Nothing for the concrete work his forty-year-old floor was going to need. Nothing for freight or rigging. By the time we walked the building with him, the real project was roughly forty percent more than the equipment line item. That is not unusual, and it is not a scam — it is just how a car lift automotive project actually prices out. This article breaks the whole thing down line by line so you can build a budget that survives contact with your building.

Line Item One: The Equipment Itself
Equipment is the number everybody starts with and the only number most people plan for. For planning purposes, think in tiers rather than exact figures, because steel pricing and freight move constantly. Entry-level home and hobby four-posts and small two-posts sit in the low thousands. A commercial-grade 10,000 to 12,000 lb two-post from Rotary or Challenger sits in the mid thousands. A four-post alignment configuration with runway extensions, turnplates, rear slip plates and a rolling jack pair moves into the upper single-digit or low double-digit thousands. Heavy-duty truck equipment — 30,000 lb and up, or a set of four or six mobile columns — is a different conversation entirely and lands well into five figures.
What you are buying at each step up is not features, it is service life and parts availability. A value-brand unit and a Rotary unit both go up and down on day one. The difference shows at year seven when the carriage bearings are worn and one has a parts diagram with a live SKU and the other has a website that no longer exists. Then there is rigging. Getting columns off a pallet, walked into a bay, and stood up requires either a forklift or a proper gantry and know-how. Four-post runways are long and awkward and want two people minimum plus mechanical help. Mobile column sets ship as individual columns that each roll but are heavy and top-heavy on a ramp or a slope. If your building has a dock, this is easy. If it has a single overhead door with a two-inch lip and a gravel approach, which describes a lot of older shops in eastern Iowa, plan for it. One thing worth doing before the truck arrives: inspect and photograph every crate before you sign the delivery receipt. Line Item Three: Electrical Circuit and Phase Requirements

Most single-phase commercial power units run 208-230V and draw enough that you want a dedicated 30-amp circuit — not a shared circuit, not an extension from the compressor. Code and every manufacturer want a fused disconnect within sight of the lift so a tech can lock it out. If your panel is on the far wall, that is a conduit run, and conduit, wire, breaker, disconnect and an electrician’s day add up faster than most people expect.
Three-phase is the better answer if you have it. A three-phase power unit runs cooler, draws less current per leg, and generally lasts longer under heavy cycle counts, which matters in a truck shop where a lift may run all day with real weight on it. The catch is that if your building only has single-phase service, bringing in three-phase from the utility is a capital project, not a line item — sometimes tens of thousands depending on transformer and distance. The practical middle ground is either spec single-phase power units and accept the shorter motor life, or install a rotary phase converter sized correctly for the motor. We have done both. What we will not do is let someone run a 230V unit on a 115V leg or wire a three-phase motor with two legs and hope. Also confirm rotation direction on three-phase before you commission a car lift automotive power unit — a backwards-spinning pump will not build pressure and people assume the unit is bad when it is a two-wire swap. Line Item Four: Concrete, Coring and Slab Repair
Concrete is the biggest wildcard in any install budget. A 10,000 lb two-post typically wants a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete with proper reinforcement, and heavier units want thicker and stronger. Alignment configurations add a requirement for a genuinely level slab, because a rack that is out of level throws your readings and no amount of software compensation fixes a twisted runway set.
The problem is that most older Iowa shop floors are undocumented. We core a two-inch plug, measure the actual thickness, and check what is underneath. We have found three inches over dirt, we have found four inches of good concrete over a buried oil pit, and we have found expansion joints running exactly where an anchor needed to go. Each of those has a fix. A thin slab gets cut out in a pad around each column footprint, dug down, rebar tied in, and repoured to spec, then cured before we anchor. That is typically a two-visit job with a week between for cure, and it can add a meaningful percentage to the project. A four-post is more forgiving because it does not rely on anchors to resist tipping the way a two-post does, and it can often sit on a slab that would not pass for a two-post. That single fact has redirected more than a few purchases in our experience. Line Item Five: Install Labor and Commissioning
Install labor on a straightforward two-post in a good bay with power already run is typically most of a day for a two-person crew. Layout, drill, anchor, torque, set columns plumb, run the overhead or floor plate, hang cables and hoses, fill and bleed hydraulics, set the equalization, test the locks, cycle it loaded, and train whoever is going to use it. A four-post alignment setup takes longer because leveling the runways, setting the turnplate pockets, and calibrating with the alignment equipment is fussy work you do not rush.
Mobile column sets are their own thing — less install, more commissioning, because you are pairing columns, verifying the sync system, and teaching a crew to operate four or six columns as one machine without pinching a frame. Whatever the configuration, commissioning is not optional and it is where the money is well spent. We have been called to shops that self-installed and never bled the cylinders properly, so the lift shuddered on the way up for two years and chewed slide blocks. Others never torqued anchors to spec, and a column had walked a quarter inch off plumb. Add a line for electrical that ranges from modest — if your panel is close and you have capacity — to substantial if you need a long conduit run or a phase solution. Add install labor. Then add a concrete contingency that you hope you do not spend. On a simple install in a newer building the total might land only fifteen or twenty percent over the equipment price. On an alignment rack going into a 1970s truck shop with a marginal floor and single-phase service, the total can approach double.
The right way to avoid the surprise is to have someone walk the building before you buy anything. It takes us an hour to core a plug, look at your panel, measure ceiling height and door swing, and tell you what the real number is.
