A collector up in the Iowa Great Lakes region called us in March with a problem most people would love to have: eleven vehicles, a 36 by 48 outbuilding, and no good way to get under any of them. He’d been renting a bay in town every spring to run his fleet through annual state inspection work, and between the hauling, the scheduling, and the shop rate, it had gotten expensive and annoying. He wanted a car lift automotive setup that would let him do his own brake, exhaust, and undercarriage inspections in the winter and stack two of the seasonal cars in the summer. Here’s how his first year went, from layout sketch through the first real service session.

Why He Landed on a Four-Post Instead of a Two-Post
His first instinct was a two-post, because that’s what he’d used at the rental shop and it gave the best wheels-free access. We talked him out of it, and the reason had nothing to do with the lift and everything to do with his actual use pattern. He services vehicles maybe fifteen days a year. He stores vehicles 365 days a year. A two-post does one of those jobs and not the other.
A four-post carries the vehicle on its own tires, which means you can leave a car parked up there for six months without worrying about suspension loading or flat-spotting concerns the way you might with a vehicle hanging by its frame. Add a rolling jack and you get most of the wheels-free capability back for brake and suspension work. For a collector, that combination is hard to beat. The other factor was the slab. His building had a 4-inch pour with no thickened footings under the proposed column spots, which is marginal for a two-post but perfectly fine for a four-post that spreads load across four base plates and, in many configurations, doesn’t require anchoring at all if it’s freestanding. That single detail saved him a sawcut-and-pour job and moved his car lift automotive project from a maybe to a yes.
Sketching the Bay Layout on Graph Paper First
Before we quoted anything, we sat at his workbench with a tape measure and graph paper. This is the step almost everybody skips and almost everybody regrets. A four-post with runways is roughly 18 feet long and 9 feet wide in a common 9,000 lb configuration, and you need drive-on approach room at one end plus walking room on both sides.
In a 36-foot-deep building, an 18-foot lift plus 14 feet of approach leaves you four feet of slack. That’s tight but workable if the lift lives against the back wall and the overhead door is centered. What killed the first sketch was his air compressor and a rolling tool chest that had been parked in the same spot for a decade. Moving them opened up a clean 12-foot approach path. We also mapped where the vehicle doors would swing when a car was up at storage height, because the whole point of stacking is parking something underneath, and if the lower car’s doors hit a column you’ve built yourself a very expensive shelf. Two hours of graph paper prevented a permanent layout mistake. Anyone planning a car lift automotive install in a fixed-size building should do the same before ordering.
Ceiling Height and the Stacking Math
His building had 13 feet 6 inches to the bottom of the trusses. That sounds generous until you do the arithmetic. To park a second car underneath, you need the height of the lower vehicle, plus runway thickness, plus the height of the upper vehicle, plus a few inches of margin so nobody scrapes a roof.
His two candidates for the top slot were a 1969 muscle car at about 52 inches tall and a mid-2000s convertible at 51. Underneath, he wanted his daily-driver pickup, which stands 76 inches. Runway and carriage thickness added about 7 inches. Add it up: 76 plus 7 plus 52 equals 135 inches, or 11 feet 3 inches, leaving him a bit over two feet of headroom. Comfortable. Had he wanted to park a full-size SUV underneath a lifted truck, the math would have failed and we’d have told him so. Ceiling height is the hard constraint that no amount of clever layout fixes, and it’s the number we ask for first on every stacking inquiry. A car lift automotive project in a garage with 10-foot ceilings can still work beautifully for service, but the two-car storage dream usually isn’t happening. Better to hear that up front than after the freight arrives.
Install Week and the Caster Kit Debate
Install took our two-man crew a single long day. Four-posts are more forgiving than two-posts because you’re not depending on anchor pullout strength, but they’re fussier about level. If the four base plates aren’t shimmed to a common plane, the runways twist, the cables load unevenly, and the locks won’t drop into the same position on all four corners. We spent nearly two hours on shimming alone. His slab had a quarter-inch of slope toward the door, which is normal and good for drainage and a nuisance for lift setup.
The debate was casters. He wanted them so he could roll the whole unit out of the way when he needed open floor for a project car teardown. We install caster kits regularly and they work well, but there’s a tradeoff: a caster-equipped four-post has to be jacked up onto its feet before you load it heavy, and if you get lazy about that step you’re loading the lift through the casters, which they aren’t rated for. He bought the kit and, to his credit, has used it twice in a year. Most people who buy casters never move the lift at all. If mobility genuinely matters to your bay plan, buy them. If it’s a someday-maybe, put the money into a rolling jack instead.
The First Real Service Session: Six Cars, Two Days
In late October he ran six vehicles through pre-winter inspection and service. This was the test of whether his car lift automotive investment actually changed his workflow, and the honest answer is that it changed it more than he expected.
The old routine was trailer a car to town, wait, pick it up, repeat. The new routine was drive on, raise, inspect brakes and lines and exhaust, drop it, pull it out, next. He averaged well under two hours per vehicle including oil changes and a couple of brake jobs. The rolling jack earned its cost on car three, when he found a seized caliper slide on the convertible and needed the wheel off. Two things surprised him. First, drip containment: a 50-year-old car parked overhead will find a way to mark territory on whatever’s underneath, and he ended up buying drip trays after the first oil spot on his truck hood. Second, lighting. Overhead shop lights are useless when the thing you’re looking at is directly above you and the vehicle blocks them. He added two LED work lights on magnetic bases and a rechargeable underhood bar, which made undercarriage inspection dramatically less miserable.
Maintenance a Collector Actually Has to Do
Low-cycle lifts have a different failure profile than shop lifts. A dealership four-post might see 3,000 cycles a year and wear cables and sheaves. A collector’s unit might see 200 cycles and instead suffer from sitting still. Grease dries out. Cables develop surface rust where they pass over sheaves in humid summer air. Hydraulic seals get sticky. Rodents find the power unit wiring, which is a genuine issue in rural Iowa outbuildings.
We gave him a short list. Wipe and lightly oil the cables twice a year, spring and fall. Inspect every inch of cable for broken strands, corrosion, and flattening where it rides the sheave. Check sheave bearings for free rotation. Cycle the lift through full travel at least monthly even if you don’t need it, because that circulates fluid and keeps seals wet. Check the fluid level annually and look at its color, since milky fluid means water intrusion. Verify all four locks engage audibly at the same height. And keep the area under the columns clear, because debris that jams a lock is the most common thing we get called out for on residential units. None of it takes long. Skipping all of it for five years is how a perfectly good car lift automotive setup turns into a repair bill.
Year One Verdict and What It Cost Him
He’d do it again, and he told us his only regret was not going a foot longer on the runways. His longest vehicle is a full-size 1970s sedan that fits, but barely, with the front tires close to the ramp end. A slightly longer model was available and he passed to save a few hundred dollars. Same lesson as always: buy the size you’ll need in five years, not the size that fits today’s fleet.
All in, the equipment plus rolling jack, casters, drip trays, and install landed him in the range of a mid-tier used car, and he figures the savings on rented bay time and hauling will cover a meaningful chunk of it inside three or four years. That math ignores the part he values most, which is being able to walk out to the shop on a January evening and get under a car without hauling anything anywhere.
