latches function-tested at multiple heights, arm restraints verified, hydraulic system checked for leaks and correct fluid level, and every decal confirmed legible. We do these routes across Iowa, and the single most common finding is arm restraints that stopped engaging — usually a worn pin or a bent gear — which is a genuine drop risk on an inspection lift where techs are constantly bumping arms.

Alignment and Inspection Duty: Matching the Right Configuration

A shop doing both alignments and safety inspections has a configuration decision to make. For alignment, you want a four-post alignment-specific model with slip plates in the rear runways and a front turnplate pocket, plus rolling jacks for wheels-free suspension work. Alignment-rated equipment is built to tighter runway-level tolerance than a general-purpose four-post, and that tolerance is the whole point — an out-of-level rack produces alignment numbers you can’t trust.

For general inspection, a two-post is often faster. Techs get clear access to brakes, suspension, exhaust, and the underbody without runways in the way, and a two-post takes up less floor. Most of the tire-and-alignment shops we work with in northeast Iowa run a dedicated alignment rack plus one or two two-post bays for everything else. If floor space or budget forces a single bay, an alignment four-post with rolling jacks does both jobs adequately — you just lose some underbody sightlines. Either way, verify the certification status of the specific model before you commit, because within a single brand’s catalog some models carry the gold label and some don’t. We check that for every quote we write, and we’ll tell you when a model you’re eyeing isn’t certified rather than let you find out during an audit.

Installation Is Part of the Safety Chain

Certified equipment installed wrong is uncertified in every practical sense. The three things that go wrong most often are slab, anchors, and level. Slab: manufacturers specify minimum thickness, minimum compressive strength, and minimum distance from expansion joints and slab edges. Older shop floors in small-town Iowa are frequently thinner than the spec sheet requires, and a lot of them have been patched. We test before we drill — a core or at minimum a thickness probe — because finding out afterward is expensive.

Anchors: use the anchor the manufacturer specifies, at the specified embedment, torqued to the specified value, and re-check that torque after the first weeks of service. Wedge anchors relax as concrete settles around them. Level: columns must be plumb within the manufacturer’s tolerance, shimmed with steel shims only, never wood or composite. An out-of-plumb column loads the carriage rollers unevenly and wears them out years early. We install with a laser and we document the readings. Get all three right and a properly maintained car lift will outlast the building it’s in. Get one wrong and you’ll be calling somebody about a drifting carriage inside two years — we get those calls weekly from shops whose equipment was self-installed. Where to Start if You’re Reworking a Bay

Start with a walkthrough of what you already have. Photograph every data plate, look up every model in the ALI directory, and pull whatever inspection records exist. That gives you an honest inventory: what’s certified, what’s documented, what needs an annual, and what’s genuinely at end of life. Some of the equipment in older northeast Iowa shops is worth keeping and servicing. Some of it should have been scrapped a decade ago, and a fifteen-minute inspection makes that obvious.

Then prioritize. If you’re bidding regulated inspection work or your carrier is asking questions, certified replacement equipment in your highest-traffic bay is the first dollar to spend. If everything you own is certified but nothing’s been inspected in five years, an inspection route is cheaper and more urgent than new equipment.
