A car lift automotive install into a rural farm shop is not the same as an install into a suburban commercial building, and the pre-purchase checklist should reflect that reality. A farm shop owner in east-central Iowa called us this spring wanting a lift to do wheel bearing work on his own equipment plus a handful of neighbors’ pickups. He had a great pole barn shop, good power, and a lot of unknowns about whether it was actually ready for a proper lift. We built him a written pre-purchase checklist, walked through it item by item at his shop, and only after every box was ticked did we quote and order his hardware. Here is the exact seven-item checklist we use for rural shops, with what we found at his install.

Checklist item 1: Slab age and thickness verification

Any car lift automotive above 6,000 lb capacity needs a properly-cured, properly-thick slab. The first item on our rural checklist is: measure your slab. Farm shop slabs range wildly. Some are 4 inches of good reinforced concrete poured to spec 20 years ago. Some are 3 inches of driveway-quality mix poured over compacted gravel with no rebar. You cannot tell which by looking. We core-drill a small test hole in the corner of the bay, measure the actual thickness, and look for rebar. If we see rebar and 4-plus inches, we are usually fine for a 9,000 or 10,000 lb 2-post.

His slab tested at 4.5 inches with wire mesh reinforcement, poured 15 years ago according to the barn builder’s records. Cylinder crush tests were not done at pour, so we could not verify PSI from paperwork. Instead we did a Schmidt hammer test at three points on the slab surface, which reads back approximate compressive strength non-destructively. All three points read above 3,200 PSI. He was clear for install without a new pour. This step alone saves buyers from installing a car lift automotive onto a slab that will crack under load in year one.

Checklist item 2: Electrical service

2-post lifts run on either 220V single-phase or 208/230V three-phase. Farm shops usually have 220V single-phase available because they run welders and larger equipment off it already. Some rural shops have three-phase from the co-op utility if the shop was built for grain handling or large machinery. His shop was 220V single-phase on a 50-amp subpanel — plenty of headroom for a 30-amp lift feed.

What to verify: available amperage on the panel, distance from panel to preferred lift location (affects wire gauge), whether the panel has room for a dedicated breaker, and grounding. His panel had two open slots and a good ground rod. His electrician (his brother-in-law, actually — rural shops always have a brother-in-law) ran a dedicated 30-amp circuit in EMT to a hardwired disconnect within 4 feet of the future lift location. That gave us a clean feed to the power unit. A car lift automotive shops on marginal or shared electrical will trip breakers under load and shorten the life of the hydraulic pump. Dedicated feed is not optional. It is checklist-item-two for a reason.

Checklist item 3: Overhead clearance and obstacles

Pole barn ceilings are usually tall — 14 to 16 feet at the peak — but trusses and purlins can drop that at the eaves. We measure the low point of the ceiling across the entire footprint of the intended lift installation. Not the peak. Not the average. The lowest point where the lift columns will land or where an arm will swing.

His pole barn had 14-foot ceilings at the peak dropping to about 11 ft 8 in under the truss chord that ran across the middle of the bay. We placed the lift so the columns landed under the peak (13 ft 4 in clearance) and the arms swung under the truss chord (11 ft 8 in clearance). At full rise a lifted crew cab pickup topped out at 152 inches — well under the 160-inch truss chord clearance. Also check: hanging lights, overhead heater flues, insulation stapling, HVAC ducts. Rural shops often have shop lights hanging from long chains that need to be raised or relocated before a car lift automotive install. His shop had two hanging LEDs directly over the planned columns. We raised them 18 inches on shorter chains before install day.

Checklist item 4: Vehicle mix and capacity headroom

List the vehicles you will actually lift. Farm shops have a wide range: personal pickup (5,800 lb), farm dually (7,200 lb), UTV on a cart, service tractor 3-point front (skip the lift), maybe an older sedan the wife drives. Take the heaviest realistic vehicle and add 25 percent margin. His heaviest was a 7,200 lb one-ton dually plus 25 percent margin equals 9,000 lb minimum lift rating. We recommended a 10,000 lb 2-post to give him a bit more room to grow. The extra capacity cost roughly $200 over the 9,000 lb version and covers him if he ever adds a bigger truck.

Do not over-buy either. A 15,000 lb lift is heavier, takes up more floor space in the columns, and costs meaningfully more than a 10,000 lb unit. If you will never lift a 12,000 lb vehicle, do not buy a 15,000 lb lift. The car lift automotive shops we install into farm shops are almost always in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb range — right-sized for the work, not oversized for imagined future use. Right-sizing saves money and floor space without giving anything up in real-world use.

Checklist item 5: Access route from driveway to bay

Rural driveways are often gravel and long. Freight trucks need a firm base and enough turnaround room. His driveway was gravel, 400 feet long from the road, with a 90-degree turn at the farmyard. We measured the turn and calculated that a 53-foot dry van could not make it. Options: shorter box truck (freight class change adds cost but works), or freight-terminal drop with our truck picking up the last mile. We picked terminal drop — freight went to the Cedar Rapids LTL terminal and we ran up to grab it on our own flatbed. Total added cost: negligible.

Also verify: gate widths, ability to back a trailer to the bay door, and whether the bay entry itself is tall and wide enough for freight and eventually vehicles. His bay door was 12 ft wide by 14 ft tall — plenty. This is the checklist item most likely to be missed by first-time buyers who assume the freight company will figure it out. They will not. A car lift automotive install to a rural shop needs the access route sorted before the order goes in, not the day the truck shows up.

Checklist item 6: Anchor placement and column layout

Once slab, ceiling, and vehicle mix are known, we draw the actual column layout on the slab with chalk. For a symmetric 2-post the columns land 12 feet apart in his configuration, centered on the bay width. For an asymmetric 2-post the columns still land 12 feet apart but shifted 15 inches off-center. We walked him through both, verified that either layout kept the driver’s door swinging clear of the column when a vehicle was raised, and locked in symmetric because his vehicle mix was mostly trucks with front-heavy centers of gravity.

Anchor placement matters for another reason: proximity to slab expansion joints or edges. Anchors within 12 inches of a slab edge or expansion joint have significantly reduced pull-out strength. His slab had a control joint running down the center of the bay, and we shifted the column layout 6 inches south of center to keep all anchors at least 18 inches from the joint. Little detail, big difference in long-term anchor life. A car lift automotive shops anchor right through a control joint will loosen within a few years. Ours will not.

Checklist item 7: Delivery, install, and training day

Confirm the delivery window and the install day, and block time for a proper walk-through with your operator. His install was a Saturday, six hours from freight-off to first-vehicle-raised, plus another 45 minutes of walk-through on operation, arm restraints, safety-cam parking, daily inspection, and monthly lubrication. He signed our install acceptance form after the walk-through, which included the manufacturer-required load-cycle test on his own pickup.
