Ceiling height decides your lift style more than anything else. A standard clearfloor two-post with an overhead beam wants roughly 12 feet of clearance to raise a full-size pickup to comfortable working height. A baseplate two-post moves the crossover hoses to the floor and lets you work under a 10 to 11 foot ceiling, at the cost of a small hose bump you drive over. Four-post lifts vary widely, and low-ceiling storage models are designed specifically for garages in the 9 to 10 foot range.
Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. Garage door tracks, opener rails, light fixtures, and truss webbing all count. You can core-drill a small test hole in an out-of-the-way corner to check thickness — it takes ten minutes and tells you everything.
