Why Alignment Bays Are a Different Animal
General service equipment has one job: get the vehicle in the air safely and hold it there. An alignment platform has a second job that’s much harder — it has to hold the vehicle in a geometrically consistent plane so the aligner’s measurements mean something. Runway-to-runway flatness on a purpose-built alignment four-post is typically held within about 1/8 inch across the measurement zone, and the manufacturer designs the runways, crossmembers, and lock geometry around that spec.
That’s why the used-versus-new question is sharper here than in a general service bay. The Real Dimensions That Decide It
Here’s what we measured in that West Des Moines bay. Clear ceiling height under the sprinkler heads: 13 feet 2 inches. Bay width between the column line and the adjacent hoist: 15 feet 8 inches. Slab: eight inches of reinforced concrete poured in 2004, verified with a core sample and confirmed by the original building plans the dealership still had on file. That’s an ideal foundation and it opened up every option.
The vehicle mix drove capacity. The store sells half-ton and three-quarter-ton trucks alongside a growing volume of full-size electric SUVs, and a loaded three-quarter-ton crew cab pushes 8,000 lb before you add a topper and a toolbox. Electric vehicles are the sleeper problem — battery packs put curb weights on midsize crossovers where full-size trucks used to sit. We spec’d 14,000 lb capacity with 197-inch runways rather than the 12,000 lb the used unit offered. Wheelbase math matters: a crew-cab long-bed runs about 160 inches between axles, and you need approach and departure runway beyond that for turnplates at the front and slip plates at the rear. The used unit had 172-inch runways and front pockets sized for an older turnplate standard. On paper it fit; in practice the longest trucks in the store’s inventory would have straddled the pocket edges. That single dimension is what killed the used option for this particular car lift automotive purchase.
How to Inspect a Used Unit Properly
We still inspected the used four-post thoroughly, because plenty of used equipment is a genuinely good buy and we’ve helped shops install used units happily. Our checklist runs about twenty items. Serial plate and manufacture date first — if the data plate is gone or painted over, walk away, because you can’t source correct parts or verify the ALI certification history. Then cables: look at the sheave grooves, not just the cable itself, because worn sheaves chew new cables in a year.
Next, lock ladders on all four columns. Wear on the lock dogs and elongated lock holes tell you how the unit was operated and whether it was ever left parked on a partially engaged lock. Cylinder rod condition, hose fittings, and the power unit reservoir — cloudy or milky fluid means water intrusion and a rebuild in your near future. Then the structural check: set a six-foot straightedge across the runways at three points and look for daylight. On the used unit we looked at, we found about 3/16 inch of deflection mid-runway and lock hole wear consistent with hard commercial use. For a general service bay that’s an acceptable purchase at the right price. For alignment, it wasn’t. The Total Cost Math Nobody Runs
The used unit’s asking price was roughly 40 percent of a comparable new Rotary or Challenger alignment platform. That looks decisive until you add the rest of the column. Removal and transport from the closing shop: real money, because a four-post doesn’t come apart in an hour. New cables as a matter of course on any used purchase — you don’t inherit somebody else’s cable life. Fresh hydraulic fluid, likely a cylinder reseal, replacement lock dogs, and a rolling jack that was compatible in theory but needed new pads and adapters.
Add those and the used unit landed around 70 percent of new. Then subtract the warranty, subtract parts availability certainty on a discontinued model, and subtract the flatness spec that alignment work actually requires. The math stopped being close. We told the service manager that plainly, and we’ve told other customers the opposite when the numbers went the other way — a low-hour used two-post for a general service bay can be an excellent value. The point is to run the full column instead of comparing sticker to sticker. New Equipment: What the Dealership Actually Bought
The store went with a new 14,000 lb four-post alignment platform, 197-inch runways, integrated front turnplate pockets, rear slip plates, and a pair of rolling jacks rated to lift either axle wheels-free. Install took three days including electrical and aligner recalibration, and we coordinated with the store’s aligner vendor so the equipment and the measuring system got commissioned together rather than in sequence with a two-week gap.
The specification details that mattered most weren’t the headline numbers. Air-actuated locks on all four columns meant the tech could set the platform at a repeatable working height every time instead of eyeballing it. The rolling jacks were spec’d with the correct pad height for the store’s EV models, which sit low and use specific frame lift points — get that wrong and you’re either not reaching the point or you’re loading a rocker panel. We also spec’d extended approach ramps because the bay’s entry geometry meant vehicles came in at a slight angle, and short ramps plus an angled approach equals scraped air dams on lowered sedans. None of that shows up in a price comparison, and all of it shows up in daily throughput. That’s the part of a car lift automotive purchase we spend the most time on with dealership customers.
When Used Is the Right Call
We don’t want to leave the impression that used is always wrong, because it isn’t. We’ve installed plenty of secondhand equipment for shops across central Iowa and been glad to do it. The conditions that make used work: the unit is from a current or recently discontinued model line with parts still stocked, the data plate is intact and legible, the columns and runways show no structural deformation, and the intended use is general service rather than alignment or anything requiring measurement repeatability.
