A car lift automotive install is only half the story — the real test is the first twelve months. A family-run RV and trailer service shop in northeast Iowa called us the month before their state inspection season started. Their old two-post was undersized for the fifth-wheels and toy haulers they wanted to inspect, and their ceiling was too tight for anything bigger. We spent an afternoon on site, walked them through mobile column posts as the answer, and then we came back for the install six weeks later. This is what their first year looked like — from site survey through the peak inspection cycle, through the surprises we did not plan for, through the year-one performance review.

Month zero: site survey and the ceiling problem

Their existing bay had 13-foot ceilings, which sounds tall until you realize a Class A motorcoach roof sits at 12 ft 6 in. Add a mobile column lifting under the frame and you are pushing the motorcoach roof into the joists. That ruled out any traditional car lift automotive install for their larger units. What worked instead was a set of four Challenger mobile columns, which lift by wheel-cradle rather than by frame contact, and require zero overhead clearance beyond the vehicle itself. The vehicle rises with the wheels; the roof stays exactly where it was relative to the wheels.

The ceiling still mattered for their smaller work — trailer axles, light-duty pickups pulling in with fifth-wheel setups, motorcycles on their side lot. For that we quoted a companion 12,000 lb 2-post in a second bay with 11-foot clearance. That car lift automotive shops with mixed inventories actually need. One tool for the heavy inspections, one tool for the light-duty prep and axle work. We measured door swing too — their overhead door tracks dropped their effective clearance by 6 inches at the entry, but the drop stopped 4 feet in. Behind the drop we had the full 13 feet. That is where the 2-post columns landed.

Delivery week: freight, forklift, and door-clear paths

Their mobile columns shipped as four crated columns plus a control cart, total shipping weight around 5,400 lb. Their 2-post shipped as two crates, another 1,900 lb. We coordinated both onto the same freight run and met the truck with our forklift on install day. Their shop was rural — no dock, no forklift — but they had a paved driveway wide enough for our truck and a bay entry big enough to walk the mobile columns straight in on the forklift.

Their overhead door was 12 ft wide by 14 ft tall, which is generous for RV service. The mobile columns are just under 8 feet tall standing upright and needed the tall door. Setup inside took our team about six hours: mobile columns commissioned, control cart tested, 2-post columns anchored and plumb, hydraulics bled, load-cycle tests on both units. First customer came the following Monday. First-week lesson: their apprentice tech had never operated mobile columns before. Our install lead spent an extra 90 minutes walking through the safety-cam engagement, the interlocked column syncing, and the load-cycle procedure. Training on a new car lift automotive setup is not optional — it is part of the install. Anyone who hands you a lift and drives off is doing you a disservice.

Month one: first raises and first surprises

The first raise on their new mobile columns was a Class C on Ford E-450 chassis. Went up smoothly, tech worked underneath comfortably, back down without incident. Second raise the same day was a fifth-wheel travel trailer with the tow vehicle detached — mobile columns handle both axles simultaneously across a 4-column set, so the trailer sits stable with all wheels off the ground. Third raise was a Class A on Freightliner chassis and here we hit the first surprise: the front tires were unusually far forward relative to the frame, and the column cradle positioning had to be adjusted from what we had originally trained.

We drove out the next day, walked through the alternate positioning, and their tech had it internalized by the third try. That kind of week-two revisit is normal on a new car lift automotive install and we build it into our support pattern. First surprise number two: their air compressor was undersized for the column pneumatics when all four ran simultaneously. They upgraded to a larger compressor at week three and the syncing behavior smoothed out. Not something the lift manual flagged loudly, but a real-world reality when you are running a 4-column set in an active shop.

Month three: peak state inspection cycle

Iowa’s peak inspection season for their customer base runs mid-March through May. During that window their new car lift automotive setup handled 47 RV inspections and 63 trailer inspections in about ten weeks. That is more than double their prior year’s throughput. The mobile columns paid for themselves in raw capacity — three techs could work under a Class A while the trailer bay was mid-inspection on a fifth-wheel. Previously they had one bay, one lift, and one raised vehicle at a time.

One meaningful lesson from peak: they needed better lighting under the mobile-column-lifted vehicles. LED under-vehicle strip kits are a low-cost add-on we now recommend on every RV or trailer install. Their techs were working with headlamps for the first three weeks of peak and it slowed inspection time by a real measurable amount. We shipped them a set of strip lights out of Ames inventory and their tech ran them on rechargeable batteries. Later they hard-wired the strips to a bay circuit. Small detail, big impact. A car lift automotive shops actually use is the one they can see under.

Month six: unplanned maintenance

At the six-month mark one of the mobile columns started dropping slower than the other three. We drove up, tested the pneumatic pressure per column, and found a slow leak at a quick-connect fitting on that column’s air line. Ten-minute fix, no parts cost, done. This is why we service what we sell. A shop calling around for the OEM’s regional service tech would have waited days to weeks for that fix and paid a service call fee to boot.

Two other small items surfaced around the six-month mark: the 2-post arm restraint pins had developed a slight burr that needed filing (five minutes), and the mobile column control cart’s charging brick needed replacement (10-dollar part, shipped from Ames next day). None of this was concerning. All of it was normal for a hard-working commercial car lift automotive setup at the six-month point. Total maintenance cost in year one, including our service calls: under $200. That is what an install-and-support relationship looks like versus a mail-order lift that arrives on a truck and disappears from your life after the freight bill clears.

Month nine: training the second tech

At the nine-month point they hired a second full-time tech and asked us for a training refresher on both units. We sent our install lead up for a Saturday morning session — three hours, one 2-post cycle, three mobile column cycles with the new tech operating, followed by a walk-through of the maintenance log. Their existing tech sat in on the refresher too, which was actually good because he had gotten into a couple of habits that were technically fine but not optimal.

Training that spans multiple sessions is worth more than any single training day. Nobody retains everything from a single install-day session, especially when the shop is chaotic and freight is arriving. A follow-up session at the point where a shop has real experience under their belt lets us reinforce the safety-cam engagement, the anchor re-torque checks, the daily inspection walk-around, and the manufacturer’s recommended lubrication schedule. The car lift automotive shops keep working safely for decades are the ones where training happened more than once.

Year one review: throughput, cost, and what we would change

Year-one numbers for their bay: 187 RV inspections, 254 trailer inspections, plus general axle, brake, and slide-out service. Throughput up 130 percent over prior year on the same building footprint. Zero safety incidents. One small maintenance episode. Two training sessions. Everything working the way it should be a year in. Their owner said the biggest lift-related surprise of year one was how much harder his old bay had been fighting him — he did not realize how much friction was in his workflow until the new setup removed it.

What we would change if we did it over: LED under-vehicle lights on install day, larger air compressor on install day, and one more training session at month three of peak. Everything else played out roughly as expected.
