The other half is your bay layout, and we’ve seen plenty of farm shop owners buy the right lift and put it in the wrong spot, which turns a simple oil change into a workflow headache every single time. This checklist walks through what we ask every rural shop owner before we ever quote a lift, so you can plan your bay correctly the first time.

Step 1: Measure Your Actual Ceiling and Door Height

Before you even think about which car lift Atlas model fits your budget, get a tape measure on your actual ceiling height and your door opening. Being honest about how the lift will actually be used, rather than what might theoretically happen someday, keeps the quote realistic and keeps you from overpaying for capability you’ll never use.

Step 3: Plan the Workflow Around the Lift, Not the Other Way Around

A common mistake we see in farm shops is placing the lift wherever there happens to be open floor space, without thinking through how vehicles will move in and out around it. For a shop that’s doing oil changes and fluid service regularly, you want a straight, unobstructed path from the door to the lift bay, with enough clearance on both sides to open doors fully and roll a drain pan or fluid cart underneath without squeezing past support columns or a workbench.

Think about where your parts washer, oil storage, and fluid recycling setup will sit relative to the lift too. If you’re hauling used oil across the shop every time, that’s wasted motion multiplied by every service you do in a year. Positioning the lift close to your fluid service station cuts real time off every job, and that adds up fast in a working farm shop where efficiency matters as much as capability.

Step 4: Decide Between Mechanical and Hydraulic Before You Compare Prices

One thing we tell every rural customer: figure out mechanical versus hydraulic before you start comparing dollar figures, because comparing a mechanical four-post to a hydraulic two-post on price alone isn’t a fair comparison. Mechanical lifts, including several car lift Atlas options, tend to be more economical and don’t require a compressor, which matters if you told us in step one that you’re not running air lines. They also tend to have simpler adjustment systems, often locking in increments of a couple inches so you can set the platform at whichever height suits the job rather than being stuck fully up or fully down.

Hydraulic lifts generally offer smoother operation and often faster cycle times, but they add the compressor requirement and typically cost more once you include installation. For a shop focused mainly on oil changes and fluid service rather than heavy diagnostic work, the mechanical route is frequently the more economical answer, and it’s worth pricing both configurations before locking in a decision.

Step 5: Ask About Install Versus Lift-Only Pricing

Farm shop owners are often comfortable doing their own mechanical work, and some ask about buying a lift without professional installation to save money. That’s a reasonable question, but be honest with yourself about the tools and time required, particularly for anchoring and leveling a two-post unit correctly. A poorly anchored lift is a safety problem no matter how good the equipment itself is, so if you’re leaning toward a DIY install, at minimum have someone experienced check the anchoring and leveling before it goes into regular use.

Step 6: Think About Future Bay Use, Not Just This Purchase

Even if your immediate need is oil changes and fluid service, think ahead a few years to whether your shop’s workload might expand.
