The best way to understand what a car lift automotive purchase actually looks like in year one is to follow one shop from the pour of their concrete slab through their first twelve months of state inspections. We are Auto Lift Services, based in Ames, Iowa, and we recently walked an RV and trailer shop in northern Missouri through exactly that arc. They run annual DOT and state inspections on trailers and tow vehicles, they poured a fresh slab specifically for the lift bay, and they were meticulous documentarians. The result is a case study we still reference when a similar buyer calls.

The slab pour: six inches, rebar on 18-inch centers
The shop poured a brand new concrete slab in the lift bay before we ever quoted a car lift automotive package. That is unusual and it is also ideal. They went six inches deep, 4,000 psi mix, with number four rebar on 18-inch centers and a plastic vapor barrier under a layer of sand. They cured the pour for 28 days before scheduling install. The manufacturer minimum for a 12,000-pound two-post is four inches of 3,000 psi. Their pour was well over spec, which meant anchor pull-out was never going to be a concern.
The lesson we take from this shop is that if you are pouring new concrete anyway, spend the small additional cost to go to six inches with rebar. The added material is measured in hundreds of dollars, not thousands, and the slab will hold every lift you ever install on it. Retrofit slabs that are too thin end up either torn out and repoured, or overlaid with a bonded topping. Both are more expensive than doing it right the first time. When we hear a customer say they are building the shop from the ground up, we always talk slab first.
Install week and the state inspection setup
Install ran three days for this shop because they were also having the electrical service upgraded to 208-volt three-phase in the same week. Day one was anchor drilling on the fresh slab and column placement. Day two was overhead assembly and cable routing. Day three was hydraulic hookup, electrical hookup, and ALI safety testing. Our installer stayed on site all three days and documented every step. Photos and torque values were emailed to the shop for their records.
The car lift automotive setup was configured specifically for annual inspection work. That means the arms were adjusted to reach the pinch welds on a Ford Super Duty as easily as on a compact SUV, the lift height was set to full extension for undercarriage inspection, and the safety locks were tested at every one of their engagement positions. The shop needed the lift certified for inspection use by the state, which required an ALI Gold certificate on file. We provided that certificate along with the install documentation. The state inspector accepted it without follow-up questions.
The first three months: 120 inspections and a tire rotation habit
In the first three months, the shop ran roughly 120 annual inspections through the lift. Most of that work was tow vehicles for RV customers, but they also ran a scattering of half-ton pickups and passenger cars for their overflow business. The lift performed exactly as expected. No noises, no leaks, no unexpected behavior. The technicians made the mistake of assuming that meant they could skip the monthly maintenance checklist. They could not.
At the ninety-day mark, we visited for a walkthrough and found that the cable tension had drifted slightly on the right column. Cables stretch during the first hundred cycles as they seat into their sheaves. That is normal. Adjusting them back to spec took ten minutes. If they had run another ninety days without an adjustment, the safeties would have started catching unevenly and the shop would have been calling us in a panic. This is the single most common first-year car lift automotive issue and it is entirely preventable with a quarterly walkthrough.
Month six: a rebar strike and what happens next
The shop wanted to add a second lift in an adjacent bay at month six. Our installer showed up, drilled the first anchor hole, and hit a rebar bar dead center at three inches down. That is a rebar strike, and it is a normal outcome on a slab with rebar on 18-inch centers. The fix is straightforward: move the anchor location four inches, redrill, and continue. It adds about 30 minutes to the install. If you are the shop owner watching, it can look alarming. It is not.
What matters is that the installer knows how to handle a rebar strike safely without weakening the anchor pattern. Two anchors per column footprint need to be in solid concrete, not partially into a rebar bar. A car lift automotive install that catches a rebar strike and moves the anchor is the correct outcome. A car lift automotive install that ignores a rebar strike and drills through the bar is a failure waiting to happen. Ask your installer specifically how they handle rebar. If they cannot answer, hire a different installer.
Month nine: the trailer axle job that stress-tested capacity
At month nine the shop had a customer bring in a heavy-duty tow rig with a fifth-wheel hitch and about 1,500 pounds of tools in the bed. The technician set it on the pads and started the lift. It went up. It came down. It went up again. The 12,000-pound rated car lift automotive setup did exactly what it was designed to do because the vehicle was, generously, 8,500 pounds loaded. The margin between the lift rating and the actual load is what keeps a lift safe over 20 years of service.
The mistake we see rural shops make is buying a 10,000-pound lift and then routinely putting 9,500-pound trucks on it. Technically fine. Practically, a mistake. If your service mix includes anything over 8,000 pounds regularly, buy the 12,000-pound lift. If it includes anything over 10,000 pounds, buy the 15,000-pound lift. The upcharge is small compared to the peace of mind. This particular shop chose 12,000 pounds for exactly this reason and never regretted it.
Month twelve: the annual inspection and the state audit
At the twelve-month mark, the shop had an ALI-certified inspector come out and run a full annual inspection on the lift itself. That is different from the state inspection they do on customer vehicles. This is the inspection of the shop equipment. The inspector checked cables, hoses, cylinders, safety locks, arm restraints, hydraulic fluid, and electrical connections. Everything passed on the first try, largely because the shop had been running their monthly maintenance checklist without fail.
Two weeks later, the state auditor showed up unannounced to verify the shop’s inspection facility. He asked to see the annual lift inspection certificate and the ALI Gold documentation. Both were in a binder next to the lift. The audit lasted 20 minutes and ended with a handshake. Shops that keep their lift paperwork organized breeze through state audits. Shops that do not, do not. The organized approach starts on delivery day and continues quietly for the life of the lift.
What we tell every new inspection shop
The first year of a car lift automotive setup at an inspection shop is mostly about habits. Pour the slab correctly, install it correctly, register the warranty, run the monthly maintenance, and pay for the annual ALI inspection. Do those five things and the lift will pass state audits for the next 20 years. Skip any one of them and the audit becomes a scramble. The shop in this story got everything right, and their first year was as boring as an inspection shop’s first year can be. Boring is exactly what you want.
