A tire and alignment shop owner in a small town outside Cedar Rapids called us about adding a second car lift automotive setup so he could handle seasonal vehicle storage in his back bay. He’d been renting bay space to a neighboring detailer during winter and realized he could triple his winter revenue by storing customer cars on a lift instead. The idea was solid; the site prep turned out to be the whole conversation. His back bay was 14-foot-6 clear, had a 4-inch slab with a small crack running through the proposed column location, and the sub-panel was a full 90 feet from the install spot. Every one of those items needed a decision before we could quote him a lift.

Site survey: what we measure before we quote

Every east-central Iowa car lift automotive quote we generate starts with a site survey, either in person or via video call with the shop owner walking the space with his phone. We measure four things every time: clear ceiling height at the exact install spot, distance from the nearest 220V circuit to the proposed powerpack location, distance from the nearest air line to the columns, and the width and depth of the bay itself. Those four measurements determine 80 percent of the equipment recommendation. Everything else — brand, color, symmetric versus asymmetric, add-ons — comes after.

The Cedar Rapids shop had plenty of bay width, plenty of depth, and a marginal ceiling. Because he was buying for seasonal storage rather than active service work, we recommended a four-post instead of the two-post he originally asked about. A four-post rated for 9,000 lb doesn’t need door-swing clearance because you drive the car onto the runways rather than lifting from the frame. That solved the ceiling problem, the door-swing problem, and the slab-crack problem in one recommendation.

Concrete: what actually matters and what doesn’t

Everyone who sells lifts has a story about a slab that failed. The reality is that most shop slabs in east-central Iowa built in the last twenty-five years are perfectly adequate for a properly sized car lift automotive install. What matters is not the age of the slab but three specific properties: thickness at the anchor points, psi rating of the mix, and reinforcement pattern. Iowa building code for commercial slab-on-grade is 4 inches at 3,000 psi minimum, and most newer shops exceed that spec by design.

The situations where slab becomes a real problem are: converted buildings where the original slab was residential-grade, older shops with slab that predates modern psi standards, and any location with visible cracking through the anchor zone. Small hairline cracks away from the anchor zone are cosmetic. Cracks running directly through the proposed column footprint are a real issue. We core-drill during the site survey to verify, and if the slab isn’t adequate we quote either a footing pour or a bay relocation.

Electrical: 220V, single-phase, and the sub-panel distance question

Standard two-post and four-post car lift automotive setups run on 220V single-phase, 20 to 30 amps depending on the powerpack. Every east-central Iowa shop that has a compressor already has this available somewhere in the building — the question is whether it’s available at the specific install location. Running new conduit 90 feet across a shop floor is a $600 to $1,200 line item on the install quote depending on whether we can go overhead in the joists or need to trench and pour.

The shop we’re talking about had his sub-panel on the opposite wall from the install bay, and running conduit overhead through his exposed joist ceiling ended up being straightforward. Total electrical add-on came in at $875, which he paid gladly because it meant he could keep his compressor circuit free for future expansion. Site survey caught this; if we’d quoted the lift without checking, he would have gotten a nasty electrical bill on install day.

Air line routing and the arm-restraint release

Two-post car lift automotive setups have an air-actuated arm restraint mechanism on most modern models — the pin that locks the swing arms in place releases when you tug a small pneumatic control at the column. That means you need shop air within 25 feet of each column, at 90 psi minimum. Four-post setups don’t have this requirement. For a shop where the compressor is on one wall and the proposed lift is on the opposite, you’re either adding air line as part of the install or you’re choosing a lift without pneumatic arm restraint.

The east-central Iowa shop had air within reach of his existing lift bay but not the new storage bay. Because we recommended a four-post for the storage application, this became a non-issue. If we’d stayed with a two-post, we would have added 40 feet of overhead air line to the install quote. Small detail, but it’s the kind of thing that turns a smooth install into a mid-job hardware store trip.

Bay width, working clearance, and vehicle mix

For a storage application, bay width is about vehicle clearance rather than working clearance. A four-post car lift automotive setup with a full-size pickup stored on top needs about 12 feet of bay width to load and unload without door-swing binding. A stack of two normal-sized sedans needs 10. The east-central Iowa shop’s back bay was 14 feet wide, which gave him room for a four-post plus a walking aisle along one side for accessing the stored vehicle without moving the truck below.

For a shop doing active service work rather than storage, working clearance around the columns matters more than bay width. A two-post with a tech on either side of the vehicle needs 4 feet of aisle on both sides. Squeezing a two-post into a 10-foot bay technically works but you’re going to hate it every day. We push shops to plan the bay layout around the tech’s actual movement pattern, not just the equipment footprint on the drawing.

Install timing and the seasonal storage calendar

East-central Iowa seasonal storage runs late October through late March. Shops that want a car lift automotive setup operational for the first storage intake need to be committed to a purchase by early September at the latest, because we’re scheduling ten to twelve installs a month during Q3 and Q4 and the calendar fills. The shop we’re talking about called us in late August and we had him installed by October 8 — one week before his first storage customer wanted to drop off. That was tight scheduling on our end and it worked out, but it required him being decisive on the equipment choice within a week of the site survey.

Shops that call us in October wanting to be operational by November are almost always looking at a January install date instead. That’s not because we won’t work fast — we will — it’s because the freight lanes into Iowa slow down significantly in November as parts of the country hit weather. Order early, install in October, and you have your season without stress.

What the install day itself actually looks like

Once the site survey is done and the equipment is scheduled, install day itself takes six to eight hours for a two-post and eight to ten for a four-post. The east-central Iowa shop’s four-post install ran nine hours start to finish including the electrical drop. We arrived at 7:30 AM with the crated equipment and left at 4:45 PM with the lift commissioned, the safety walkthrough done with him, and the paperwork signed. He ran his first storage customer up onto the deck the next morning.

A car lift automotive install done right is boring to watch. There’s no drama, no last-minute surprises, and no debate about which end of the powerpack goes toward the wall. That’s what the site survey gets you — the boring, on-time, on-budget install day that just works. Skip the survey and you get drama on install day, and drama is expensive.
