Step One: What’s Your Budget Range?
Every decision tree starts with money, so let’s be honest about it. Step Two: Two-Post or Four-Post for Diff Work?
Differential fluid service specifically favors a two-post configuration because it leaves the underside of the vehicle completely open — no runways blocking your access to the diff cover, drain plug, or fill plug. Step Three: Concrete Slab Thickness for a Two-Post Lift

We’ve turned away installs on slabs that looked fine on the surface but had no reinforcement and were only three inches thick — that’s a liability nobody should take on. Before you finalize your lift choice, get a core sample or at minimum a solid understanding of your slab’s age, thickness, and reinforcement. Step Four: Capacity — Match It to What You Actually Restore
Restoration shops tend to work on a wider spread of vehicle weights than a typical repair shop, and that changes your capacity math. If you’re mostly doing lighter classic cars, a 9,000 or 10,000 lb lift covers you comfortably. But if your northeast Iowa shop also takes in full-size trucks, vintage Broncos, or heavier project vehicles, size up to a 12,000 lb or extended-height configuration so you’re not maxing out the equipment on your biggest jobs.

Pad height and screw-jack extensions matter too. Diff service means you’re often positioning pads on the frame rails rather than pinch welds, so you want arms and pads with enough adjustment range to clear the axle housing without contacting it. Step Six: Installation Timing Around Your Shop Schedule
