Getting a car lift automotive setup from the freight carrier to your shop floor is one of the most under-planned steps in the entire purchase process, and it can turn a routine installation into a two-day nightmare if the wrong equipment shows up at the wrong time. Freight Class, Shipping Weight, and What a Lift Actually Looks Like Uncrated

A ten-thousand-pound rated two-post car lift automotive setup ships as three or four crated pieces on a single standard 96-inch-by-48-inch pallet, with total shipping weight around 1,750 to 2,100 pounds. Freight class is typically 85 for full LTL shipments. The pallet includes two column crates, one arm-set crate, and one power-unit crate. Overall shipping dimensions run about 145 inches long by 48 inches wide by 40 inches tall. The columns are the heaviest single pieces at approximately 500 to 600 pounds each. That weight matters when you plan unload logistics.

Uncrated, each column is roughly 12 feet long, 20 inches wide, and 6 inches deep. The power unit is a compact enclosure about 24 inches by 18 inches by 30 inches at 90 pounds. Arms come bundled with pins, pucks, and small hardware. When the freight truck arrives at a southwest Iowa municipal yard, the driver expects the yard to unload; freight carriers do not include unload labor as a standard service. That is where the forklift and lift-gate planning starts. Getting the car lift automotive freight logistics right is the difference between a smooth install and a delayed one.

Lift-Gate Truck vs Standard Trailer: Which You Need

Freight carriers offer three delivery types for a car lift automotive shipment: standard trailer with dock, standard trailer without dock, and lift-gate truck. If your municipal yard has a loading dock at trailer height, standard trailer with dock is cheapest and easiest; the truck backs to the dock and a forklift on the yard offloads. If your yard has no dock but has a forklift with at least 3,000-pound capacity and 60-inch fork length, standard trailer without dock works; the forklift enters the trailer and lifts the pallet off from inside.

If your yard has neither a dock nor a suitable forklift, the lift-gate truck is required. Lift-gate service costs an additional fee depending on carrier and region. The truck rear tailgate lowers the pallet to ground level, then the pallet is rolled off with a manual pallet jack. The pallet jack must be able to handle 2,100 pounds; most standard yard pallet jacks can. Forklift Capacity Requirements at the Municipal Yard

Municipal fleet yards usually have forklifts on site for snowplow blade handling, mower deck lifting, and general shop material movement. Most yard forklifts are 4,000 or 5,000-pound capacity units, which is more than enough to move a car lift automotive pallet; the loaded pallet weighs around 2,100 pounds. What matters is fork length and forklift boom clearance under the truck trailer. Standard 42-inch forks are too short to reach across a 96-inch pallet safely; 60-inch forks are the standard and 72-inch forks are safer for long crates.

Boom clearance under the trailer is often the surprise variable. A trailer deck sits about 48 to 54 inches off the ground; the forklift boom needs vertical clearance to enter the trailer, tilt back, and exit with the pallet. Most yard forklifts have adequate clearance, but propane forklifts with mast heights over 8 feet may hit the trailer overhead. Before delivery day, measure the forklift mast height at maximum tilt-back and compare to the trailer entry clearance. If there is any doubt, order lift-gate service. Uncrating Safely Inside the Bay

Once the pallet is inside the bay, uncrating is the next step and it needs to be done carefully. The column crates use heavy-duty wooden framing with band straps and lag screws. Cut the bands with metal shears, not a utility knife, which will slip and cut a hand. Remove the top slats first, then the side slats, exposing the columns lying horizontal. Each column has plastic corner protectors and shrink wrap; leave those in place until the column is set upright. Column paint scratches easily on concrete, and the shrink wrap protects the paint during the flip-to-vertical maneuver.

The flip requires two people minimum, and preferably three. One at each end lifts the column, the third guides the base pad clear of the pallet. Column bases have anti-slip pads on the bottom; do not drag on concrete or the pads tear. Once vertical, the column is stable on its own base and can be walked into position by two people using column-mounted handles. Positioning Columns Before Anchor Drill

Column positioning is critical because once anchor holes are drilled, the columns are committed to that location. Standard drive-through spacing between the inside faces of the two columns is 112 inches for a symmetric setup. Center the two columns on the bay centerline, then verify perpendicular alignment to the bay walls using a chalk line or laser. Measure diagonally from each column base to the opposite corner of the anchor pattern; the two diagonals should match within 1/4 inch. If they do not match, one column is skewed and needs adjustment before drilling.

Base-pad orientation also matters. Each column base has four anchor-bolt holes in a rectangular pattern; the long axis of the rectangle points away from the vehicle centerline. Getting this orientation right the first time avoids re-drilling. Once positioning is verified, mark each anchor location with a paint pen or crayon, then move the columns aside, drill the holes, vacuum the concrete dust, and set the wedge or epoxy anchors. Return the columns to position and torque the anchors to spec, typically 100 to 130 foot-pounds depending on anchor type. Every car lift automotive install we do follows this exact positioning sequence, and skipping any step introduces the possibility of a re-drill that adds cost and time to the job.

Coordinating Freight With Install Day

The best-run car lift automotive delivery has freight arriving 24 to 48 hours before install crew arrival, giving the shop time to uncrate and stage components without pressure. Same-day delivery and install is possible but risky; if the freight truck is late, the install crew is idle at billable hours. Freight tracking numbers are provided at ship-out, usually 3 to 5 days after the purchase order clears. Municipal yards often have specific delivery hours matching public-works shift schedules, so communicate those to us at order time so we can note them on the bill of lading.
