His shop had a fifteen-year-old lift from a company that no longer exists, a leaking power unit, and no source for the specific cartridge valve it needed. He’d been quoted a full replacement because nobody would sell him a forty-dollar part. That’s the story behind this guide. Brand history and parts availability aren’t marketing trivia — they are the single biggest driver of what a lift actually costs you across its life, and they’re what we look at first.

Why Brand History Predicts Your Next Fifteen Years

Automotive lifts are a mature product category, and the companies that make them fall into rough generations. Rotary Lift traces back to 1925 and the original hydraulic inground lift; the company has changed ownership but the product line and the part numbers have carried forward with real continuity. Challenger has been building lifts in the Midwest since the late 1970s and has a similarly stable catalog. BendPak came up in the 1960s and built its business heavily on the home and light-commercial side. Atlas is a newer distribution-led brand that fills the value tier. Each of those has a supply chain we can call.

Then there’s the other category: brands that appeared for a decade, sold on price through catalog dealers, and vanished. Their lifts are often mechanically fine — a column is a column — but the proprietary bits are orphaned. Carriage slide blocks, restraint gears, and cartridge valves get spec’d to a mold nobody owns anymore. That’s exactly where the Marion foreman was stuck. When we evaluate any car lift automotive purchase for a shop, we weight brand longevity heavily, because a lift is a twenty-year asset and the parts question always arrives eventually. What a Body Shop Actually Needs From a Lift

Body shops use lifts differently than mechanical shops do, and the spec should reflect that. Mechanical work is mostly access from below — exhaust, suspension, driveline. Collision work is a lot of standing beside the vehicle at mid height, pulling panels, sanding, blending, and setting the car down and raising it again a dozen times a day. That means cycle count matters more than absolute capacity, and mid-height stability matters more than maximum rise.

It also means a body shop often wants more than one style. A two-post handles the frame and suspension work and gives full undercarriage access. A four-post with a rolling jack is better for a car that lives in the shop for two weeks during a rebuild, because you can drive it on, leave it, and still walk around it without arms in the way. We had a lead come through recently for a Challenger four-post that needed rolling jack service and lift adjustment — a very typical body shop maintenance item, because the rolling jack takes abuse and the four-post cables stretch and need equalizing. A mid-rise scissor is the third option, and it earns its keep for door, rocker, and quarter-panel work where you want the car eighteen to forty inches up and nothing in your way. Any car lift automotive plan for a collision shop should account for at least two of those three.

Tire Rotation and Wheel Work: Where the Configuration Gets Decided

Even a dedicated body shop does tire and wheel work — alignment-adjacent jobs, wheels off for panel access, brake service on the repair estimate. How you plan to do that wheel work drives the configuration more than almost anything else. On a two-post it’s trivial: the wheels hang free the moment the car leaves the ground. On a four-post it is not trivial at all, because the tires are sitting on the runways. That’s what a rolling jack is for.

A rolling bridge jack sits in the channel between the four-post runways, rolls fore and aft, and lifts the vehicle by its frame or pinch welds so the wheels come off the ramps. Get a good one — air-hydraulic, with a proper saddle set and enough travel to clear a tall truck tire. The cheap ones bind in the channel and leak. If your shop rotates tires daily, we’d honestly point you toward a two-post as the primary and treat the four-post as storage and long-stay capacity. If wheels come off occasionally, a four-post with a quality rolling jack covers it. Runway spacing matters too: a narrow-runway four-post makes it awkward to get a jack stand or a wheel dolly into position. The Parts Pipeline: What We Actually Stock and Why

Here’s the unglamorous reality of running lifts in a production shop. The parts that fail are predictable and they’re all wear items. Equalization cables stretch and eventually fray at the sheave. Hydraulic cylinder seals weep after a few thousand cycles. Safety cam springs break. Arm restraint gears round off. Slide blocks and column liners wear thin and let the carriage rock. Power unit motors burn out, usually because of low fluid or a bad start capacitor. Contactors weld shut. None of that is exotic and none of it should take three weeks to source.

We stock those items for the major lines and we keep cross-reference data so a serial number gets you the right cable length instead of a close guess. Cable length in particular is unforgiving — a two-inch error means you can’t get the carriages level, and a lift that won’t level won’t lock evenly. When a shop calls us with a down lift, the goal is same-day or next-day, because a bay that isn’t lifting is losing money every hour. For older equipment, we can often adapt: a generic power unit with the right pressure rating and port configuration, a rebuilt cylinder, a universal cam spring. What we can’t fix is a proprietary casting from a defunct brand. That’s the whole argument for buying into a car lift automotive brand with a living catalog behind it.

Capacity, Certification, and the Numbers That Matter

Capacity is straightforward but frequently misjudged. A 9,000 lb lift will handle any passenger car and most crossovers with room to spare. A 10,000 lb unit covers half-ton pickups comfortably. Three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks push you to 12,000 or 15,000. And for a body shop, remember that a wrecked vehicle can be heavier than a clean one when it comes in with water, fluid, and debris, or lighter and badly unbalanced when it comes in half-disassembled. Both cases argue for margin.

The other number to look for is ALI certification. The Automotive Lift Institute runs a third-party certification program under ANSI standards, and a gold ALI label on the column means the model was independently tested for structural capacity, safety-lock function, and manufacturing consistency. It also matters for insurance and, in some jurisdictions, inspection. Not every lift on the market carries it. We’d argue that for a commercial shop, ALI certification isn’t optional — the liability exposure on an uncertified lift dropping a customer’s car isn’t a risk worth taking to save a few hundred dollars. Rotary and Challenger commercial models carry it across the line. When you’re evaluating a car lift automotive quote, ask for the certification and the capacity in writing, and confirm the capacity is the total, not per-arm. That distinction has burned buyers before.

Installation, Electrical, and the Costs That Show Up Later

The equipment price is maybe sixty to seventy percent of what you’ll spend to get a lift working in a body shop. Freight comes in on a semi and someone has to unload a two-thousand-pound crate. Installation means laying out for column spacing and drive-through clearance, drilling and setting anchors to spec torque, shimming columns plumb, plumbing and bleeding hydraulics, tensioning cables, and running a full load test. Electrical means a dedicated 220V single-phase circuit at the right amperage, or three-phase if that’s what the power unit wants.

Then there’s the slab. Iowa shop floors range from six inches of good rebar-reinforced concrete to a four-inch pour over gravel that’s cracked in three places. Manufacturer minimums are typically 4 to 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a standard 10,000 lb two-post, and we core test whenever there’s doubt. Cutting and pouring footing pads adds cost and a curing delay, but it’s not optional if the slab fails. The Marion shop we mentioned at the top ended up replacing the orphaned lift entirely with a Challenger unit, and the footing work was the schedule driver, not the equipment lead time. Budget for it. A car lift automotive project that gets planned around the concrete instead of discovering it on install day finishes on time and under the number you told the owner.

How We’d Buy It If It Were Our Shop

If we were outfitting a two-to-four bay collision shop in eastern Iowa tomorrow, here’s the plan. One 10,000 lb asymmetric two-post from Rotary or Challenger as the workhorse, clearfloor if the ceiling allows. One four-post with a quality rolling jack for long-stay vehicles and storage. A mid-rise scissor if there’s floor space, because rocker and quarter work is easier at forty inches than at six feet. All of it ALI certified. All of it from a brand whose parts we can order on a Tuesday and install on a Wednesday.

Then a maintenance habit: monthly visual on cables and cam engagement, quarterly fluid check, annual professional inspection with cable re-tensioning. That routine costs a few hundred dollars a year and it’s the difference between a lift that runs twenty years and one that surprises you at year eight.
