Overlanding builders present an interesting car lift automotive problem. The trucks they work on are taller than stock, heavier than stock, and often have delicate bumpers or auxiliary tanks in exactly the places a lift arm wants to go. We are Auto Lift Services in Ames, Iowa, and we recently installed a lift for a small overlanding shop in the Quad Cities area that specializes in bumper builds, rack systems, and full expedition conversions. Their bread and butter, though, is not the fancy work. It is oil changes and fluid service on the trucks they built for their customers. This is that case study.

The overlanding truck problem for two-post lifts

A stock half-ton pickup drops onto a two-post car lift automotive setup no problem. A three-inch-lifted Tacoma with rock sliders, a bumper-mounted winch, and a rear swing-out tire carrier is a different story. The rock sliders are welded exactly where the lift arm pads want to sit. The winch and bumper add several hundred pounds of nose weight that the lift arms have to balance around. The swing-out shifts the center of gravity aft. Everything about a built truck fights a symmetric two-post.

For this shop, we recommended a four-post lift instead. A four-post lifts the truck by the tires, which does not care about rock sliders or aftermarket bumpers. Load balance is a non-issue because all four corners lift together. The trade-off is that the wheels are not free, so any brake, suspension, or wheel work requires rolling jacks. We spec’d the lift with a pair of matched rolling jacks and a set of adapters. That configuration handles 100 percent of the shop’s oil, fluid, and drivetrain work plus about 80 percent of their suspension work.

Choosing capacity for a lifted-truck shop

A four-post car lift automotive setup rated at 9,000 pounds is enough for a stock full-size truck. It is not enough for a built expedition vehicle with a camper. Once you start adding a rooftop tent, a rear rack, spare fuel and water, a full drawer system, and larger tires, a half-ton pickup can weigh 8,500 pounds or more without a driver. Add a driver and gear and you are pushing 9,000 pounds. That means the 9,000-pound lift is at rated capacity, which is not where you want to run every day.

We spec’d a 14,000-pound BendPak four-post for this shop instead. That gives them a comfortable safety margin on every truck they will realistically see, including three-quarter-ton overland builds and full-size expedition rigs with slide-in campers. The upcharge from 9,000 to 14,000 pounds was modest and the peace of mind was worth it. When we quote a car lift automotive package for an overlanding builder, we assume the trucks are heavier than they look. They almost always are.

Ceiling height for lifted trucks on a four-post

A four-post lift raises the truck by roughly 72 inches at full extension. Add a stock truck height of about 78 inches and you are at 150 inches, or 12 feet 6 inches. Now add a three-inch suspension lift and a rooftop tent that adds 12 inches on top, and you are at 165 inches, or 13 feet 9 inches. The shop needs at least that much clear ceiling. Their Quad Cities building had 14 feet at the peak, which was just enough. Not every overlanding shop has that.

If your ceiling is 12 feet, you cannot run a stock four-post lift at full extension on a built expedition truck. You can still lift the truck to about half height, which is enough for oil changes and fluid work but not enough to work under the truck comfortably. In that case we recommend a mid-rise scissor lift as a secondary option, or a two-post with careful arm placement around aftermarket bumpers. The decision comes down to what kind of work you do most. For pure oil service, half height on a four-post is fine.

Install and the first month of oil changes

Install took two days in the Quad Cities shop, mostly because the electrical service had to be upgraded to 220-volt single-phase before we could wire the powerpack. Once that was done, column placement and rail assembly ran on schedule. ALI safety testing at the end of day two closed the install. First truck up was a customer’s built Tundra for a 5,000-mile oil change and a rear differential service. The shop had the truck in and out in 90 minutes.

Over the first month, the shop ran 42 oil changes through the lift. Almost all of them were on customer trucks they had built, meaning the shop knew every truck’s suspension geometry, tire size, and weight already. That knowledge is what makes an overlanding builder shop faster on their own customers than any generic quick-lube. The car lift automotive setup is not doing anything a generic lift would not do. What makes it work is the shop’s specialization plus the lift’s capacity headroom.

Warranty in year one and the powerpack that hiccupped

At month five, the shop had a powerpack issue. The lift raised normally on the way up, but on the way down it hesitated for a half-second before the descent valve opened. Not a safety issue and not a hard failure, but not right. They called us the day they noticed. We drove a replacement descent valve out from Ames the next day and swapped it. Total time on site was 45 minutes. The manufacturer covered the part under the one-year warranty. Our labor was covered under our install warranty.

That kind of hiccup is exactly what warranty coverage is for. The car lift automotive package protects the shop against exactly this: a small mechanical fault in year one, caught early, fixed fast, and no downtime for the shop’s customers. If the shop had bought from an online distributor with no local presence, that same fix might have taken two weeks of shipping delays and phone calls. Regional dealer with local stock and a service truck is the difference between fixed today and fixed next month.

The year-end review with the shop owner

At the twelve-month mark, we sat down with the shop owner and reviewed the year. The lift had done 480 oil changes, 90 tire rotations, 40 differential services, and about 30 suspension jobs using the rolling jacks. The descent valve was the only warranty event. Maintenance cost for the year was minimal: hydraulic fluid top-off, cable inspection and lubrication, and a set of new pinch weld pads to replace ones that had worn. Total maintenance spend was well under three figures.

The shop owner’s biggest surprise from year one was how much the four-post configuration changed his workflow versus the two-post he had used at a previous shop. Oil changes were faster because he could just drive the truck on. Suspension jobs were slower because he had to set the rolling jacks. On balance, given his oil-heavy service mix, the four-post was the right pick. If his shop had been suspension-heavy, we would have recommended a two-post with low-profile arms instead. The recommendation is always downstream of the work mix.

What we tell every overlanding builder

A car lift automotive setup for an overlanding shop needs three things: enough capacity to handle a fully loaded expedition truck, enough ceiling to raise a truck with a rooftop tent to a workable height, and enough flexibility to handle both oil-service and suspension work. A 14,000-pound four-post with rolling jacks hits all three. A 12,000-pound two-post with low-profile arms hits two out of three and misses on the aftermarket bumper problem. The four-post is nearly always the correct pick for this customer type.
