Diagnosing a Leaking Two-Post Cylinder in the Field
The first step on any used two-post evaluation is a bare-cylinder test at full rise with a rated load. You put a known weight on the arms, cycle it to full rise, kick in the safety cams, then slowly relieve hydraulic pressure and watch what happens. If the safety cams catch the load and hold indefinitely with the cylinder depressurized, the cams are fine. If they slip, the lift is a walk-away regardless of cylinder condition. Then you re-pressurize, disengage cams, and watch the cylinder for external weeping at the rod seal, the base port, and the top seal.
On this Marion evaluation the cams held perfectly. The rod seal was weeping at a rate of maybe two drops per minute at full pressure, and the base port was dry. That is a classic rod-seal-only failure pattern, which is the least expensive rebuild in a car lift automotive cylinder. Cause: dust and grit had abraded the rod chrome over years of use in a shop without a clean cylinder-boot, and the polyurethane rod seal had lost its lip. Total repair estimate we gave the mobile mechanic: under three hundred dollars in parts.
What is in a Two-Post Cylinder Rebuild Kit
A standard rebuild kit for a mid-market two-post hydraulic cylinder contains a rod seal, a wiper seal, a piston seal or piston o-ring, a static base seal, and a set of backup rings. Higher-end kits from OEM sources also include a new bronze rod bushing and a new piston wear band. If the kit does not include the wear band you inspect the old one and reuse it if the wear is under 0.010 inch. If the rod chrome is scored deeper than a thumbnail catch, no rebuild kit will hold a seal against that damage and you replace the cylinder outright.
On this job the rod chrome was clean because the previous owner had at least kept a rubber boot over the rod exit. We ordered a full OEM kit and a spare set of backup rings for insurance. Bench Rebuild vs. In-Shop Rebuild
You can rebuild a two-post cylinder two ways. On the bench, meaning you disconnect the cylinder from the lift, extract it, disassemble it in a clean workspace, and reinstall. Or in-shop, meaning you disconnect the hydraulic line and rod pin, extract the piston-and-rod assembly from the still-mounted barrel, and rebuild the seals through the top of the mounted cylinder. Bench is cleaner and more thorough but takes a full day of downtime. In-shop is faster but risks reinstalling contaminated fluid and leaving abrasive dust in the barrel.
For a shop with real workflow depending on the lift, in-shop is usually the right call because the downtime cost of a bench rebuild is higher than the small quality delta. For a lift that is being commissioned into a new bay, bench is the right call every time because you have no downtime cost yet. On this Marion job we bench-rebuilt because the mechanic had not yet moved into the leased bay. That gave us the cleanest possible restart on the car lift automotive he was buying, and it let us pressure-test the cylinder to 3,000 PSI before it ever saw the shop.
Fluid Type, Fluid Change, and Contamination
The single most common reason a rebuilt cylinder fails again quickly is a dirty reservoir. When you install a rebuilt cylinder into a lift with old fluid, the abrasive particles that killed the first seal are still floating in the reservoir waiting to kill the second one. A proper cylinder rebuild always includes a full fluid drain, reservoir cleaning, and refill with fresh ISO 32 or ISO 46 hydraulic oil. Never automatic transmission fluid, regardless of what any old timer tells you. ATF has additive packages that attack polyurethane seals.
On this Marion job we drained roughly three gallons of black fluid out of the reservoir, wiped the interior with lint-free rags, and refilled with fresh ISO 46 rated for shop-lift service. The mobile mechanic watched the entire process because he wanted to learn to do the fluid changes himself on his own timeline. Full fluid change on a modern car lift automotive is roughly a three-year interval for shop-duty use, and it takes about 45 minutes if you have the reservoir plumbed correctly. That is the boring maintenance nobody wants to do and everyone should.
When to Rebuild vs. When to Replace
Rebuild when: the rod chrome is clean, the barrel bore is clean, the seals are the failure point, and the manufacturer still supports a kit for that cylinder. Replace when: the rod chrome is scored, the barrel is pitted from long-standing water contamination, the piston or rod is bent from a load event, or the manufacturer does not support parts for that cylinder anymore. Replace also when: the age of the cylinder is over twenty years and the shop uses the lift for daily production, because the metal fatigue math starts to matter at that age even if visible parts look fine.
On this Marion job we chose rebuild because every rebuild criterion was met. The lift was fifteen years old, well maintained on the structural side, and the cylinder was in good bones. Total rebuild time from start to bench-tested and reinstalled was about four hours. Ongoing Cylinder Care and Inspection Cadence
Every 90 days: wipe the exposed rod with a clean lint-free rag and look for any streaking, pitting, or corrosion. Every six months: cycle the lift empty to full rise, hold at top with cams engaged, and watch for any external weeping at the rod seal. Every year: sample the hydraulic fluid into a clean glass container and look for cloudiness, color darkening, or metal glitter. Every three years: full fluid change. Every ten years or 50,000 cycles: precautionary rod-seal-and-wiper replacement.
That cadence keeps a car lift automotive cylinder in service almost indefinitely. The lifts we rebuild that die early die from missed cadence, not from any inherent design failure. Owners who buy a lift and then never look at the cylinder for fifteen years end up replacing whole assemblies.
