A farmer outside Marion called us in February about a 7,000 lb car lift automotive setup he’d bought used at an auction, and his question was simple: what’s it worth, and should I keep it or trade up? He does his own tire rotations on three pickups, a grain cart tractor’s service work, and enough wheel and brake jobs for neighbors that it’s basically a side business. That conversation turned into a two-hour walkthrough of what he actually needed versus what he’d bought. We do a lot of those calls with rural Iowa shops, and the pattern is consistent enough that we built a checklist. Here it is, in the order we’d work through it with you.

Step One: Write Down What You Actually Lift
Before capacity, before brand, before price — list every vehicle and piece of equipment you expect to put on the lift over the next ten years, with real weights. Not guesses. A crew-cab three-quarter-ton diesel with a flatbed and a full fuel transfer tank is not the 6,800 lb the door sticker suggests. We’ve weighed farm pickups at over 9,000 lb loaded, and the owner was genuinely surprised.
Then note the extremes. Longest wheelbase, widest track, lowest ground clearance, tallest overall height. On a farm, the tall one is usually a dually with a service body and a light bar, and it’s the reason ceiling height decides more purchases than capacity does. The Marion-area customer had a 7,000 lb rating on paper, which sounds like plenty until you realize his heaviest regular vehicle came within a few hundred pounds of it — and lift capacity is a maximum, not a target. Working inside 70 to 80 percent of rated capacity is the practical rule, which pushed him toward a 9,000 or 10,000 lb machine. Getting this list on paper is the single highest-value thing you can do before shopping a car lift automotive purchase, and it takes fifteen minutes.
Step Two: Measure the Building, Not the Lift
Farm shops are wonderfully varied and rarely square. Measure ceiling height at the lowest point in the bay — that’s usually a purlin, a light fixture, a sprinkler line, or the bottom of a truss, not the peak. Measure clear width between posts, columns, or door tracks. Measure the door opening height, because a lift that fits the bay is useless if the vehicle can’t get in.
Then look at the door track and overhead door itself. On a four-post, an overhead-mounted crossbar can conflict with a door in the open position; floor-routed hydraulic and cable runs solve some of that but need a plan. We’ve seen shops trench a shallow channel across the bay for hose and cable, and we’ve seen shops route overhead successfully — both work when they’re designed rather than improvised. Also check where you’ll stand. A drive-on four-post in a 24-foot-wide shop leaves room for a tool cart on one side and nothing on the other, which affects tire work more than people expect. Step Three: Check the Slab Honestly
Farm shop floors have a wide range of quality. Some are beautiful six-inch pours with rebar and a proper base, done right by a local crew who knew a tractor was going on them. Others are four-inch pours over dirt, or a topping slab poured over an old floor, or a slab with a heaving crack running exactly where you want a column.
Two-post lifts need the concrete to hold anchors under tension — typically four inches minimum of 3,000 PSI, and manufacturers spell out required distance from seams and edges. Four-post lifts are more forgiving because they’re primarily bearing down rather than pulling out, which is one reason we often steer farm shops toward a four-post when the slab is a question mark. Anchor pullout under a loaded vehicle is the failure mode nobody survives casually. And here’s the resale angle: a lift that was installed on proper concrete, plumb and torqued to spec, comes off the floor cleanly and sells well. One that’s been fighting a bad slab shows it in the columns and carriages, and buyers notice.
Step Four: Match the Design to Tire and Wheel Work
If tire rotation and wheel work is the bulk of what you do — and for most farm shops it is, alongside oil changes and brakes — the lift design matters more than the badge. A four-post gives you drive-on speed, which is great, but the wheels sit on the runways. You need a rolling jack to lift the wheels free, and that rolling jack has to be properly adjusted to the runway spacing or it’ll bind and frustrate you daily.
We take service calls on Challenger four-post rolling jacks regularly, and the issue is almost always adjustment rather than failure — jack rails set wrong, or the jack never leveled after the lift settled. A two-post, by contrast, leaves all four wheels hanging free the moment it comes up, which is why high-volume tire shops still favor them. A mid-rise scissor is a third option worth considering for a farm shop doing mostly wheels and brakes: lower cost, no ceiling requirement, and it drops flat out of the way. Step Five: Understand What Holds Resale Value
This is the part the Marion customer really wanted to know, and the answer surprised him. Brand matters, but not as much as parts availability and documentation. A twenty-year-old Rotary two-post with clean columns, original power unit, and a folder of inspection records will sell in a week in Iowa. An off-brand import from a company that no longer exists — even in decent shape — sits, because a buyer can’t get cables, lock pawls, or seal kits for it.
The specific value drivers we see: recognizable brand with a live parts channel, capacity in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb sweet spot (very high capacity narrows the buyer pool), documented service history, original manual and data plate legible, no column damage or gouging, and cables that don’t show broken strands. Condition of the concrete anchors matters too, because a buyer is going to reuse or replace them. Anything with a proprietary hydraulic component nobody stocks takes a real haircut. Buy with that in mind and the depreciation math gets a lot friendlier.
Step Six: Price the Whole Job, Not the Lift
Sticker price on the equipment is one line on a longer invoice. Freight to a rural address is real money, and it’s usually a curbside drop off a semi — meaning you need a tractor loader, skid steer, or forklift on site, and someone to help. Installation runs a range depending on whether the slab needs work, whether you need an electrician for a 208/230V single-phase or three-phase circuit, and whether the building needs any structural attention.
Then accessories. Adapter stacks and truck adapters for a two-post. Rolling jacks, drip trays, and jack tray extensions for a four-post. Anchor kits if they’re not included. A few shops forget the electrical entirely and discover their shop panel has no spare capacity, which turns into a service upgrade. Step Seven: Decide Between New, Used, and Refurbished
We sell new equipment and we service used equipment, so we have no dog in this fight beyond wanting you to end up with something that works. New buys you warranty, current safety standards, a fresh cable set, and no unknowns — worth a lot if this lift is going to carry your income. Used buys you capacity per dollar and gets a good machine back to work, which we like on principle.
The rules we’d give a farm shop buying used: insist on a brand with parts support, inspect the columns for gouging and the carriage slide blocks for wear, look at every inch of cable for broken strands and corrosion, cycle the locks in both columns and listen for even engagement, and check that the data plate is present and legible. Budget for a full cable set and a seal kit regardless of what the seller says, because those are wear items and you’ll be ahead. Have it professionally installed and inspected — an install is the right time to find problems. The auction lift the Marion farmer bought turned out to be sound; it needed cables, a lock cable adjustment, and proper anchors, and it’s been working fine since. That’s a good outcome.
