Most of the first-time home garage buyers who call us in central Iowa are chasing one specific job. Last winter it was a guy outside Boone with a 5.3 truck weeping oil from the pan gasket, who had already spent two weekends on his back on cardboard and decided he was done. Those are the right questions, and almost nobody answers them straight. Here is how we walk a first-time buyer through it, in the order the decisions actually come up.

Start With the Job, Not the Brochure
Oil pan gasket replacement is a good test case because it demands specific things. You need the vehicle high enough to work comfortably underneath — realistically 48 inches or more of clearance if you want to sit on a stool rather than lie down. You need the crossmember and pan area completely unobstructed, which rules out anything with structure running down the centerline. And on a lot of modern V8s you need to support the engine from above or below while the pan comes off, so you want room for an engine support bar or a jack stand under the block.
That combination points most home buyers toward a four-post or a full-rise two-post rather than a mid-rise scissor. A mid-rise scissor is a wonderful tool for brakes, tires, and exhaust work at 40-something inches, but it sits under the vehicle in exactly the region you are trying to access, and on many chassis the pan is directly above the frame. We have talked people out of scissor lifts specifically because they described a pan gasket job. Figure out your two or three most common jobs first, then shop. Buying a piece of equipment and then discovering it blocks the work you bought it for is the most expensive mistake in this whole category, and it happens constantly because people shop on capacity and price alone.
Measure Your Garage Before You Look at a Single Model
Three numbers decide what you can own: ceiling height, slab thickness, and door opening height. A typical central Iowa attached garage is somewhere between 8 and 10 feet at the ceiling, sometimes more if the builder went with a raised heel truss. At 8 feet you are looking at low-rise and mid-rise options only. At 9 to 10 feet, a home-duty four-post gets a car high enough for real service work or storage. At 11 to 12 feet, a full-rise two-post becomes realistic, and that changes everything about what you can do.
Slab thickness matters differently depending on the design. A four-post spreads its load across four base plates and, in most residential configurations, does not require anchoring at all — which is a genuine advantage for homeowners who do not want to drill their floor or who might want to move the equipment later. A two-post has to be anchored into a minimum of four inches of good concrete, and residential slabs in central Iowa are frequently a nominal four inches with a thin, weak surface layer. We core-test before we anchor a two-post in a house garage, every time. Also measure the door: the tracks and opener rail eat the height you thought you had, and an opener motor mounted dead center is the number one physical conflict we run into on home installs.
Four-Post vs. Two-Post for a Home Garage
For a first-time buyer doing occasional maintenance, a four-post is usually the easier ownership experience. You drive on, chock the wheels, and lift. There is no learning curve on arm placement, no worry about pinch weld damage, and mechanical locks hold the load at every position. Add a rolling bridge jack later if you want wheels-free access for brakes or suspension. Most four-posts are also available on casters, so you can roll the whole thing to the side when you need the bay for something else, and you can park a second vehicle underneath in January.
A two-post is the better tool if you are doing real work rather than storage. Full rise, nothing under the car, suspension hanging free, and you can walk the entire underside without stepping over runways. The tradeoffs are ceiling height, permanent anchoring, and the fact that setting the arms correctly on an unfamiliar vehicle is a skill. For an oil pan gasket job specifically, either works — the four-post keeps the wheels loaded, which is fine because you are not touching suspension. Electrical: Single Phase Is Almost Certainly What You Have
This is the question that trips up nearly every first-time buyer. Residential service in central Iowa is single phase — typically 120/240V split phase from a pole or pad transformer. You do not have three phase at your house, you cannot get it economically, and you do not need it. Every home-duty lift we sell is available in a single-phase configuration, and the power unit is usually a 220-230V single-phase motor in the 2 to 3 horsepower range. Some smaller units run on 110V, which is tempting because you already have outlets, but a 110V power unit lifts noticeably slower and draws hard on startup.
Practically, plan on a dedicated 240V circuit. A 20-amp two-pole breaker with 12 gauge wire covers most residential power units; some manufacturers spec 30 amp, so read the plate before your electrician buys wire. Put a disconnect or a clearly labeled breaker where the operator can reach it, and do not share the circuit with the welder, the compressor, or the dryer. We have been called out to diagnose a lift that would not rise under load and found a shared circuit dropping voltage under the compressor’s startup surge — the lift was fine. Also confirm rotation direction on the motor at first power-up, since a miswired motor running backward will not build pressure and people assume the pump is bad.
Air, Hydraulics, and What Else You Need on Day One
Most lifts need compressed air for the lock release solenoid, and a four-post rolling jack is air-actuated. You do not need a big compressor — a small pancake unit will trip the locks — but you do need a line run to the equipment. Plan that at install time. Running a quarter-inch line along the wall while the garage is empty takes twenty minutes; doing it after everything is in place is a different afternoon entirely.
On the hydraulic side, factory-fill fluid requirements are modest — most home-duty units take a few gallons of AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil, or ATF on some models, and the manual will tell you which. Do not substitute. Beyond fluid, budget for a few accessories that turn the lift from usable into genuinely good: tall adapters or truck adapters if your vehicles have running boards or plastic rocker cladding, a drip tray if you plan to store a vehicle up top, and a caster kit if the garage does double duty. And buy a proper drain pan and a good stool — the whole point of putting a car lift automotive setup in your garage is to stop working on the floor, and people forget to buy the chair. We also strongly recommend keeping a copy of the manual somewhere other than the shelf that gets buried in June.
Installation, Inspection, and Ongoing Maintenance
Home lifts can be owner-installed, and plenty are. What we see go wrong is anchor torque, column plumb, and cable or chain equalization. Anchors have a specified torque value and an embedment depth; over-torquing spins them in the hole and under-torquing leaves them loose, and neither is obvious by feel. Columns that are out of plumb by even a small amount put uneven load on the carriage bearings and cause the characteristic groaning and jerky rise that people describe when they call us. On a four-post, equalizing the four cables so all corners lift together is the single most important adjustment, and it needs rechecking after the first few weeks of use as the cables seat.
Once it is in, the maintenance load is light but not zero. Check the cables or chains for fraying and proper tension a couple times a year. Grease the sheaves and slider blocks per the manual. Watch the hydraulic fluid level and look for weeping at the cylinder seal and hose fittings. Test the mechanical locks by raising the lift, lowering it onto the locks, and confirming it holds at each position — do that every time, not just annually. ANSI/ALI guidance calls for annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and while nobody is enforcing that in a private garage, it is genuinely worth having someone competent look at it once a year.
