A frame-off project might sit on the same platform for four months, going up and down twice a week while someone welds patch panels. That is a fundamentally different duty cycle than a general repair bay cycling twenty times a day, and it changes what you should spend money on.
Low cycle count with long dwell times means you are paying for structural integrity and locking reliability, not for cylinder speed or power unit output. It also means a four-post with mechanical locks at multiple heights is doing exactly what you want: holding a car dead steady for weeks with zero hydraulic load. Conversely, if your shop also does mechanical work and turns cars weekly, you need at least one wheels-free position, which pushes you toward a two-post or a four-post with a rolling bridge jack. The part shop owners miss is that certification applies to a specific model and capacity configuration, not to a brand. A manufacturer can have ALI Gold certified models sitting alongside uncertified ones in the same catalog. Check the ALI directory for the exact model number before you buy, and confirm the gold label is physically on the unit when it arrives. This is where most serious restoration shops should land, because it covers everything from a Model A to a dually and gives you wheels-free access when you need to pull drums. The top tier is commercial-grade Rotary or Challenger equipment — heavier steel, better cylinder seals, parts availability measured in days rather than months, and a service network that actually shows up. Step Four: Configuring for Seasonal Storage Stacking
Storage stacking is where the math gets interesting. A four-post with a car parked underneath doubles your floor efficiency, but only if your ceiling supports it. You need the height of the lower vehicle plus the runway thickness plus the height of the upper vehicle plus a few inches of clearance. For two typical sedans that is around eleven feet. For a lifted truck over a Corvette you might need fourteen. Measure your actual cars, not averages.
Then think about access order. A car stored on top is not coming down until the car underneath moves, and the car underneath is not moving if it is a non-running project with the engine out. The fix is planning: put the cars you will touch during the season on the ground in accessible bays, and stack the ones that are genuinely dormant.
