Start With the Job, Not the Spec Sheet
If your work is oil changes, filter service, brake fluid, differential and transfer case fluid, and seasonal tire rotation, you need wheels-free access underneath and about three feet of standing headroom below the vehicle. You do not need full column rise. That opens up options a lot of first-time buyers skip past — a mid-rise scissor lift, for instance, will get a sedan or a half-ton high enough to drain a pan comfortably, folds down flat when you are done, and does not need a twelve-foot ceiling. For a garage with a standard eight or nine foot ceiling, that may be the only realistic choice.
If instead you want to store a second vehicle overhead through the winter, or you plan on suspension work and exhaust jobs, a four-post is usually the better answer. Four-posts drive on, carry the vehicle on its own tires, and are far more forgiving of an imperfect slab because the weight spreads across four posts and often the whole thing can be freestanding or on casters. The tradeoff is that the runways block the wheels, so tire and brake work needs a rolling bridge jack. Capacity, Ceiling, and Slab for a Residential Garage

Ceiling height is the other hard limit. Take your slab-to-lowest-obstruction measurement — remember the garage door track and opener, which usually hang lower than the joists — then subtract the vehicle height and the runway or platform height. What is left is your working room. For a two-post in a home garage you generally want eleven feet minimum, and twelve is comfortable. For slab, four inches of good 3,000 PSI concrete is the common minimum for anchored lifts, though many residential garages were poured thinner than the owner thinks. New Versus Used: What Actually Wears Out

On a used unit, look first for oil at the cylinder rod where it enters the gland — a wet, dirt-caked rod means the rod seal is done. Then check the cable ends for broken strands and rust bloom, listen for the locks engaging crisply at every notch, and cycle the lift fully to see whether it drifts down under load. Look at the power unit for a cracked reservoir, weeping hose fittings, and a motor that groans instead of spinning up. Finally, confirm the model and serial are legible, because without them you cannot order correct parts. Hydraulic Cylinder Seals: Why They Leak and What It Means

Inside a typical lift cylinder there is a piston seal that separates pressure from return, a rod seal at the gland that keeps oil in, a wiper or dust seal outboard of that to keep grit out, and a bearing or bushing that keeps the rod centered. Failures follow a pattern. Grit gets past a worn wiper, scores the rod, and the scored rod then destroys the rod seal. Oil weeps down the column. If the piston seal goes instead, the lift will feel weak and may creep down under load even though nothing is dripping.
Temperature swings in an unheated Iowa or Nebraska garage accelerate all of it. Cold hydraulic oil is thick, startup pressures spike, and seals that were already tired split. Condensation inside the reservoir introduces water, water plus steel makes rust, and rust particles act like lapping compound on every seal they touch. Rebuild Kit or Replacement Cylinder?
When a cylinder leaks, you have two paths. A seal kit — rod seal, piston seal, wiper, and O-rings for the gland — is the cheaper option by a wide margin, usually a small fraction of a new cylinder. It is the right call when the rod is smooth, the bore is clean, and the leak is clearly at the gland. Rebuilding is genuinely doable in a home shop if you are patient: bleed the pressure, support the carriage mechanically before you touch anything, drain and cap the lines, unpin the cylinder, pull the gland, inspect the bore with a light, and reassemble with the seals lubricated and installed in the correct orientation. Nick a seal lip going in and you will be doing it twice.
Replace the whole cylinder when the rod is pitted or scored deep enough to catch a fingernail, when the bore shows scoring or a bulge, when the rod is bent, or when the mounting ears are cracked. A gouged rod will eat every new seal you install. Cost-wise, seal kits run in the low-to-mid double digits up to around a couple hundred dollars depending on brand and bore, while a complete replacement cylinder generally lands in the several-hundred range for common home-garage models.
