The Shop, the Vehicles, and the Original Plan
The builder does suspension lifts, bumpers, winches, and long-travel work on half-tons and mid-size trucks, plus routine fluid service for the customers he builds for. His stated need was simple: get trucks up high enough to drop skid plates and pull drain plugs without crawling, and hold them there long enough to do a full fluid service without babysitting a jack. A four-post made sense. Runways handle a lifted truck’s odd track width without adapter gymnastics, and drive-on means a tech is not chasing pinch welds under an armored rocker panel.
He picked a 14,000 lb model with a rolling jack so he could still get wheels off for brake and hub work. Capacity was right, ceiling height was right at just under 13 feet, and the slab was a 6-inch pour that had cured for a decade. On paper this was a two-day install. Then we asked what was in the panel. He had a 100-amp service, mostly single-phase 120V branch circuits, one 240V circuit for a welder, and no spare breaker spaces. The power unit on his lift needed a dedicated 220V single-phase 20-amp circuit. That is where the schedule went sideways, and it is where most of these projects stall.
Single Phase vs Three Phase: What Actually Matters
Most people hear “three phase” and assume it means more power or more capability. For a car lift automotive power unit, that is not really the distinction. Three-phase motors run cooler, draw less current per leg, and last longer under heavy duty cycles, which is why dealership and fleet shops with three-phase service almost always spec it. But a single-phase 220V motor lifts the same weight at the same speed. The difference shows up in electrical cost and in how hard the motor works when it runs forty times a day.
The practical rule we give shops: if you already have three-phase in the building, use it. If you do not, do not chase it. Bringing three-phase service to a building that does not have it is a utility project measured in weeks and thousands of dollars, and for a two-bay shop doing fluid service it almost never pays back. Order the single-phase motor instead. What you cannot do is order a three-phase unit and hope to run it on single phase — that requires a phase converter, which adds cost, heat, and one more thing to fail. We have had to swap power units after the fact because someone ordered from a spec sheet without checking their own panel, and a motor swap after install is the most avoidable expense in this whole business.
Breaker Sizing, Wire Gauge, and the Run Length Nobody Measures
The nameplate on a typical 220V single-phase lift motor calls for a dedicated 20-amp circuit, and some larger or heavy-duty units want 30. “Dedicated” is the operative word. Sharing the circuit with a compressor is how you get nuisance trips right in the middle of a lift cycle, because both motors have high inrush at startup. We have watched a lift stall halfway up when a compressor kicked on, and the shop owner blamed the lift.
Run length is the sleeper issue. Voltage drop over a long run makes the motor draw more current to do the same work, which makes it run hot and shortens its life. On the northern Missouri job the panel was on the opposite wall from the bay — about 90 feet of run once you account for going up, across, and back down. At that distance, upsizing from 12 gauge to 10 gauge kept the drop inside a reasonable window. That is a $40 wire decision that protects a motor worth many times more. When we do a site walk, we measure that run with a tape and note the panel location, spare breaker spaces, and service size on the quote. How We Solved It Without a Service Upgrade
The fix was less dramatic than the builder feared. His 100-amp service had headroom on paper — the welder was intermittent, the compressor was a 5 hp single-phase unit, and the lighting load was LED and trivial. A load calculation showed he could add a 20-amp 220V circuit without upgrading the service. What he needed was panel space, and a local electrician handled that with a pair of tandem breakers to free up two full-size spaces.
Total electrical work was under a day. The electrician ran 10-gauge in EMT along the ceiling and dropped to a disconnect within sight of the power unit, which is both code and just good practice when a tech needs to kill power fast. We came in two days later, set the columns, leveled the runways, plumbed the hydraulics, cycled the safeties, and trained him on the rolling jack. The whole install landed inside the original window — the only thing that changed was that the electrical happened first instead of becoming a two-week delay. That sequence is the single biggest lesson from this job. A car lift automotive install goes smooth when power is done and tested before the equipment arrives, and it goes badly when it is not.
Car Lift Automotive Power Requirements by Lift Type
Requirements vary more than people expect. A residential four-post storage lift often runs on 110V, which is why they are popular for home garages — you plug it into an existing outlet and go. Duty cycle is low, the motor is small, and nobody is running it forty times a day. A commercial two-post or four-post in a working shop almost always wants 220V single phase at minimum, because the larger motor lifts faster and handles repeated cycles.
Move up to heavy-duty and the numbers climb again. Mobile column sets have a power unit per column, and each one needs a receptacle within reach of its cord — that is a floor layout problem as much as an electrical one. Inground lifts add a pit and often a separate sump pump circuit. Alignment lifts with lighting and turnplate accessories may want a second circuit for the accessories so the lift motor stays clean. Fluid Service Realities on a Four-Post
The builder’s use case — oil changes and fluid service on lifted trucks — shaped a few decisions beyond electrical. Runway length mattered because long-wheelbase crew cabs need approach room, and he was tight on depth. We spec’d the standard runway with open front so the truck could sit with the front tires just past the ramps and still leave room to walk the nose. Drip trays between the runways were not optional; on a shop doing differential and transfer case service, oil on a runway is a slip hazard and a stain problem.
The rolling jack earned its cost within a month. Trucks with aftermarket suspension have odd frame geometry, and being able to slide a jack under a specific point rather than reposition the whole vehicle saves real time. One thing we flagged: the rolling jack on most four-posts runs off shop air or its own small hydraulic pump, so budget an air drop near the bay. That is another item that is easy at install and annoying later. What to Nail Down Before You Order
Write down five things and send them to whoever is quoting your lift. One: service size in amps and whether you have single or three phase. Two: panel location and how many spare full-size breaker spaces you actually have — open the door and count. Three: approximate run distance from panel to the lift location, measured along the path the wire will travel, not straight across the floor. Four: what else is on the circuit you were planning to use. Five: ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, including light fixtures and door tracks.
