The sticker on a car lift automotive package is the part everyone shops, and it is rarely the part that surprises them. What surprises them is the freight bill, the forklift rental, the electrician’s invoice, and the half day of shop downtime nobody budgeted. We had a heavy-duty truck shop owner in Waukee call us a couple of years back after buying a lift online for what looked like a great number. By the time the crate sat in his gravel lot with no way to move it, he had spent more on logistics than he saved on the purchase. This article is the cost breakdown we wish he’d had — every line item from the order confirmation to the first vehicle in the air.

Line One: The Equipment Itself

Start with what you are actually buying, because “a lift” covers an enormous range. A two-post in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb class sits at the entry end of commercial pricing. Move to 12,000 or 15,000 lb and you are paying for heavier columns, bigger cylinders, and beefier arm assemblies. A four-post with runways, a rolling jack, drip trays, and a jack platform lands higher again. Heavy-duty four-post and mobile column sets for Class 7 and 8 trucks are a different conversation entirely, often several times the cost of a passenger-car unit.

The Waukee shop was doing frame-off restoration and metal work on vintage trucks alongside their regular diesel business. They needed a four-post they could park a project on for weeks at a time, plus a rolling jack so a tech could pull wheels without breaking the setup down. That combination is not the cheapest configuration, but it was the right one for how they actually worked. This is where we push back on customers most often: buying a smaller car lift automotive package than your work demands is not a savings, it is a deferred purchase. Spend the extra two tiers up now and you are not shopping again in four years when the shop’s mix shifts toward heavier vehicles.

Line Two: Freight, and Why It Bites

Lift columns and runways are heavy, long, and awkward — the exact profile that LTL carriers price aggressively. A two-post ships as two or three crates and can run several hundred dollars to a commercial address with a dock. A four-post with runways is longer and heavier and costs more. Then come the accessorials, which is where the quoted freight number stops matching the invoice: residential delivery surcharge, limited-access surcharge for a rural or farm address, liftgate service, inside delivery, redelivery if nobody is there, and detention if the driver waits.

The liftgate charge is the one people skip and then regret. A standard dry van has no way to get a 1,400 lb crate to the ground. If you do not have a dock and you do not have a forklift or telehandler on site, you need liftgate service ordered at the time of booking — and even then, some liftgates will not handle the heaviest crates or the longest runway bundles. We have watched drivers refuse to unload because the crate exceeded their gate rating. When we quote a car lift automotive delivery, we ask about your dock, your equipment, and your driveway surface before we book anything, because a gravel approach in March is its own problem in Iowa.

Line Three: Unloading and On-Site Handling

Assume the crate lands somewhere other than where the lift goes. Moving it is a cost. A half-day forklift or telehandler rental from a local yard is one option, and it is usually money well spent because a proper machine with forks long enough to cradle a runway bundle does in ten minutes what four people with pipe rollers do in an hour. If you already own a skid steer with forks, great — just verify the lift capacity at load center, because a 1,600 lb crate at the end of long forks is not the same as 1,600 lb tight to the carriage.

The Waukee shop had a skid steer but no long forks, so we brought a telehandler with our crew. That is one of the reasons we prefer to handle the whole chain: when the same people who unload the crate are the people who set the columns, nothing gets damaged in a handoff and nobody argues about who bent a runway. If you are managing it yourself, plan your staging area on flat concrete, keep the crates off dirt so the packaging does not wick moisture, and open and inventory everything within a few days of delivery. Freight damage claims have short filing windows, and a missing bag of anchors or a bent arm pad discovered three weeks later is your problem, not the carrier’s.

Line Four: Concrete Prep

Concrete is the wild card in any car lift automotive budget. If your slab is already thick enough, at the right strength, flat, and free of nearby joints or cracks, this line is zero. If it isn’t, it is real money. Two-post lifts want a specified minimum thickness and compressive strength under each column, and higher-capacity units want more. Older Iowa shop floors and converted farm buildings routinely come in thinner than expected, sometimes with no reinforcement at all.

The fix is a saw-cut and pour: remove a footprint under each column, dig to depth, add rebar, pour to spec, and wait for cure. Budget for the concrete contractor, the disposal, and roughly a week of cure before anchoring — longer in cold weather unless you are blanketing and heating. That waiting period is often the part shop owners hate most, because the lift is sitting in crates while the bay is out of service. Plan the pour before the lift ships if you can. Line Five: Electrical and Air

Almost every lift needs a dedicated circuit. Most single-phase power units run 208-230V and want a properly sized breaker and disconnect near the column. Three-phase units in commercial shops need the matching service, and if your building only has single-phase, that is either a different power unit order or a conversation with the utility. Either way, an electrician’s half-day to a full day is a normal line item, and running conduit across a finished shop costs more than running it during a remodel.

Air is the quieter requirement. Many two-posts use an air-actuated lock release, and four-posts with air-operated rolling jacks obviously need a supply line at the lift. If your compressor is at the far end of the building, add the cost of running a line and a drop. None of these numbers are large individually. Together, electrical plus air commonly adds a meaningful chunk to a car lift automotive project, and it is the category customers most often forget when they compare an online price to our installed quote. When we send a proposal, the power and air requirements are spelled out so your electrician can bid from the same sheet we are working from.

Line Six: Installation Labor and Commissioning

A two-post install with good access and good concrete is typically a one-day job for a two-person crew: set columns, plumb and shim, anchor with the specified torque, route hoses or overhead cables, fill and bleed the hydraulics, adjust equalization, cycle the locks, and load-test. A four-post takes similar time plus runway alignment and rolling-jack fitment. Add time for tight bays, second-floor slabs, or anything requiring rigging.

Commissioning is the part that separates a professional install from a weekend project. Cable tension has to be equalized so both carriages rise together, locks have to engage simultaneously, and the hydraulic system has to be fully bled or you will chase a spongy, uneven rise for months. We have been called out to “fix” plenty of self-installed lifts where the actual problem was air in the cylinder and cables that were never adjusted after the initial break-in stretch. That callout costs more than having it installed correctly the first time. Adding It Up: What a Realistic All-In Budget Looks Like

Here is how we frame it for customers. Take the equipment price as your baseline. Add roughly ten to twenty percent for freight and accessorials on a typical delivery, more if you are rural or have no dock. Add a few hundred for unloading equipment if we are not bringing ours. Add electrical, which ranges from modest to substantial depending on panel distance and phase. Add concrete, which is either zero or a few thousand with no middle ground. Add install labor. And add the value of the shop time you lose during the process, which for a busy bay is not trivial.

For the Waukee truck shop, the all-in number came to noticeably more than the base equipment price — and the lift has been earning since. The point of a cost breakdown is not to talk anyone out of buying. It is so you can compare a low online price against a delivered-and-installed quote honestly, because those two numbers are measuring completely different things.
