Cracked slabs, or slabs with visible surface spalling near the intended lift footprint, are red flags that the reinforcement is either absent or has failed. If the slab shows cracking within the lift footprint, the safest path is to cut out that section and repour with proper rebar. Home garage lifts run on 220V single-phase, drawing 15 to 20 amps. A dedicated 20 amp or 30 amp double-pole breaker with proper wire gauge for the run length is what the electrician needs to install. On a detached garage, the run from the house panel to the garage subpanel is often the biggest electrical variable, because trenching a new feeder is expensive and running from an existing garage subpanel is cheap.
The Sioux City buyer had a 60 amp subpanel in the garage with room for one more double-pole breaker. That was adequate for the lift and left headroom for a future air compressor if he wanted to add one. The Sioux City buyer landed on a Rotary or BendPak four-post with the rolling jack option, which we recommended for his specific work mix. Wheel bearing work on a two-post is possible but more awkward at home because the arms have to be positioned precisely and the vehicle is not as fully supported for the lateral loading. For a home hobbyist who does bearing work occasionally rather than daily, the four-post plus rolling jack is the safer and more forgiving configuration. Any of the three brands (BendPak, Atlas, or Rotary) would have been a defensible choice at that tier. What matters more than the brand at that price is the concrete, the electrical, and the honest install work. A great lift on a bad slab is worse than a good lift on a properly prepared slab.
Timeline and What to Do Next
The Sioux City project ran about six weeks from the first phone call to the commissioned lift. Two weeks of that was the core test and the electrical planning. Two weeks was the lead time on the lift from the manufacturer’s warehouse. One week was scheduling the install crew.
