A tire-and-alignment shop owner in Marion called us on a Tuesday morning because his alignment bay had turned into a slow-motion problem: every night the driver-side runway settled about an inch and a half, and every morning his first alignment of the day was off before he even hooked up the heads. He had been topping off fluid for two months and mopping the floor under the power unit. What he actually had was a failed rod seal on one cylinder and a car lift automotive system that was no longer holding a level plane — which for alignment work is not an inconvenience, it is a measurement error you are selling to customers. Here is how we walked that job, safety first.

Step one: get the vehicle off it and lock it out
Nobody wants to hear this, but the first thing you do with a leaking cylinder is stop using the equipment. A rod seal that weeps today is a rod seal that passes fluid faster tomorrow, and hydraulic descent on a lift is not a graceful process once the seal lets go completely. Lower the runways or arms all the way to the floor, get the vehicle off, and physically lock out the power. Breaker off, lockout tag on the disconnect, and a note on the control handle so the tech who comes in at seven does not cheerfully run a Silverado up onto it.
Then look at the mechanical safety locks before you look at the hydraulics. On a four-post, the locks are what actually hold the load — the cylinder raises it, but the latches hold it. If your locks engage crisply on all four columns and you can rest the load on them, you have a real safety margin while you diagnose. If a lock is sticky, bent, or has been zip-tied out of the way by somebody who got tired of the noise, that is now the number one repair on the list, ahead of the seal. We have opened up more than one Marion-area bay where the leak was the reported problem and a defeated safety latch was the actual emergency. Fix the holding system first, then the lifting system.
Diagnosing whether it’s really the cylinder
Not every settling lift has a bad cylinder, and rebuilding one you did not need to rebuild costs you a day. There are three common culprits: an internal seal in the cylinder, a leaking hose or fitting, and a power unit check valve or lowering valve that is not seating. They present differently. External wetness on the rod and a clean housing points at the rod seal. Fluid running down a hose or pooling under a fitting points at the plumbing. A perfectly dry system that still settles overnight usually points at the valve block in the power unit, because the fluid is going back to the reservoir instead of onto your floor.
Our test is boring and effective. Wipe everything down bone dry, raise the unit to about chest height with no vehicle on it, rest it on the locks, and mark the rod position with a paint pen. Come back in an hour, then in eight. Where the fluid shows up tells you the story. On the Marion job the rod had a distinct wet band and the housing above the wiper was clean, which is a textbook rod seal. We also checked the rod itself for scoring, because a scratched or pitted chrome rod will eat a brand-new seal in weeks. That is the decision point on every car lift automotive hydraulic repair: seal kit, or complete cylinder.
Seal kit versus complete cylinder replacement
A rebuild kit is the cheaper path and it is the right call when the barrel is clean inside, the rod is smooth and straight, and the gland threads are undamaged. Kits typically include the rod seal, wiper, piston seal, backup rings and O-rings, and they are brand and model specific. The bore, stroke, rod diameter and gland style all have to match, which is why we ask for the serial number off the data plate rather than guessing from a photo. Generic “fits most” seal assortments are how shops end up doing the same job twice.
Replace the whole cylinder when the rod is scored or pitted, when the barrel has been dented, when the rod is bent even slightly, or honestly when the labor math says so. Pulling a cylinder out of a four-post runway or out of a two-post column is real work — you are draining, disconnecting, unpinning, and wrestling a heavy assembly in a tight space. Doing that twice because a rebuilt unit failed again is worse than buying new the first time. For an older lift where parts support is thin, a new cylinder also resets your clock and usually comes with a warranty. Doing the rebuild without hurting yourself
Hydraulic systems store energy and cylinders store fluid, and both will surprise you. Before anything comes apart, relieve pressure fully by lowering to the stops, then crack the fitting slowly with a rag over it and a drain pan under it. Wear eye protection — this is not optional, pinhole streams of hydraulic fluid under pressure are genuinely dangerous and can inject through skin. Never run a hand along a hose looking for a leak. Use cardboard.
Once the cylinder is out and on the bench, support it properly, then unthread the gland with the right tool instead of a punch and a hammer. Chewed-up gland flats are how a clean job becomes a parts order. Clean everything with lint-free rags, inspect the bore with a light, and check the rod with a straightedge and your fingertips — you will feel a score you cannot see. Install new seals with clean hands and plenty of fresh fluid, never dry, and never with a screwdriver that can nick the sealing edge. Torque the gland to spec. When you reinstall, bleed the system properly and cycle the unit empty several times, then at partial load, watching lock engagement on every column before you put a customer’s car on it. Then check for leaks again after a full day of use. A rushed reassembly on a car lift automotive hydraulic circuit will announce itself at the worst possible moment.
Why alignment bays are less forgiving than general service
A general repair bay tolerates a lift that is a hair out of plane. An alignment bay does not. Your alignment rack has to hold a level, repeatable reference plane, because camber, caster and toe are all measured relative to that plane. If one corner is settling — even slowly, even a fraction of an inch over the course of a job — the numbers you print for the customer are not the numbers on the vehicle. Then the car comes back with a pull, you chase a phantom problem, and you eat the labor.
That is why in an alignment bay we treat a weeping cylinder as urgent rather than a maintenance item to schedule next quarter. We also recommend checking level far more often than most shops do. Put a precision level across the runways and across the turnplate area monthly, and log it. If you see drift, look at the cylinder, look at the equalizer cables, and look at whether the anchors or the slab under one column have moved. Preventive habits that make seals last
Seals fail for predictable reasons. Contaminated fluid is the biggest one — grit in the reservoir acts like lapping compound on your rod seal and piston seal. Use the fluid the manufacturer specifies, keep the reservoir cap sealed, and change fluid on the interval in your manual instead of only topping off forever. A reservoir that has been topped off for fifteen years is full of moisture, metal fines and whatever blew into the shop.
Second reason: dirty rods. In a tire shop the rod picks up rubber dust, road salt in an Iowa winter, and brake dust, and the wiper drags all of it across the seal on every stroke. Wipe exposed rods down with a clean rag as part of your weekly walkaround. Third reason: side loading. Off-center loads and uneven arm placement put a bending moment on the rod that the seal was never designed to handle, and over years that shows up as a leak on one side only. Load your vehicles centered, use the right adapters, and stop letting anybody park a dually with two wheels on the runway edge. Do those three things and a cylinder in a car lift automotive system will typically go many years between rebuilds. Skip them and you will be buying seal kits on a schedule. When to call us instead
Plenty of shops rebuild their own cylinders and do it well.
