An EV specialty shop that opened here in Ames a couple of years ago called us in the middle of a busy week because their main bay was down, and the owner was convinced the whole car lift automotive package was shot. There was hydraulic fluid on the floor, the carriage wouldn’t hold at height overnight, and a competitor had quoted a full replacement. What it actually needed was a rod seal, a wiper, and about ninety minutes of our time. That call is the reason for this article. There is a remarkable amount of folklore floating around about hydraulic cylinders, seal kits, and leaks — and EV shops, which run heavy battery packs through their bays every day, get hit with the worst of it.

Myth One: A Leaking Cylinder Means a New Cylinder

This is the most expensive misunderstanding in the business, and we hear it weekly. A cylinder leaking at the rod is almost never a failed cylinder. It’s a failed rod seal, or a failed wiper letting grit past, or occasionally a scored rod. All three of those are serviceable. The tube itself — the part that’s actually expensive and actually hard to source — is a heavy steel honed cylinder that outlives everything inside it. We rebuild cylinders on units that are twenty and thirty years old and put them back into daily service.

The way to tell the difference is where the fluid shows up. Weeping at the gland nut where the rod exits is a rod seal or wiper. Fluid at the base fitting is usually the hose end or the port o-ring, not the cylinder at all. Fluid on the outside of the tube body with no visible source, or a cylinder that drifts down under load with no external leak, points to internal bypass past the piston seal — still a rebuild, still not a replacement. The only time we tell a shop to buy a new cylinder is when the rod is bent, the tube is pitted from years of sitting in standing water, or the chrome is gouged badly enough that new seals will shred in a month. On a car lift automotive setup in a clean indoor bay, that’s rare. Before you approve a replacement quote from anyone, ask them to identify the leak point specifically.

Myth Two: EVs Are Too Heavy for a Standard Lift

EV shop owners hear this constantly and it gets the emphasis wrong. Most passenger EVs land somewhere between 4,000 and 6,000 lb curb weight — heavier than a comparable sedan, but well inside the capacity of a 10,000 lb two-post. A loaded three-quarter-ton pickup has been rolling into those same bays for decades. Capacity is usually not the constraint. What actually matters is weight distribution and lift point access.

EVs carry their mass low and centered in the skateboard pack, which shifts the balance point compared to a front-engine vehicle and puts more load toward the rear arms than technicians expect. Lift points are also manufacturer-specific and often require pucks or adapters to keep pressure off the battery case. Getting the pick points right matters more for these vehicles than the number on the capacity plate. Where capacity genuinely comes into play is electric trucks and vans — those routinely exceed 9,000 lb, and we push shops toward 12,000 or 15,000 lb units for that work. What we don’t want is a shop replacing a perfectly good 10,000 lb car lift automotive installation because someone told them EVs demand it. Spend that money on proper adapters, a taller-reach arm set, and a rebuild of the hydraulics instead.

Myth Three: Drift Down Overnight Is Always the Cylinder

A lift that settles a few inches overnight sends most shop owners straight to the cylinder, and about half the time they’re wrong. The hydraulic circuit on a two-post has several places fluid can sneak back to the reservoir. The most common culprit we find is the lowering valve — a bit of debris under the seat holds the valve fractionally open, and the carriage bleeds down slowly. Flushing or replacing that valve is a fraction of the cost of a cylinder job.

Next on the list is the check valve in the power unit, then hose fittings, then the piston seal inside the cylinder. We diagnose it by isolating: raise the lift, close off the line at the cylinder port if the plumbing allows, and watch. If it holds with the line isolated and drifts with it open, the problem is upstream in the valve or power unit. If it drifts either way, it’s internal piston bypass and you need a seal kit. This is a fifteen-minute test that saves shops real money, and it’s the first thing we do on a drift call. We should also say plainly: drift is not the same as unsafe. Mechanical safety locks are what hold the load, and they should be engaged any time a technician is under a vehicle. If your locks aren’t catching reliably, that’s the emergency — not the drift. Myth Four: Any Seal Kit Off the Shelf Will Fit

We wish. Seal kits are matched to bore diameter, rod diameter, gland design, and the seal profile the manufacturer specified — and manufacturers change cylinder suppliers mid-production run without changing the model number. We have opened two cylinders from the same nominal model, three years apart, and found different gland threads and different wiper cross-sections. Buying a generic kit off a marketplace listing because the bore matches is how a rebuild turns into two rebuilds.

The right way is to work from the serial number and, when possible, the actual measured dimensions of the old seals. When shops call us for a kit, we ask for the lift model, the serial plate data, and a photo of the cylinder and the gland nut. If there’s any ambiguity, we tell them to pull the cylinder first, measure, and then order. It costs a day of downtime and saves a week. It also matters for what goes inside: nitrile is the default in most car lift automotive hydraulics and works fine with standard AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil, but if a previous owner ran a synthetic or ATF through the system, seal compatibility becomes a real question. Tell whoever supplies the kit what fluid is in the reservoir. And while the cylinder is apart, replace the wiper even if it looks fine — it’s the cheapest part in the kit and it’s what protects everything else.

Myth Five: Contamination Comes From Outside

Shop owners picture dirt getting sucked into the reservoir. In practice, most of the contamination we find in lift hydraulics was generated inside the system or introduced during service. Fine metal from normal wear, rubber particles from a degrading hose liner, and moisture condensing in a half-empty reservoir during Iowa temperature swings do more damage than shop dust ever will. Water is the sneaky one — a bay that goes from 40 degrees overnight to 68 by mid-morning breathes moist air in and out of the reservoir vent every single day, and that moisture ends up in the oil.

Milky or hazy fluid on the dipstick means water, and water means accelerated seal hardening and rust on the rod during idle periods. The fix is boring: change the fluid on a real schedule rather than waiting for a symptom, keep the reservoir topped so there’s less air volume to breathe, and wipe the rod down if the lift sits at height for long stretches. When we rebuild a cylinder we always flush the reservoir and change the fluid at the same time, because putting fresh seals into dirty oil is throwing money away. What a Real Rebuild Looks Like on Site

People imagine cylinder work as a shop-off, week-long affair. On most two-post and scissor units it isn’t. We arrive, lower and block the carriage mechanically, relieve pressure, cap the lines, and pull the cylinder. On the bench the gland nut comes off, the rod and piston assembly slides out, and we inspect the bore with a light. Old seals come off, grooves get cleaned, new seals go on with the right orientation — and orientation matters, because a rod seal installed backward will leak from day one. Reassemble, reinstall, bleed the air out by cycling the lift several times to full height with no load, and check the safety locks engage on every notch.

Start to finish, a straightforward single-cylinder rebuild is a half day, and the shop is usually back in that bay the same afternoon. Cost sits well under a fraction of a new installation, and on older equipment it’s the difference between keeping a proven unit and financing a new one.
