Start With Your Vehicle Mix, Not the Sales Brochure

The first question is not what you want to buy. It is what actually rolls through your door. We asked the West Des Moines foreman to pull his last hundred repair orders and count. Roughly sixty percent were sedans and crossovers, thirty percent half-ton pickups and full-size SUVs, and about ten percent were three-quarter-ton trucks and the occasional cargo van. That distribution points straight at a 10,000 lb two-post as the workhorse and rules out the 7,000 lb unit somebody quoted him.

Capacity is not the only variable your vehicle mix drives. Wheelbase range determines arm configuration. If you are seeing everything from a Civic to a crew-cab long-bed, you need three-stage front arms with real retraction and enough rear arm reach to hit the pickup points on a 160-inch wheelbase. Vehicle height determines whether you need a clearfloor overhead model or a baseplate. Curb weight distribution matters too — EVs and hybrids carry battery packs low and centered, which changes pad placement and pushes some shops toward higher capacity than the gross weight alone suggests. We have seen shops buy a car lift automotive package sized for their average vehicle instead of their heaviest, and then spend the next decade turning away work or, worse, lifting something they should not. Buy for the top ten percent of your fleet, not the middle.

Differential Fluid Service and Why Access Beats Capacity

Differential fluid service is one of those jobs that seems trivial until you try to do it badly. You need clear access to the fill and drain plugs, you need the vehicle level so the fluid sits at the right height, and you need enough room to get a fluid pump and a catch pan under there without contorting yourself. On a floor jack and stands, the vehicle is nose-high or tail-high, the fill level is wrong, and you are lying on concrete.

A two-post solves the level problem completely if it is installed correctly and the arms are set at matched heights. The vehicle hangs by its frame or pinch welds with the suspension unloaded and the body dead level. Rear differential access is wide open. Front differential on a four-wheel-drive truck is a little tighter because of the front axle and steering components, but it is still dramatically better than jack stands. A mid-rise scissor lift is a poor choice for this work because the platform sits under the center of the vehicle and blocks driveline access. A four-post with a rolling jack works but adds a step. For a body shop that does occasional mechanical work alongside collision repair, the two-post is the right answer nine times out of ten. This is a case where the correct car lift automotive choice is driven by job geometry, not tonnage, and we would rather sell somebody a properly configured 10,000 lb unit than an oversized machine that does not fit the work.

Two-Post, Four-Post, or Mid-Rise: Honest Tradeoffs

Two-post lifts give you the best underside access, take the smallest footprint, and cost the least per bay. The tradeoffs are real: you have to set the arms correctly every single time, you need adequate concrete, and you cannot store a vehicle on one safely for weeks. For general mechanical work, exhaust, brakes, suspension, and differential service, nothing beats it.

Four-post lifts are drive-on, forgiving, and safe for long-term parking. They are the right call for alignment work, quick lube operations, and any shop that wants storage capability. The downside is the runways block the area under the frame rails, so you need a rolling jack to lift the wheels free, and that adds cost and a step to every job. Mid-rise and low-rise scissor lifts are excellent for wheel and tire work, body panel access, and detailing, and they store flat when not in use. They are wrong for anything requiring driveline access. For a collision shop specifically, we often recommend a mid-rise scissor for panel and bumper work in one bay plus a 10,000 lb two-post in another for the mechanical side. What a Car Lift Automotive Package Actually Costs to Own

Purchase price is the number everybody focuses on and the least useful one. We break cost of ownership into four buckets: equipment, installation, maintenance, and downtime. Equipment for a commercial-grade 10,000 lb two-post lands in the mid four figures to low five figures depending on brand, arm configuration, and options. Installation adds a meaningful amount if you need concrete work, electrical runs, or overhead modifications. Budget for both together, not the sticker alone.

Maintenance is small and predictable if you actually do it. Grease, hydraulic fluid, cable tension checks, and an annual inspection add up to a modest yearly figure. Skipping it converts that small number into a large one when a cylinder fails or a cable snaps. Downtime is the bucket nobody budgets and everybody pays. The same-age off-brand unit with no paperwork and unknown maintenance history is worth roughly the cost of hauling it away, and sometimes less than that once you factor in removal labor.

Three things drive resale. First, brand and parts availability — a buyer is purchasing future serviceability, and if the parts pipeline is dead the equipment is scrap. Second, documented maintenance. An inspection history proves the lift was cared for and gives the buyer confidence that the cylinders and cables are within life. Third, physical condition of the structural components: column straightness, weld integrity, arm pin wear, and carriage condition. Cosmetics matter less than people think; rust on the base plate is normal in Iowa and does not affect value much. What kills value is a bent arm, a cracked weld, or evidence of an anchor pull-out. Concrete, Ceiling, and Power: The Three Site Gates

Before anyone quotes you equipment, three site conditions have to be verified. Concrete comes first. Most two-post lifts require a minimum slab thickness and compressive strength, and a lot of older West Des Moines commercial buildings do not meet it without a cut-and-pour footing. We core-test when we are unsure. A footing pour is not expensive relative to the equipment and it is absolutely not the place to gamble. Anchors that pull out of thin slab are the failure mode that generates lawsuits.

Ceiling height is second. Clearfloor overhead two-posts generally need around twelve feet of clear height to raise a tall vehicle without contacting the crossbar. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the deck — door tracks, HVAC ducts, sprinkler heads, and light fixtures all count. If you are short, a baseplate model runs the hydraulic line and equalizer cables through the floor plate instead of overhead and buys you the clearance. Power is third and usually the easiest. Most commercial power units run single-phase 208-230V and need a dedicated circuit, and some heavy-duty units want three-phase. Have your electrician confirm available service before you order. How We Recommend Buying, Step by Step

Here is the process we walk shops through. Step one, pull your repair order history and identify your heaviest and longest vehicles. Step two, measure your bay: clear ceiling to the lowest obstruction, bay width column to column or wall to wall, and slab thickness if known. Step three, decide what work the bay needs to do — general mechanical, alignment, storage, or body work — because that drives configuration more than anything else. Step four, get a real site visit before you commit money.

Step five, buy from a source that will still answer the phone in year eight. We are biased here, obviously, but the reason we stock parts in Iowa is that we got tired of watching shops go down for two weeks waiting on a backordered cable. Step six, install it right and inspect it annually. That last step protects your people, your insurance position, and your resale value all at once.
