An RV and trailer shop on the Iowa-Missouri border called us in the spring with a specific frustration: they had been shopping online for weeks looking at car lift atlas listings and could not tell one model number from the next. Was a 9BP different from a 10OH? What does the H mean? What are the actual capacity and column-height differences? They were losing days to research. What the Digits Actually Mean

Most two-post lift model numbers, whether on a car lift atlas or a competing brand, encode three things: capacity, configuration, and column height. The lead digits are capacity in thousands of pounds. So a 9 means 9,000 lb, a 10 means 10,000 lb, and a 12 means 12,000 lb. The letters after describe configuration. OH or O means overhead beam. BP or B means baseplate. X or XLT indicates extended column height, usually adding 12 to 18 inches to the standard.

Where it gets confusing is when manufacturers add suffixes for arm style, symmetry, or clearance. An SX might mean symmetric arms with extended reach. An A might mean asymmetric column rotation for wider door opening. Every brand shuffles the letters. Once you know the pattern, though, you can decode a 60-item catalog in ten minutes. For the Iowa-Missouri border shop, we tabbed through their online cart and translated each listing into plain language: capacity, config, column height, arm style. Their shortlist went from twelve candidates to three, and then to one, in about an hour. That is the value of pattern recognition.

The Storage Use Case and Capacity Choice

The shop stored customer campers and pickup trucks. Their heaviest anticipated vehicle was a fully loaded three-quarter-ton pickup at about 8,400 lbs, and their tallest was a Class C motorhome at 12 feet 4 inches. Capacity 9,000 lb was tight; capacity 10,000 lb gave them clean margin. On column height, standard would clear the pickup easily but the Class C motorhome would nearly touch the overhead beam.

That drove us to a 10-capacity extended-column overhead-beam configuration on the car lift atlas platform. In model-number shorthand, something in the 10OH-XLT family. That combination cleared the tallest vehicle with a foot of margin and left plenty of capacity headroom for anything they might store in the future. Capacity is one place we always recommend rounding up. A lift running at 90 percent of rated capacity works harder than a lift running at 60 percent, and cable and cylinder life reflect that. Paying an extra $600 for capacity you rarely use is cheap when it stretches component life by five years. The shop agreed and ordered the extended-column 10.

Comparing Two Car Lift Atlas Models Side by Side

To make the choice concrete, we put two car lift atlas variants side by side on paper for the customer. Model A: 9,000 lb capacity, standard columns, overhead configuration. Model B: 10,000 lb capacity, extended columns, overhead configuration. Purchase price gap: roughly $800. Weight difference: about 180 lbs. Anchor pattern: identical. Cable specification: heavier gauge on Model B. Warranty: same. Delivery time: same.

Model B’s advantages showed up in three places. First, cable lifespan increased because the heavier-gauge cables spend less of their duty cycle near rated tension. Second, cylinder life increased for the same reason: they see lower peak pressures during typical lifts. Third, column height gave them the future-proofing to service any RV a customer might bring in over the next twenty years. Model A would have been fine for today’s fleet, but the shop is on the Iowa-Missouri border where tourism-driven RV traffic keeps growing, and Class A motorhomes are becoming more common on their service list. The extra $800 up front bought them a lift that will still be right in year fifteen. That is how we frame every capacity-and-height comparison for storage-heavy shops.

Install Day and First Cycle Test

Install day for the extended-column car lift atlas ran seven hours, an hour longer than a standard-column install because the taller components require slower positioning and extra care with the overhead beam. Our team of two technicians plus the shop’s own tech handled it. Anchor drilling used the same eight-per-column pattern as any two-post overhead install. The extra column height added about 200 lbs of dead weight per column, which mattered during positioning but not during operation.

Cable tensioning on extended-column units also gets a longer initial break-in cycle. We ran the lift ten times unloaded, re-checked tension, and adjusted. Then we ran it three times loaded with their service pickup, re-checked tension again, and adjusted a final time. That is more attention than a standard install requires, but it prevents the first-month cable stretch that some owners misinterpret as a defect. Cables always stretch slightly in the first 30 days of operation. Building the stretch into the install-day process means the customer never sees a mid-month tension change. First cycle test with the pickup went smoothly, and the shop tech was ready to run vehicles the next morning.

What the Storage Cycle Looked Like

By month three, the shop had cycled the car lift atlas roughly 90 times, most of those to lift-and-hold for storage rather than lift-and-service. Storage duty stresses different components than service duty. Cables spend long periods under sustained tension. Cylinders spend long periods holding pressure without cycling. Both are fine for a properly specified lift, but they demand a specific maintenance rhythm.

We taught the shop tech to visually inspect the cables every two weeks during storage season, engage the mechanical safety locks every single time a vehicle sat overnight, and never rely on hydraulic pressure for overnight holds. That habit is the difference between five-year cable life and fifteen-year cable life. He built the checks into his morning routine and reported no anomalies through the entire first storage cycle. At the 90-day inspection we found cable tension within spec, anchor torque holding, and hydraulic fluid clear with no metallic sheen. The Iowa-Missouri border shop was on track for a long, boring, uneventful lift life, which is exactly what we want for storage-focused customers.

The Year-One Report Card

Twelve months in, this shop’s car lift atlas had cycled around 260 times, held vehicles overnight or longer on 88 occasions, and had zero unplanned downtime. One warranty part, a hydraulic hose fitting that developed a slow weep around month seven, was replaced during a scheduled visit at no cost to the customer. Total service spend for year one, excluding install, was under $400 across quarterly inspections, one filter change, and the aforementioned fitting.

The shop owner tells us the model number research was the hardest part of the whole project. Once we translated the digits into plain-language specs, the decision was quick and the lift matched his shop perfectly. That is the point. Model numbers are a shortcut for people who already know the code, and a barrier for people who do not. Our job is to translate.
