Myth 1: “ALI Gold” Is a Quality Grade Like a Star Rating
It isn’t. The gold label is a certification mark issued through the Automotive Lift Institute’s third-party program, administered by an independent lab. It means a specific lift model was submitted, tested against ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards, and passed — structural testing, load testing, overload behavior, safety device function, and manual and labeling requirements. It also means the manufacturer is under ongoing surveillance, with periodic factory audits and retesting. It is a pass/fail credential tied to a model and capacity, not a ranking of one brand above another.
The practical consequence is that two lifts sitting side by side can look identical and only one carries the label. Certification costs manufacturers money and takes time, so plenty of imported models simply skip it and lean on phrases like “designed to meet ALI standards” or “ALI-compliant components.” Those phrases mean nothing verifiable. If a model is certified, it appears in ALI’s online directory by manufacturer and model number, and the physical lift carries a gold label with a serial reference. We tell every shop the same thing: look up the exact model number, not the brand. Some manufacturers certify their 10,000 lb two-post and not their 12,000 lb version, or certify the clearfloor and not the overhead. Myth 2: Certification Doesn’t Matter for a Small Independent Shop
This one gets expensive. Certification matters in three places that have nothing to do with engineering pride. First, insurance. More Iowa carriers are asking whether shop lifts are ALI certified and whether they’re inspected annually, and a few have started making it a condition of coverage on garage liability. Second, OSHA. Third, resale. A certified lift with documented inspections holds value; an uncertified one is nearly unsellable to anyone doing due diligence.

Myth 3: EV Work Doesn’t Change the Lift Requirements
It changes several. Many EVs have specific, documented lift points on reinforced pinch-weld sections or dedicated pucks, and putting an adapter anywhere else can crush a rocker or, worse, contact pack housing. That means pad height adapters and manufacturer-specific blocks aren’t optional accessories — they’re part of the lift package.
The other change is ground clearance. Plenty of EVs sit low with flat underbody aero panels, which makes it hard to get a standard arm and pad under the vehicle at all. Low-profile pads and 3-stage arms with a genuinely low collapsed height solve that; a bargain lift with tall arms doesn’t. For exhaust and driveline access — which is still a big share of work in a mixed shop that services hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and conventional vehicles alongside pure EVs — you want a two-post with wide column spacing and enough drive-through width to roll a transmission jack or a pack table between the posts. Myth 4: Higher Capacity Always Means Safer
We hear this weekly and it’s half true at best. What actually makes a lift safe is that its rated capacity exceeds the vehicle weight with margin, its per-arm loading is respected, its anchors are set in adequate concrete, its safety latches engage on both columns, and its arm restraints hold.
Over-buying also introduces a real problem: adapter stack height. A heavier-duty lift often has taller arms and thicker pads, which is exactly wrong for a low EV. We’ve had to swap arms on lifts that were technically overkill and practically unusable for the customer’s fleet. The right approach is to list your five heaviest vehicles and your five lowest vehicles, then pick the model that handles both ends. Capacity solves one end. Collapsed height and pad options solve the other. On the four-post side, the analogous mistake is buying runway length for a bus when your longest vehicle is a crew cab — you lose floor space you needed and gain nothing. Myth 5: A Certified Lift Doesn’t Need Annual Inspection
Certification is a statement about the design and manufacture of the model. It says nothing about the condition of your specific unit after four Iowa winters. ALI’s own program includes a separate lift inspector certification precisely because the equipment needs periodic third-party eyes. The ANSI/ALI ALOIM standard covers operation, inspection, and maintenance, and it calls for annual inspection by a qualified inspector — that’s the standard your insurer is likely referencing if they ask.
What we find on annuals in northwest Iowa is predictable. Latch release cables stretched out of adjustment so one column clicks and the other doesn’t. Equalization cables with broken strands where they pass over a sheave. Anchor bolts that lost torque after a few freeze-thaw cycles. Hydraulic fluid low from a weeping cylinder seal or a loose fitting on a floorplate hose. Arm restraint gears worn round from years of boot kicks. None of those are exotic failures and all of them are cheap to fix in year three and expensive to fix in year nine. A shop near the lakes had us in for a routine annual and we found a cable two strands from failure on a lift the owner described as “basically new.” It was eleven years old. A legitimate distributor produces it immediately. Evasion — “all our lifts meet the same standards,” “the label comes with the paperwork” — is your answer.
Then ask the questions the label doesn’t cover. Who installs it, and are they doing anchor torque to spec with a calibrated wrench? Who stocks parts for it in five years? What’s the lead time on a power unit or a cable set?
