Picking a car lift automotive setup for a shop that lives on brake service is a different decision than picking one for general repair, and a restoration shop owner in the Des Moines metro proved that to us the hard way. He bought a mid-rise scissor because it fit his floor plan and his budget, then spent two years discovering that rotor swaps on a lift with a deck under the car are miserable work. He called us wanting to sell it. That conversation turned into a longer one about what he should have bought, what he could recover on the trade, and how much the brand badge on the column actually affects resale in Iowa. Step one: is brake work the majority of your revenue?

Everything downstream depends on this. If wheels-off work — brakes, rotors, hubs, wheel bearings, suspension — makes up more than half of what rolls through the bay, the answer is a two-post, full stop. Nothing else gives a tech clean, unobstructed access to all four corners at a comfortable working height. A rotor swap on a two-post is a smooth sequence: arms under the pinch welds, up to chest height, wheels off, caliper bracket off, rotor off. No reaching around a runway, no rolling jack to position, no crouching.

If brake work is a meaningful chunk but you also do a lot of alignments, exhaust, or fluid service, the calculus changes. Four-posts with a rolling jack handle brakes acceptably — we get service calls on Challenger four-post rolling jacks specifically because shops do use them that way — but “acceptably” costs you minutes on every job. Multiply four extra minutes by six brake jobs a day by 250 days and you have lost most of a work week per bay per year. That is the real cost of the wrong configuration, and it never shows up on the invoice. When we scope a car lift automotive purchase, the first question is always what the tech actually does with it most days, not what the shop might theoretically want to do someday.

Step two: pick your budget tier honestly

There are three practical tiers in the two-post market and they are not subtle differences. The entry tier is import-built, thin-gauge steel, basic single-point lock release, and a warranty that means whatever the importer decides it means. These lifts work. Plenty of one-bay shops and serious home users run them for years. They are the right answer when capital is genuinely tight.

The middle tier is where BendPak and Atlas live — better steel, better hydraulics, real parts availability, and dealer support that answers the phone. This is the sweet spot for a restoration shop or a two-to-three bay independent that wants reliability without commercial-fleet pricing. The top tier is Rotary and Challenger: heavier construction, ALI Gold certification across the line, the longest service life, and the deepest parts pipeline in the country. We can get a Rotary SPO12 part to a Des Moines shop faster than most people can get a generic cylinder shipped from a warehouse in another state. Yes, the top tier costs more up front. The gap on a 10,000 lb two-post between mid and top tier is real but it is not double, and the spread narrows every year you own it. Step three: match capacity and configuration to your vehicle mix

Ten thousand pounds covers cars, crossovers, and half-ton pickups with room to spare. Twelve thousand covers three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks, vans, and the heavier EVs that keep showing up. If you see a lot of dually pickups or you are in an area with a heavy truck population — and the Des Moines metro absolutely is — twelve is the safer buy. The price difference is smaller than most people assume and it eliminates the day you have to turn a customer away.

Configuration matters as much as capacity. Asymmetric two-posts rotate the columns and use uneven arms so the vehicle sits back and the doors clear the columns. That is what you want in a car-heavy shop where techs get in and out constantly. Symmetric setups center the vehicle and handle trucks better but make door clearance tight on sedans. Baseplate versus overhead is the other fork: overhead needs about twelve feet of ceiling and keeps the floor completely clear, while baseplate works under a low ceiling but puts a bar across the bay floor that you will kick every day. Step four: check the slab before you check the price

We have had to tell more than one Des Moines metro shop owner that the lift they already bought cannot legally go in their building. Most two-posts require a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many 12,000 lb models want more. Older buildings around the metro — and there are a lot of them — frequently have three-and-a-half inch slabs, or four inches over questionable fill, or a nice thick pour in one half of the building and something else entirely in the other.

Testing is cheap. Core sample or a hammer drill through in the intended anchor location tells you the depth in ten minutes. If the slab does not make spec, the fix is a cutout and a proper footing pour — usually a few feet square and eight to twelve inches deep, cured before installation. It adds cost and about a week to the timeline, but it is the difference between a lift that stands for twenty years and one that starts pulling anchors in year three. We have pulled lifts out of buildings where somebody skipped this step and the column base had visibly tilted. That is not a repair, that is a demolition. Any car lift automotive quote we write includes a slab conversation, and if you are shopping elsewhere and nobody has asked about your concrete, that tells you something about the installer.

Step five: think about resale before you buy

Here is the part most buyers skip entirely, and it is the reason the restoration shop owner called us. Automotive lifts hold value unevenly. A well-maintained Rotary or Challenger two-post with documentation and a current ALI inspection sticker moves fast on the used market in Iowa and typically recovers a meaningful share of its original cost even after a decade. An unbranded import two-post with no serial plate and no parts support is close to worthless — buyers know they cannot get cylinders or cables for it, and installers do not want to touch it.

The pattern holds across categories. Four-posts hold value well because home-garage buyers want them for storage and there is a deep market. Mid-rise scissors are the weakest resale in the category, which is exactly what the restoration shop discovered. Specialty configurations — inground, mobile columns, anything requiring a specific building — have thin markets and slow sales. What actually preserves value is boring: keep the manual, keep the serial plate readable, keep inspection records, replace cables and seals on schedule, and do not let the columns get beat up. What the restoration shop actually did

He kept the scissor. That surprised him more than it surprised us. Once we walked through the numbers, the resale on a mid-rise was low enough that selling it made no financial sense, and there was real work it did well — bodywork, wheel and tire, quick underbody inspections on the low classic cars he restores, which do not clear a two-post arm set easily anyway. So it stayed in the back bay as a dedicated station.

What he bought was a 12,000 lb asymmetric overhead two-post for the front bay, where the brake and general service work happens. His slab tested at four and a half inches of good concrete, so no cutout was needed and we installed in a single day. Six months later his brake throughput was up noticeably and the scissor was getting used more, not less, because it was no longer the only option for everything. That is the outcome we want from a car lift automotive consultation — not selling the biggest thing in the catalog, but sorting out which machine belongs in which bay.
