Most of the pre-purchase calls we take about a car lift automotive setup come from farm shops in central Iowa, and they almost always open the same way: “I’ve got a machine shed, I do my own tires and brakes, and I don’t know if I need overhead or baseplate.” That question is worth taking seriously because getting it wrong means either a beam you duck under for twenty years or a floor bar you trip over every single day. We install and service lifts across Iowa from our base in Ames, and we have walked enough sheds to know that the answer depends less on the lift than on your building. Here is the checklist we run through before anyone spends money.

Step One: Measure the Ceiling Before You Shop Anything
Before brand, capacity, or price, measure your lowest obstruction. Not the peak of the truss — the lowest thing in the swing path of the columns. In a typical pole shed that is a purlin, a light fixture, a heater flue, or a wire run that somebody strung in 1998. Write down the height to that obstruction and the height to the underside of the truss separately, because those two numbers drive different decisions.
An overhead two-post needs the beam plus clearance above it, which realistically means twelve feet or better if you want to lift a full-size pickup to a comfortable working height. Baseplate designs move the equalization cables and hydraulic line down into a floor channel, so your only overhead constraint is the vehicle itself plus the columns. We have installed baseplate units in central Iowa sheds with barely ten feet of clear height where an overhead model would have been useless. On the other hand, if you have a proper shop with fourteen-foot walls, overhead is usually the better car lift automotive choice because the floor stays completely clear. Also measure column-to-wall distance and bay width. A two-post needs roughly twelve feet between columns and enough side room to swing arms and open doors, and a lot of shed bays that feel roomy on foot turn out tight once a crew cab is centered on it.
Step Two: Be Honest About Tire and Wheel Work
This is where the overhead versus baseplate question stops being theoretical. If you rotate tires, chase wheel bearings, or wrestle loaded ag tires around, you are rolling jacks, tire carts, and dollies across the bay floor constantly. A baseplate crossbar sits a few inches proud of the concrete, and every cart you push has to go over it or around it. Some people never notice. Others curse it daily for a decade. We ask farm shop owners to picture their actual workflow: which side do you approach from, where does the impact cart live, do you roll tires out the overhead door or across the bay?
If tire rotation is your bread and butter and the ceiling allows it, overhead wins. The floor is clean, carts roll freely, and the beam also gives you a natural place to hang a hose reel or a light. If the ceiling forces baseplate, mitigate it — we set the crossbar cover so it is fully seated and ramped, and we position the lift so the crossbar runs across the least-trafficked side of the bay. A well-installed baseplate car lift automotive setup is entirely livable; a sloppily installed one with a loose cover plate is a trip hazard and a maintenance headache. Also consider a mid-rise scissor as a second unit if wheel work dominates your day. Plenty of central Iowa shops run one two-post for general work and a low-profile scissor purely for tires and brakes, and the pair costs less than one heavy commercial lift.
Step Three: Capacity, and Why 10,000 Pounds Is Rarely Enough
Farm shops lift things that were never in the brochure photos. A three-quarter-ton diesel pickup with a flatbed, a tool box, and a full fuel transfer tank is not a 6,000 lb vehicle. Add a service body or a plow mount and you are well past what a light-duty unit should carry. We regularly get calls that start with a 7,000 lb requirement and end with us recommending 12,000 lb because of what actually rolls into the shop.
Our general guidance for a rural shop: 10,000 lb is the practical minimum, 12,000 lb is the sweet spot, and 15,000 lb makes sense if you service one-ton duallies or light medium-duty trucks. Remember that capacity ratings assume even distribution across all four arms, and a dump insert or a rear-mounted crane shifts a lot of weight to one axle. Also check arm reach and adjustable-height pads, because tall-frame trucks need pad stack height that a car-oriented lift may not include. When you spec a car lift automotive package for mixed farm and pickup work, ask specifically about asymmetric versus symmetric arm geometry too. Asymmetric columns rotate and use shorter front arms so the vehicle sits back, letting doors clear the columns — genuinely useful for cars and mid-size trucks. Symmetric handles long-wheelbase trucks more comfortably. If your fleet is mostly pickups, symmetric or a clear-floor overhead with versatile arms is usually the safer bet.
Step Four: The Concrete Nobody Wants to Talk About
Machine shed floors are the single biggest source of bad surprises in our business. Many were poured in stages, over different bases, with different thicknesses, sometimes with no rebar and sometimes with control joints in exactly the wrong place. A two-post lift transmits enormous concentrated force into a handful of anchors, and if the concrete under those anchors is four inches of unreinforced pour over loose fill, no anchor on earth will save you.
Manufacturers typically specify a minimum of four to six inches of concrete at 3,000 psi or better, cured, with anchors placed a required distance from any joint or slab edge. We core-test when there is any doubt. If a slab fails, the fix is straightforward but not free: saw-cut and repour pads under each column, sized and reinforced to spec, then wait for cure before anchoring. We have done plenty of these in central Iowa sheds and it always beats the alternative. This is also where baseplate models add one more consideration — the floor channel means a continuous run between columns, so slab quality matters across that whole span, not just at two footprints. Whatever configuration you choose, insist that your installer verify concrete rather than assume it. A car lift automotive installation is only as strong as what is under it, and anchor pullout failures are the ones that hurt people.
Step Five: Power, Air, and Where the Cords Will Actually Run
Power units come in single-phase 208-230V and three-phase configurations, and most rural shops are single-phase. Confirm your available service and breaker capacity before ordering, and confirm the receptacle type. We have shown up to installs where the only outlet within forty feet was a 15-amp household circuit, which meant an electrician and another week of waiting. Plan a dedicated circuit near the column that houses the power unit, positioned so the cord does not cross a walkway or the bay entrance.
Air matters too. The mechanical lock releases on most two-post designs are air-actuated, so you need shop air routed to the lift. On some models the air line runs through the overhead beam; on baseplate units it runs in the floor channel with the hydraulic line. Sketch out where the compressor sits and how the line gets there before install day. And decide which column the power unit goes on based on how you walk into the bay — you want the controls on the side you naturally approach from, with clear sightlines down both arms while you raise a vehicle. Step Six: Brand, Parts Availability, and the Twenty-Year Question
The cheapest lift on the internet is cheap for reasons that show up in year six. Our commercial recommendations are Rotary and Challenger, and for home and light-duty shops we sell BendPak and Atlas. The reason is not brand loyalty; it is parts. When a farm shop calls us about a fifteen-year-old lift needing an equalization cable, an arm restraint gear, or a cylinder seal kit, we can get those parts for the brands we stock. For an orphaned import bought from a marketplace listing, sometimes we simply cannot, and the owner has a scrap-metal decision on their hands.
Ask three questions of any seller: Is the model ALI certified? Are wear parts — cables, seals, slide blocks, restraint gears, latch assemblies — available as individual items? And who services it locally? That last one matters most in rural Iowa. A great lift with nobody within two hundred miles who will inspect and repair it is not a great lift. Budget in tiers rather than exact numbers: entry-level 10,000 lb units run in the low thousands, well-built 12,000 lb commercial equipment sits meaningfully higher, and installation plus any concrete work adds another significant chunk. Buying the right car lift automotive equipment once, from a brand with a parts pipeline, is cheaper over twenty years than buying twice.
Step Seven: The Final Walkthrough Before You Sign
Here is the short version to print and carry into the shed. Measure lowest overhead obstruction and truss height. Measure bay width and column-to-wall clearances. List the three heaviest vehicles you actually service and add a margin. Decide overhead or baseplate based on ceiling first and floor traffic second. Verify slab thickness, strength, and joint locations, or plan to core-test. Confirm electrical service, breaker size, and receptacle location. Confirm shop air routing. Check ALI certification and wear-part availability. Ask who services it locally.
Then do one more thing: park your worst-case vehicle where the lift will go, chalk the column footprints on the floor, and walk around it with a tire cart. Open the doors. Reach for where the controls will be. Look up at where the beam would sit. Five minutes of that exercise catches more problems than an hour of spec-sheet reading, and it has changed plenty of minds in our experience — usually from overhead to baseplate or from 10,000 lb up to 12,000 lb.
