That number is deceptive because it does not include arm swing, pad set, and the safety-lock engagement at the top. Real cycle time from bay entry to lift-fully-set-and-locked is closer to two to three minutes on a well-maintained lift and a well-trained tech. Multiply that by 40 lifts a day, five days a week, and any extra 30 seconds per cycle costs the shop real labor hours by the end of the year.

Freight logistics: LTL, curbside, and the forklift you need to have
Now the part every dealership manager underestimates. A commercial two-post ships LTL, meaning it rides on a truck with other freight. The columns and arms come strapped to a pallet, and the pallet weighs anywhere from 1,800 to 2,400 pounds. The freight terms are almost always curbside delivery, meaning the driver stops at your curb, lowers the lift-gate if the truck has one, and expects you to unload. A dealership forklift or Skytrak handles this in five minutes. A dealership with no forklift has a problem.
The three options are: rent a forklift for the delivery day, pay for a lift-gate truck upgrade at freight time, or have us bring our own forklift as part of a turnkey install. Whichever way you go, decide before you order. Freight companies in Iowa are strict about wait time — if you make the driver wait for a forklift to arrive, you pay hourly detention. Unloading dimensions and dock reality
The pallet a two-post ships on is roughly 8 feet long and 3 to 4 feet wide, and the columns extend a foot or two past the pallet on either end. Measure the drive path before delivery.
The other detail is dock reality. Most dealerships have a shipping-receiving area at the parts department, not the service bay. If the freight truck goes to parts, you now need to move a 2,000 lb pallet across the property to the bay. That is possible with a decent-sized forklift, but a warehouse forklift with limited outdoor tires is going to struggle across a rough parking lot. We tell dealership service managers to specify delivery to the service bay itself, not to shipping-receiving, and to confirm the dispatcher understands. Ninety percent of the time this works. Ten percent of the time the driver goes to parts anyway, and now you are moving a lift across the property. Plan for that.
