He didn’t want to keep hauling them to a general shop two counties over every time a tire wore unevenly or the steering pulled after a curb strike. We spent the better part of an hour on the phone talking through arm geometry, ceiling height, floor slab thickness, and whether symmetric or asymmetric was the right call for a garage full of long-nose classics. Why the Collector Wanted a Car Lift Automotive Setup in the First Place

The owner had been running a low-cost drive-on aluminum ramp for tire rotations and oil changes for about a decade, and it was enough for basic maintenance. But once he added an air-ride Corvette and a lowered Camaro, the ramps stopped clearing the front lip and he was out of options for real underbody work. He also wanted to do at-home alignment checks — toe, camber, and thrust angle — because the classic cars needed constant readjustment after every long drive on Iowa’s frost-heaved county roads. A car lift automotive install was the right answer, but we spent a while narrowing which specific type made sense.

He initially assumed a two-post asymmetric would be fine because that is what he had seen at every corner tire shop growing up. We pushed back gently. For a collector doing alignment work on his own schedule, a four-post with a rolling jack is usually a better fit. The car sits on its wheels for the alignment measurements, and the rolling jack lets him pop the wheels off when he needs to swap suspension bushings or drop a subframe. Two-post lifts are faster for tire and brake work, but they are not designed for tires-on alignment measurement, and no amount of aftermarket accessory jury-rigging will change that fact.

Symmetric vs Asymmetric Arms: What Actually Matters for Alignment

Even after we landed on a four-post, the owner kept circling back to a two-post question — should the arms be symmetric or asymmetric if he ever added a second bay. The short version is that this only matters if you are going to run a two-post. On a four-post you are driving onto runways, so arm swing is not part of the equation. But it is worth understanding for anyone building out a garage where a second lift might eventually go in alongside the primary machine.

An asymmetric lift has arms of different lengths — shorter in front, longer in the back — and the columns are rotated about 30 degrees. The idea is to let the door swing open past the column when a driver climbs in. That works great for a modern sedan or a small SUV. The problem shows up with long-hood, short-cab classics. A 1965 Impala will not sit right on an asymmetric because the balance point pushes forward, and you can end up with too much weight ahead of the columns. A symmetric two-post keeps arms even front-to-rear, which is friendlier to older iron. We told him if he ever added a second bay, symmetric was the right pick for his fleet. That is a real car lift automotive decision most shoppers never think about until it is too late to change.

Site Survey and Slab Thickness — The Boring Stuff That Saves You

Before we shipped anything, we sent out our standard site-survey questionnaire and asked for two things. A picture of the anchor location with a tape measure showing ceiling height, and either a build receipt or a core sample of the floor. His outbuilding had been poured seven years earlier at 4.5 inches with fiber mesh. That is fine for a four-post surface-mount lift, but a two-post would have needed 4.25 inches minimum of 3,000 psi cured concrete with no rebar in the anchor field. We asked him to send a photo from directly above one of the anchor spots so we could look for cracks or slab joints within 12 inches. Anything in that zone means the anchor may not hold rated load.

Ceiling height came in at 12 feet 4 inches clear, which is comfortable for most four-post lifts. He also had a north-facing overhead door 10 feet wide, so drive-through was doable without repositioning the car. We planned column locations 11 feet 6 inches on-center, giving the driver door room to open once a wide car was on the runways. Little things — but they turn a car lift automotive install into a smooth day rather than a bad one that ends with someone calling an inspector.

The Install Day: Unloading, Anchoring, First Raise

The freight truck rolled in on a Wednesday morning with the crate on its side, which is normal because a four-post ships flat and heavy. We brought a rough-terrain forklift to the driveway and staged everything just inside the door before starting assembly. Two techs took about six hours to build the runways, stand the columns, thread the cables, and set the sheaves. Anchoring the columns took another 90 minutes because we hit an aggregate pocket on one hole and had to redrill three inches over. That happens. Every slab has a story hidden inside it.

Once the columns were plumb and the runways were level, we lifted an empty runway to full height, dropped it back down, and cycled the safety locks three times before putting any weight on the deck. Then he drove his daily-driver F-150 up as a test load. Perfect margin on a 14,000-pound lift. We walked him through the load-cycling procedure, the manual cable-tension check that Rotary calls for every 30 days, and the alignment plate placement so his turntables would sit dead center. He signed the training log, we shook hands, and we drove back to Ames. A car lift automotive install is only as good as the training that follows it.

First Six Months — What We Heard Back from Dubuque

We called at the 30-day mark, again at 90, and once at six months. He had not done a full alignment yet because he was still saving up for a proper turntable set, but he had rotated tires on all four collector cars, done a brake job on the Camaro, and dropped the transmission on his F-150 for a rear-main seal. The lift was performing exactly the way we expected. He mentioned one thing we hear a lot from home collectors — the sound of the safety locks setting sounded louder than he expected the first few times, and he wanted to know if that was normal. It is. Steel-on-steel latching is loud in a quiet outbuilding.

He also asked about adding a drip pan tray between the runways because he was worried about differential fluid dripping onto his epoxy floor during service. We shipped him one the next day at cost. Alignment Plate Placement and Toe Plate Turntables

For anyone else planning a car lift automotive setup with alignment work in mind, the plate placement is where most home installs go sideways. The front turntables need to sit at the exact wheelbase center of the vehicles you will align most often. For our Dubuque customer, that meant we cut into the runway slip-plate area at 104 inches from the rear stop, matching his Camaro’s wheelbase. If he had tried to align a modern sedan with a 112-inch wheelbase on that setup, the front tires would sit off the turntables and any reading would be junk.

The rear slip plates are less picky because they just need to allow lateral movement, but they still need to be square with the runway centerline and greased under the plate surface. We taught him how to pull them, wipe them, and re-grease them once a year. He also asked about doing camber and caster adjustments with the wheels loaded, and we walked through why an alignment rack is different than a flat garage floor. The whole car sits on its wheels at ride height, and that is what makes the geometry readings valid. It is also why a two-post will not do alignments properly no matter what a YouTube video shows.

What We’d Do Differently on the Next Car Lift Automotive Install

Looking back at that install, there are two things we would change. First, we would have shipped him the drip pan up front rather than after the first differential service. It is a modest add-on and it protects an epoxy floor from every fluid he will ever spill. Second, we would have had him pour a 6-inch pad in the alignment zone rather than trusting the existing 4.5-inch slab. It is holding fine, but a thicker pad would give more anchor bite and let him upgrade to a heavier-duty lift later if he ever moved into truck work.
