A heavy-duty truck shop owner about forty minutes north of Ames called us last spring with a question we hear more often than you’d think: what does a car lift automotive setup actually cost him over ten years, and what’s it worth when he sells it? He was running three-quarter-ton and one-ton service trucks through CV axle and half-shaft jobs on a pair of tired 9,000 lb two-posts, and the arms were maxed out on every diesel that rolled in. We put together a line-by-line breakdown for him — equipment, freight, concrete, install, inspection, and the resale side nobody quotes. This article is that breakdown, generalized. Why Heavy-Duty Work Breaks Light-Duty Lifts

The failure pattern we see in heavy-duty shops is almost never a catastrophic one. It’s slow. A 9,000 lb asymmetric two-post rated for passenger cars gets loaded with a crew-cab diesel that scales in at 8,400 lb dry, plus a service body, plus tools nobody unloaded. It lifts. It lifts every day for three years. Then the arm restraint gears round off, the equalizer cables stretch past adjustment range, and the carriage slides start chattering because the bearing blocks have been carrying an off-center load their whole life.

CV axle and half-shaft replacement makes it worse, not better. You’re working under the vehicle with a pry bar, hammering on a hub, sometimes pulling a knuckle. That’s lateral load on arms that were engineered for vertical load. On an undersized unit the arm sockets develop play, and once there’s play in a swing arm the restraint pin doesn’t seat cleanly and your ANSI/ALI annual inspection turns into a repair list. We’ve red-tagged more than one lift in a central Iowa truck shop for exactly this. The fix is capacity headroom — a 12,000 or 15,000 lb unit doing 9,000 lb work lasts two to three times as long as a 9,000 lb unit doing 9,000 lb work. That’s the first and most expensive lesson in car lift automotive purchasing, and it’s cheaper to learn it from an article than from a failed inspection.

Line One: What the Equipment Itself Costs

Pricing moves, so we deal in tiers rather than exact figures. A quality 10,000 lb clearfloor two-post from Rotary or Challenger sits in the low-to-mid four figures. Step up to a 12,000 lb unit and you’re adding roughly fifteen to twenty-five percent. A true heavy-duty 18,000 lb two-post, or a PKS-style four-post package for service trucks, moves into the five-figure range before anything else is added. Mobile column sets for buses and box trucks are their own tier entirely.

What surprises buyers is how little the price gap is between adjacent capacities compared to the lifespan gap. Going from 10,000 to 12,000 lb is often a difference of a few hundred to a thousand dollars on the invoice — and it’s the single best money you’ll spend. For a shop doing half-shaft and axle work on three-quarter-ton trucks, we almost always steer toward 12,000 lb minimum with tall columns. The other cost buyers forget is the option list: extended arms, drop-in adapters, truck adapters, stackable pads for lifted pickups. Budget several hundred dollars there. Adapters are not optional in a truck shop, and buying the cheap universal ones twice costs more than buying the OEM set once. Line Two: Freight, Rigging, and Getting It Off the Truck

A two-post lift ships as two columns, a crossbar or overhead assembly, arms, and a hardware crate. Total shipping weight runs 1,800 to 3,500 lb depending on capacity. That’s an LTL freight shipment on a 48-foot trailer, and unless you’re on a dock, the carrier is going to want a liftgate — which most liftgates can’t handle for a 1,400 lb column crate anyway. This is where do-it-yourself buyers get stuck in a parking lot with a driver who’s already annoyed.

Plan on freight in the high hundreds for regional Iowa delivery and more if you’re rural or need residential delivery. If you have a forklift with 4,000 lb capacity and a set of forks long enough to reach under the pallet, you’re fine. If you don’t, factor in a rigging or crane service call. We handle delivery and rigging as part of our install packages because we’ve seen too many damaged columns from a driver tipping a crate off the deck. Also inspect before you sign the bill of lading — once you sign clean, freight damage becomes your problem, not the carrier’s. Take photos of the crate on the trailer. A bent column base plate that you can’t shim flat means the whole unit gets replaced, and that’s a six-week delay in a shop that already has cars stacked up outside.

Line Three: Concrete, Anchors, and the Part Nobody Budgets

Every two-post lift has a minimum concrete spec, and for heavy-duty capacities it’s not the standard 4 inches of 3,000 PSI. An 18,000 lb unit typically wants 6 to 8 inches of 3,000 PSI or better, cured 28 days, with specific distance-from-edge and distance-from-joint requirements. We core-test slabs on a lot of jobs. Older Iowa shop floors — especially buildings that started as implement dealerships or grain facilities — are frequently 4 inches over questionable base.

If the slab fails, you’re cutting and pouring footings. Budget the low four figures per column location for saw-cutting, excavation, rebar, and a proper pour, plus 28 days of cure time before anchoring. That’s the single most common cost surprise in the whole car lift automotive project, and it’s the reason we do a site survey before quoting install. On the anchor side, use the anchors the manufacturer specifies and torque them to spec — not tighter. Over-torqued wedge anchors in marginal concrete crack the slab cone and the anchor loses hold months later. We’ve pulled anchors out of shop floors by hand that someone had gorilla-torqued with an impact. If you’re pouring new concrete anyway, tell us the lift model first so we can spec thickness, reinforcement, and drainage slope around the bays before the truck shows up.

Line Four: Installation, Power, and First Inspection

A professional two-post install runs from the mid hundreds to well into four figures depending on capacity, anchoring conditions, and whether we’re removing an old unit. That includes setting and plumbing the columns, hydraulic hookup, cable routing and equalization, arm restraint adjustment, safety lock function testing, and a load test. On a heavy-duty unit with overhead hydraulics, plan a full day for two techs.

Electrical is a separate trade and a separate line item. Most two-posts run a 208–230V single-phase power unit; heavy-duty models often want three-phase. A licensed electrician pulling a dedicated 30-amp circuit with a disconnect within sight of the power unit is a few hundred to a thousand-plus depending on panel distance and whether the panel has capacity. Do not run a lift on an extension cord or share a circuit with a compressor — you’ll burn a motor and void the warranty. Finally, budget an ALI-certified annual inspection every year. It’s a few hundred dollars, it satisfies your insurer and OSHA expectations, and the inspection record is the single biggest driver of what your equipment is worth at resale. A car lift automotive asset with ten years of documented inspections sells fast. One with no paper trail sells for scrap-adjacent money.

What a Car Lift Automotive Asset Is Actually Worth at Trade-In

Here’s the part almost nobody quotes you. A well-maintained Rotary or Challenger two-post from a recognized brand holds value remarkably well — used units in good working order with current inspection records routinely resell for forty to sixty percent of new after a decade. That’s better than almost any other capital equipment in a shop. The reason is simple: parts availability. A twenty-year-old Rotary SPO12 is still supportable. We ship cables, cylinders, lock ladders, and carriage slide blocks for units built in the 1990s every week.

Off-brand and no-name imports do the opposite. When the importer disappears, so does the parts supply, and an unsupportable lift is worth its steel weight. We’ve had shop owners call wanting a cylinder for a lift whose manufacturer never existed under that name in the first place. That’s a total loss on a capital asset. So when you’re comparing a name-brand quote against a discount unit that’s fifteen percent cheaper, run the ten-year math including resale. The name brand frequently wins outright. The other resale factors: keep the original manual and install paperwork, keep it painted and not rusted at the column base, replace equalizer cables on schedule rather than after they fray, and never let anyone weld on a structural member. Buyers of used equipment look at column bases and cables first, exactly like a used-truck buyer looks at frame rails and tires.

Building the Ten-Year Number for Your Shop

Put it together and a heavy-duty two-post project in an Iowa shop with decent concrete typically lands in the mid four figures to low five figures all-in: equipment, adapters, freight, install, electrical, and first inspection. Add concrete work and the number can climb by several thousand more. Spread across ten years that’s a few hundred dollars a month for a bay that generates revenue every single day, and you recover a meaningful chunk of it at resale if you buy supportable equipment and document maintenance.

The truck shop we mentioned at the top ended up with two 12,000 lb clearfloor units and a set of stackable truck adapters, replacing his 9,000 lb pair. His old units were name-brand and inspected annually, so he sold both to a farm shop and put that money straight back into the new install. Net cost was substantially lower than his worst-case estimate. That’s the whole argument for buying right the first time.
