When a municipal fleet manager in the Iowa-Illinois corridor calls us about seasonal vehicle storage, the first question we always ask is about electrical service. Why the electrical review comes before the purchase order

The single most common delay we see on a municipal install is not the concrete, the ceiling height, or the freight schedule — it is the electrical service. A car lift automotive package usually arrives with a motor that expects a specific voltage and phase, and swapping that motor after the fact costs weeks. When we take a call from a fleet manager, the very first thing we send back is a one-page electrical questionnaire that covers utility voltage, panel amperage, and how many spare breaker slots are open. That answer tells us whether we ship a single-phase 220 unit, a three-phase 208, or a three-phase 460.

Older municipal shops in towns along the Iowa-Illinois corridor often have three-phase service left over from a machine shop or a paint booth, and that changes everything about the recommendation. A three-phase motor runs cooler, draws less inrush, and lasts longer under the duty cycle a seasonal-storage bay actually sees. We would rather delay a quote by a day than send out the wrong motor.

Single-phase vs three-phase for Iowa municipal shops

Most small-town municipal garages we visit are running single-phase 220-volt service, and that is fine for the majority of two-post lifts on the market. Rotary and Challenger both offer a car lift automotive package in single-phase configurations, and a 10,000-pound single-phase two-post will cover every light-duty pickup, plow truck, and cargo van in a typical city fleet. The catch is that single-phase motors draw significantly more amps at startup than the nameplate suggests, and a marginal panel will trip.

Three-phase gets interesting once the fleet includes medium-duty trucks or once the shop is running more than one lift at a time. A three-phase 208 or 460 draws less current per leg, which means a smaller conductor and a smaller breaker for the same horsepower. For a public-works shop that is already pulling three-phase for an air compressor or a shop press, adding a three-phase lift is a small load. We help fleet managers pull the utility bill and check the service size before we commit to a motor spec.

Circuit sizing and the real amp draw we see in the field

Nameplate amps and real-world amps are different numbers, and municipal electricians appreciate when we spell that out up front. A 220-volt single-phase 4-horsepower motor on a two-post lift lists somewhere around 22 running amps, but the inrush on a cold start under a full load can spike to 60 or 70 amps for a few cycles. That is why we always recommend a 40-amp breaker on a dedicated 8-gauge circuit, even though the running load would technically fit inside a 30-amp breaker.

On a four-post storage lift with a smaller motor, the numbers relax, and a 30-amp circuit is usually fine. Either way, the circuit needs to be dedicated — sharing the lift with a battery charger or a shop vac is a recipe for nuisance trips. We walk the panel with the shop electrician before we finalize the quote, and we write the wire-size and breaker call directly on the site plan so nothing is guessed at during install week.

Concrete, slab thickness, and the second dealbreaker

Once the electrical is settled, the next fleet question is the floor. A car lift automotive anchor pattern only holds if the concrete underneath is at least 4 inches thick, 3,000 psi, and reasonably level. Older municipal buildings in the corridor often have a slab poured in the 1970s that measures closer to 3 inches, with rebar in unpredictable places. We bring a rotary-hammer test kit on the site visit and pull a small core if we have any doubt.

Where the slab is thin, the fix is usually a saw-cut pad — cut out a rectangle at each column, dig down, tie in rebar, and pour a 6-inch reinforced footer. That adds a day of labor and a modest concrete bill, but it saves the shop from a column that walks under load a year later. We coordinate directly with the municipal facilities office on the timing, because most towns want the concrete work bid separately even when we handle the install.

Seasonal storage lifts versus daily-service lifts

A city that stores parade vehicles, plow attachments, or a mothballed brush truck over the summer has different needs than a shop that lifts a truck three times a day. Storage duty means the lift sits under load for months at a time, and the priority is a mechanical locking system that does not rely on hydraulic pressure to hold height. Every commercial-grade lift we sell has secondary mechanical locks, but on a storage bay we make sure the fleet manager understands that the truck rests on the locks, not on the cylinders.

Four-post lifts are usually the better match for long-term storage because the vehicle sits on its own wheels on a flat runway. There is no arm-restraint concern, no swing-arm creep, and the truck can be pushed onto the runway on a cold morning without a jack under the frame. For a fleet manager who is trying to squeeze a second parade vehicle into an existing bay, a four-post storage lift is the answer nine times out of ten.

Choosing two-post or four-post for a municipal bay

When the same bay has to do both — daily service in the winter and seasonal storage in the summer — we walk through the tradeoffs honestly. A two-post gives full underside access for brake work, exhaust, and drivetrain, and it is the right call for a bay that mostly turns wrenches. A four-post gives storage flexibility and a rolling-jack option for wheels-free service, but the runway takes up floor space that a two-post does not.

For a mid-size city garage with a single service bay, our default recommendation is a 10,000 or 12,000 pound two-post with an ALI-certified swing-arm restraint, plus a rolling floor jack for tire and brake work. That configuration handles every truck in a normal municipal fleet and leaves the bay clear when the lift is stowed. If storage is the primary mission and service is secondary, we flip the recommendation to a 9,000 or 14,000 pound four-post with an optional rolling jack. What actually happens on install day

Install day for a municipal car lift automotive project runs about six to eight hours for a two-post, and a little longer for a four-post with a rolling jack. We arrive with the columns, the crossbeam, the hydraulic power unit, and every fastener sorted into labeled bags. The freight has usually landed a week ahead so the shop can inspect for damage and stage the components inside the bay. We anchor first, run the hydraulic lines and the electrical whip second, and cycle the lift under a full-weight test load before we hand over the keys.

On a fleet install we always leave the shop with a laminated operator card, the ALI safety-check sheet, and a direct phone number for tech support. We circle back at the 90-day mark to check torque on the anchors and top off the hydraulic reservoir if needed. That first-year follow-up is the difference between a lift that runs quietly for 20 years and one that develops a slow drift nobody catches.
