What a Car Lift Atlas Install Actually Draws

Most Atlas two-post and four-post lifts in the capacity range shops use for RVs and trailers — think extended-height 10,000 lb models — run on a single motor rated between 1.5 and 3 horsepower, depending on configuration. That motor is almost always available in either 208-230V single-phase or three-phase, and this is where we see the most confusion. A lot of older rural shops along the Iowa-Illinois corridor were wired decades ago for smaller compressors and welders, not for a hydraulic lift motor pulling a hard startup surge every time someone cycles the arms.

Before we ship or install any car lift Atlas unit, we ask for a photo of the panel and the amperage rating on the main disconnect. A single-phase 230V circuit typically needs a dedicated 20-30 amp breaker depending on the motor size, and it needs to be a home run — not shared with the shop’s air compressor or welder outlet. We’ve had customers try to piggyback a lift onto an existing 220V circuit that was already loaded, and the result is a motor that hums, trips breakers, or burns out its start capacitor within the first year. Get an electrician’s opinion in writing before the lift arrives, not after.

Single-Phase vs Three-Phase: Which One Fits Your Shop

Three-phase power is more efficient and easier on the motor, but most independent RV and trailer shops we work with in Iowa and Illinois simply don’t have three-phase service run to their building. That’s fine — Atlas builds nearly every popular lift model in a single-phase configuration specifically because so many small shops are single-phase only. The tradeoff is a slightly higher amp draw on startup, which is exactly why the dedicated circuit matters so much.

If your shop does have three-phase available, we generally recommend it for any car lift Atlas unit rated above 12,000 lbs, or for shops running two or more lifts off the same panel. Three-phase motors run cooler, last longer under heavy daily cycling, and are less prone to the voltage sag that happens when a single-phase motor kicks on at the same moment another piece of shop equipment is running. For a shop doing steady volume in shocks, struts, and CV work, that reliability difference adds up over a few years of daily use.

Sizing the Breaker and Wire Run Correctly

Undersized wire is the silent killer of hydraulic lift motors. A run that’s too long or uses wire gauge too thin for the distance causes voltage drop, and a motor starved for voltage draws more amps trying to compensate, which generates heat and shortens motor life. We’ve seen this exact scenario play out at shops that installed a car lift Atlas unit near the back of a long building, ran 12-gauge wire fifty feet from the panel, and wondered a year later why the motor sounded strained on every lift cycle.

As a rule, plan on 10-gauge or heavier wire for any run over 50 feet on a 230V single-phase circuit, and always oversize slightly if you’re unsure — the cost difference in copper is small compared to a motor replacement. Your electrician should also install a disconnect switch within sight of the lift itself, which is both a code requirement in most Iowa and Illinois jurisdictions and genuinely useful when a technician needs to service the lift with the power positively locked out.

The First-Year Story: Install to First Real Service Job

We think about electrical planning through the lens of a shop’s first year of ownership, because that’s when small wiring mistakes turn into real problems. Technicians tend to leave the vehicle up longer, cycle the arms more during the job to access different angles, and often run the lift at full extended height to get underneath larger trailer axles and RV frames. That means the motor on your car lift Atlas unit is working harder, more often, across a longer service window than it would in a quick-lube setting.

This is exactly why the electrical foundation matters more for shops doing suspension and axle work than for a shop doing simple tire swaps. A marginal circuit that survives light use will get exposed fast under a full day of shock jobs. We tell every RV and trailer shop we quote: budget for the electrical work as part of the lift purchase, not as an afterthought, because it’s cheaper to do once, correctly, than to redo it after a burned-out motor six months in.

Working with Your Electrician Before Delivery

That’s a conversation worth having before the deposit, not after.
