Start With the Job, Not the Brochure

The operator’s temptation was to buy the biggest thing he could afford. We pushed back. Oil pan gasket work on half-ton pickups, crossovers, and the occasional 3/4-ton service truck does not require a 15,000 lb machine. A well-specified 10,000 or 12,000 lb asymmetric two-post handles that fleet all day with room left over. Spending the difference on a bigger capacity would have eaten the budget he needed for wiring and concrete.

What does matter is arm configuration and clearance. Pan work means the tech is standing under the engine bay with a transmission jack or a pan support, so you want the front arms swung well clear and a column spacing that doesn’t force a low-slung sedan into a three-point turn to get positioned. We measured his bay at 24 feet deep with a 12-foot ceiling — plenty for a clearfloor overhead model, which keeps the drive-through path open for the drain pans and creepers a lube shop already owns. Picking equipment around the actual work is the single cheapest decision in the whole project, because every later cost — anchors, wiring, overhead clearance, even shop insurance — flows downstream from that first spec.

Equipment Tiers and What the Money Buys

We sell into three broad tiers, and it helps to know what separates them. Entry-level imports land in the low four figures for a two-post. Mid-tier equipment — the stuff we install most often in independent shops — runs roughly double that. Premium American-built columns from Rotary or Challenger sit meaningfully higher again, often two to three times the entry number by the time you add options.

What you buy going up the ladder is not lifting height. It’s the carriage bearings, the arm restraint teeth, the lock ladder machining, the cylinder seal quality, and — the one nobody thinks about until year six — parts availability. We stock cables, cylinders, carriages, arm pins, and lock assemblies for the major brands, and the honest truth is that a premium car lift automotive package stays serviceable for twenty-five years while the cheapest units become orphans when the importer changes catalogs. For a franchise operator with a lease term and a resale horizon, that lifecycle math usually justifies the mid-to-premium tier. For a shop testing a new service line, entry-tier can be defensible — as long as you go in knowing what you traded away. We’d rather have that conversation before the freight truck shows up than after.

Electrical Circuits and Phase Requirements for a Car Lift Automotive Install

Here’s where the northwest Iowa project got interesting. His building had 120V convenience circuits and one 240V single-phase run for a compressor. Nothing else. Most two-post power units ship configured for 208-230V single phase, drawing on a dedicated 20 or 30 amp circuit depending on motor size. That’s the common case and it’s not expensive — a dedicated breaker, conduit, a disconnect within sight of the unit, and a receptacle or hard-wire termination.

Three-phase is a different animal. If your building already has three-phase service, order the power unit configured for it: the motor runs cooler, starts smoother, and typically pulls less amperage per leg. If you don’t have three-phase and the utility wants a transformer and a new service drop, that single line item can exceed the price of the lift itself. We’ve seen quotes in the five-figure range for rural Iowa service upgrades. In that situation, buy the single-phase unit. Full stop. The performance difference on a car lift automotive package running 30 cycles a day is negligible, and nobody has ever regretted skipping a utility upgrade. One more caution: verify the actual voltage at the panel under load, not the nameplate. Concrete: The Line Item Everyone Forgets

Two-post lifts transfer enormous point loads into the slab through six anchors per column. Manufacturers publish minimums — typically four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for lighter units, and five to six inches of 3,000 PSI or better for 12,000 lb and up. Those are minimums, not targets. Age matters too; concrete should be fully cured, which in practice means at least 28 days and preferably much older.

The lube shop’s floor was a 1980s pour with visible cracking near the old drain trench. We cored two test plugs and found four and a quarter inches over questionable base. That meant cutting two pads roughly four feet square, digging out, and pouring six-inch reinforced sections tied into the existing slab. Add a few days of cure time and a modest concrete contractor invoice. It was not a budget-killer, but it was not free either, and it was invisible on every online lift listing he’d browsed. Our rule is simple: core the floor before you order. A twenty-minute test tells you whether you’re anchoring into something trustworthy or building a liability. Freight, Rigging, and Getting It Through the Door

A two-post ships as two columns, a carton of arms, a hydraulic power unit, and a hardware box — typically 1,600 to 2,200 pounds total on a pallet or strapped bundle. Standard LTL freight to a commercial address with a dock is the cheapest path. No dock means a liftgate, and liftgate service on a 1,000 lb column is an add-on charge that surprises people. Residential or limited-access delivery adds more. Budget several hundred dollars for freight on most Iowa deliveries, more if you’re out past the interstate corridors.

Then there’s rigging inside the building. Columns arrive lying down and have to be stood up, walked into position, plumbed, and anchored. We bring the equipment to do that safely. If you’re self-installing, a forklift or a good engine hoist plus three people is the realistic minimum — we’ve heard too many stories of a column going over. The other freight detail worth knowing: inspect the shipment on the dock before signing. Bent arm tubes and dinged power units happen, and a clean signature makes a damage claim nearly impossible to win. Photograph the pallet, note anything questionable on the bill of lading, and call us. Installation Labor and Certified Inspection

Professional installation of a standard two-post typically runs a day for a two-person crew, assuming the slab is ready and power is at the location. That covers layout, anchoring, column plumbing, overhead assembly, hydraulic connection, bleeding, cycling, lock testing, and a full function check. Priced as a package, install labor on a straightforward car lift automotive project usually lands somewhere between a fifth and a third of the equipment cost — less on premium units, proportionally more on budget ones.

What you’re actually paying for is the anchor torque spec being met, the columns being genuinely plumb within tolerance, and the locks engaging on every position across both carriages. Get any of those wrong and the equipment will still go up and down for a while, then develop a lean or a lock skip that costs more to correct than the install ever would have. We also strongly recommend annual ALI-certified inspection once the unit is in service. Most insurers and franchise agreements now expect documented inspection records, and if a tech is ever hurt under a vehicle, that paperwork matters enormously. Adding It All Up for the Northwest Iowa Bay

Here’s how that project actually stacked. Mid-tier 10,000 lb asymmetric two-post: the largest single line. Freight with liftgate: a few hundred. Concrete cut, pour, and cure for two anchor pads: roughly a tenth of the equipment cost. Electrical — dedicated 30-amp single-phase circuit, conduit run about forty feet, disconnect, and permit: a similar order of magnitude to the concrete. Professional installation and first inspection: about a quarter of the equipment number.

All in, the ancillary work added roughly 40 to 50 percent on top of the lift price. That ratio holds up well across the shops we serve, and it’s the number we tell every buyer to plan around. If you budget only for the equipment, you will be short. If you budget equipment plus half, you’ll almost always be fine and occasionally pleasantly surprised.
