Start With the Concrete, Not the Catalog
Every install we’ve ever had to postpone was postponed because of concrete. A two-post lift concentrates the entire weight of the vehicle plus the machine into eight anchor bolts, and those bolts need something to bite into. The general requirement for most commercial two-post equipment is four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum, and many manufacturers want more than that for higher-capacity columns. Farm shops are the hardest to predict. We’ve cored slabs near Waterloo that turned out to be a beautiful six inches of reinforced pour, and we’ve cored slabs in newer-looking buildings that were three and a half inches over loose fill with no rebar anywhere.
You can check this yourself before you spend a dollar. Drill a small test hole in the area where you’d want the columns, measure the depth with a piece of welding rod, and note whether you hit anything solid or whether the bit drops through into gravel. Also look for control joints and cracks — anchors need to sit a minimum distance from any edge or seam, usually six inches or more depending on the anchor. If the slab is thin, that isn’t the end of the project. Cutting and pouring two footing pads is a normal part of getting a car lift automotive setup into an older building, and it’s cheaper than discovering the problem the day the truck arrives.
Ceiling Height and What Brake Work Actually Needs
Brake service is forgiving on height compared to transmission or exhaust work, but only if you plan for it. You want the rotor at a comfortable working level, which for most people means the tire hub landing somewhere between chest and shoulder height. That’s roughly 48 to 60 inches of rise for typical passenger cars and light trucks. The problem is that lifts don’t stop where you want them to — they stop where their travel ends, and a clearfloor two-post with an overhead beam needs enough height for the tallest vehicle you’ll put on it plus the beam itself.
In a pole barn, measure to the bottom of the trusses, not to the peak, and then measure again where the columns will actually stand. Purlins, lights, and unit heaters eat clearance fast. A standard clearfloor two-post generally wants twelve feet or more. If you’ve got a ten-foot sidewall, that’s when we start talking about a baseplate model with the hydraulic hose and cables running through the floor plate instead of overhead. Plenty of farm shops in the Cedar Valley run baseplate columns and never miss the overhead. The tradeoff is a bar across the drive-through, which matters more if you’re rolling a floor jack or a parts cart around constantly. It’s a real decision and it should be made with a tape measure in hand, not after the crate is unloaded.
Power, Air, and the Boring Utilities Nobody Budgets For
The power unit is the piece people forget until installation day. Most commercial two-post lifts ship with a 220V single-phase motor, and that means a dedicated circuit — typically a 30-amp breaker with the right wire gauge for the run length. Farm shops often have 220V available for a welder or a compressor, but that outlet is frequently on the wrong wall, forty feet from where the lift will stand. Voltage drop over a long run is real, and an undersized conductor will make a motor run hot and die early. If your building has three-phase service, tell us up front, because a three-phase power unit is usually a better long-term buy and the motor is available from the factory that way.
Air matters too. Nearly every modern two-post uses a pneumatic lock release, meaning you need shop air routed to the column. It’s a small line and low pressure, but it has to be there or you’re manually releasing locks with a pull cable every time you lower. While you’re planning conduit and air lines, think about where you want the impact hose to land, because brake work means the gun follows you around all four corners. We route utilities during install when a customer asks, and doing it while the columns are still being set is far cleaner than adding drops later. Symmetric, Asymmetric, and Which One Fits a Mixed Fleet
A farm shop rarely works on one type of vehicle. You’ve got a three-quarter-ton pickup, a couple of family cars, maybe a service van and an SUV that the neighbor drops off. That mix drives the arm configuration decision. Symmetric two-post lifts place the vehicle centered between the columns with equal-length arms, which handles heavy trucks well and distributes load evenly. Asymmetric designs rotate the columns and use shorter front arms, setting the vehicle back so the driver’s door clears the column.
For brake and rotor work specifically, we usually steer people toward an asymmetric or a versymmetric arrangement. You’re in and out of the cab constantly — releasing the parking brake, pumping the pedal to bleed, checking the dash. Fighting a door against a column fifteen times a day gets old, and it puts dings in customer vehicles if you’re doing side work. That said, if the bulk of your work is heavy trucks and duallies, symmetric arms give you better spotting flexibility on a long wheelbase. Capacity is the other half of the equation. A 10,000 lb column is plenty for anything with four tires and a light-duty rating. If you’re regularly under a loaded one-ton or a service body, step up to 12,000 or 15,000. The price gap between capacities is smaller than most people expect, and nobody has ever called us to complain that their lift was too strong.
Layout: Bay Spacing, Doors, and Where the Truck Actually Fits
Drawing the bay on paper saves grief. Two-post columns typically sit around eleven to twelve feet apart on center, and you need working room on both sides — three feet minimum to walk and swing a wheel off, more if you want a tool cart there. Add the length of the vehicle plus room to open the hood and stand behind the tailgate, and a single brake bay wants roughly twenty-four by fourteen feet of clear floor at a bare minimum. Most people underestimate the depth.
Then think about the door. If your overhead door is in line with the lift, the raised vehicle has to clear the open door track, and in a lot of pole buildings the track runs right through the space you wanted. We’ve moved planned lift locations six feet sideways more than once for exactly this reason. Also consider drainage and floor slope — a slab that pitches toward a drain will put your columns out of plumb, and shimming plumb is normal but there’s a limit to how much you can correct before the anchors are loaded wrong. Finally, look up at your lighting. Nothing makes brake work miserable like standing in your own shadow. A pair of LED shop fixtures mounted outboard of the lift, not directly overhead, throws light under the vehicle where you need it. These details cost almost nothing at planning stage and are expensive to fix afterward.
Choosing Your Car Lift Automotive Package Without Overbuying
There’s a real temptation to buy the biggest thing you can afford. We’d rather you buy the right thing and keep money in the tool budget. For a rural shop doing brakes, suspension, and general maintenance on cars and light trucks, a quality 10,000 or 12,000 lb two-post from Rotary or Challenger will outlive the building. Those are the commercial brands we stock parts for and service, which matters more than the sticker on day one — a lift you can’t get a cable or a cylinder for in five years is a bad investment no matter what it cost.
If you also store vehicles or want to do alignments someday, a four-post with a rolling jack is a different tool that solves different problems. Some shops end up with one of each. If your primary need is brakes and tires and you’re tight on ceiling, a mid-rise scissor is worth a look, though it blocks access to the rocker area and that limits what else you can do. Whatever direction you go, buy from someone who will answer the phone in year three. The Site Survey: What We Look At Before You Order
When we do a site survey, it takes under an hour and it removes almost all the risk from the project. We measure slab thickness where the anchors will land, check for rebar and post-tension cable, verify ceiling clearance at the column locations rather than at the peak, look at your electrical panel and available circuits, confirm the air supply, and walk the path the delivery truck and our equipment will take to get into the building. That last one matters more than people think — we’ve had to hand-carry columns a hundred feet because the only door was a walk-through.
We also ask what you’re going to do with it in five years. A shop that plans to hire a second tech and add a bay should place the first lift so the second one fits. A homeowner-scale operation that might eventually sell the building should think about whether the equipment stays or goes. All of that shapes the recommendation.
