An EV specialty shop in Sioux City called us last winter about a car lift automotive install after burning through two consultants who each gave conflicting advice. One said EVs required a specialty lift because of battery weight. The other said any two-post on the market would work fine. Both were wrong in different ways, and both were wasting our customer’s time and money. We drove up on a snowy Tuesday, walked the space, ran the numbers, and had a working install spec by end of day. Six months in, the lift is running clean and doing exactly what he needed — including the occasional oil pan gasket job on legacy hybrid customers he still services. Myth: EVs Need a Specialty Car Lift Automotive Setup

The first consultant had told him he needed a premium EV-specific lift with reinforced pads and a special battery-drop attachment package. That is marketing dressed up as engineering. A modern passenger EV weighs somewhere between 3,800 and 5,200 pounds curb weight, depending on model and trim. A 10,000-pound-capacity two-post lift handles those weights with almost 50 percent margin available. The heavier EVs — full-size electric pickups and large electric SUVs — get into 6,500 to 9,000 pounds curb, and a 12,000 or 15,000-pound capacity lift is what you want. None of that is exotic. Every mainstream lift brand — Rotary, Challenger, BendPak — makes a lift in that capacity range.

What EVs actually need is careful pick-point placement because the battery pack lives under the floor and you cannot pinch it. But every modern EV manufacturer publishes a service manual with clearly marked lift points. Adapter pads for those points are cheap and available from most parts distributors. Our Sioux City customer’s car lift automotive setup did not need anything special — it needed the standard tall-column two-post we would have recommended for a general repair shop of any kind. The consultant had been quoting a premium for nothing more than a paint color and a marketing sticker on the column.

Myth: Any Two-Post Will Handle Every Modern EV

The second consultant went the other direction — told him any lift on the market would work fine. That is also wrong. A full-size electric sedan can weigh close to 5,000 pounds and stretch nearly 200 inches long. On an asymmetric two-post with short front arms, the balance point is forward enough that a rushed setup can put too much weight ahead of the columns. On a symmetric two-post with even arms, it works cleanly. But you need to make sure the arm restraint locks are set correctly because the battery-pack sub-frame sometimes tempts a tech to grab the wrong point along the rocker.

Then there is the electric pickup category. A modern electric full-size truck can weigh close to 7,000 pounds with unusual body geometry and pick points that do not map to a standard sedan template. A 12,000-pound lift with wide adjustable pads is the minimum spec. Our Sioux City EV shop had one of those trucks in the service pipeline when they called us, and that was the vehicle that set the capacity floor for the whole build. Every car lift automotive purchase should be built around the worst-case vehicle in your regular mix, not the average one that comes in every Tuesday. The average vehicle is easy. The worst-case vehicle is what puts a wrong lift on the shop floor.

What the Site Survey Actually Turned Up

We drove to Sioux City with a laser measure, a slab thickness gauge, a rebar detector, and a set of photos to reference against the manufacturer’s install manual. The shop was in a converted machine shop from the 1970s — 18-inch tall column footings poured for old lathes, a slab that measured between 5 and 7 inches thick depending on where we sampled, and rebar on a 12-inch grid throughout. Ceiling height was 14 feet clear at the peak, dropping to 12 feet 6 inches at the wall line. Good bones for a lift install.

What we found that was not ideal was drainage. The floor sloped a small fraction of an inch across the intended lift footprint toward a floor drain in the corner. That is fine for a wash bay but bad for a lift because the columns need to be plumb and the runways need to be level. We shimmed one column base with a factory shim kit, verified plumb with a laser, and set the anchors. Total extra time was maybe 45 minutes. Any consultant who had quoted the job without walking the floor would have missed that entirely. A good car lift automotive site survey catches this stuff before the freight ships, not after.

Battery Weight and Pick Point Reality

The most-repeated worry we hear from EV shops is battery weight — customers assume the battery pack somehow makes the whole vehicle behave differently on a lift than a comparable gas vehicle. It does not, really. A curb weight is a curb weight to a hydraulic cylinder. What matters is where the weight is distributed across the wheelbase. On most EVs, the pack is a large flat rectangle in the middle of the vehicle, which actually gives you a more predictable weight distribution than most ICE vehicles have. Front-to-rear balance on a typical mid-size EV sedan is close to 50/50 out of the factory.

The real issue is pick point discipline. Every EV manufacturer specifies exactly where the arm pads should contact the underbody. Miss by two inches and you can dent the battery pack tray, and that repair is not cheap. Our Sioux City shop bought a set of adapter pads — one for each major EV platform they serviced — and stored them on a rack next to the lift for easy access. That modest investment prevents thousands of dollars of paint or pack damage in the long run. Legacy Oil Pan Gasket Work on the Same Lift

Six months in, our EV shop still had ICE customers on their books — pre-EV customers who kept coming back for the occasional oil change or oil pan gasket repair on a legacy sedan. They did not turn that work away because it kept the relationship alive for the eventual EV upgrade down the road. The same lift that handles an electric pickup also handles a gas sedan with a leaking oil pan gasket. The tech does not care what vehicle is on it. The lift raises and lowers exactly the same way for every vehicle. That interchangeability is the underrated feature of a general-purpose car lift automotive install.

The owner told us the split was roughly 85 percent EV service and 15 percent legacy ICE work in the first six months, and the ICE fraction was slowly declining as customers migrated to newer vehicles. He did not need a dedicated ICE bay and did not want one — the flexibility of a single lift doing both was exactly right for his transition-period business model. If you are an EV-first shop wondering whether you can keep servicing legacy customers, the honest answer is yes, as long as your lift is a mainstream two-post with adjustable arms and a decent pad set.

Ceiling Height, Bay Width, and Sioux City Building Code Reality

Sioux City has a specific building code interpretation about lift installation permitting that not every installer knows. A commercial garage adding a lift to an existing bay usually needs a mechanical permit and sometimes a structural review of the slab. Our EV customer’s building had been permitted for commercial repair use in the 1970s, so the change-of-use question did not apply this time. But the slab inspection did.

The inspector wanted to see a core sample confirming compressive strength and a rebar map showing anchor placement locations. We provided both without any pushback. Approval came back in eight business days from submission. If a customer tries to skip the permit process, the insurance carrier will find out later and can void coverage on any accident involving the lift. That is not a place to cut corners. The single most useful thing an EV shop can do before the lift arrives is print the service manual pick-point diagrams for every major EV brand you will see and post them on the wall next to the lift. Not on a tablet, not in a folder — on the wall, where the tech looks up while positioning the arm pads under the vehicle. That one habit prevents almost every pick-point mistake we have ever seen on a shop floor.

The second most useful thing is to buy a set of universal-fit tall adapter pads. The stock rubber saddle that comes with most lifts is fine for sedans and pickup trucks, but EVs often have a lower ground clearance and need a taller pad to make contact without the arm hitting the rocker. That is a modest accessory purchase that saves a lot of shop time and paint work over the lifetime of the lift.
