A collector in northern Missouri reached out to us about eighteen months ago with a barn full of vehicles and a spreadsheet full of model numbers he could not make sense of. He had nine cars, a rotating project queue, and one specific job he was tired of doing on jack stands: shock and spring replacement on a pair of British roadsters. The Model Number Problem
Manufacturers name lifts with a code that usually embeds capacity and sometimes configuration, but the conventions differ enough between brands that cross-shopping is genuinely hard. A four-post rated at 9,000 lb from one company might have runways 158 inches long, while a competitor’s 9,000 lb model runs 172 inches with a wider overall footprint. Same headline number, very different building requirement. Add in variations like extended-height columns, open-front designs, and single-point lock releases, and a spreadsheet comparison stops being useful fast.
What we told this collector — and what we tell everyone — is to stop comparing capacity first and start comparing four dimensions: runway length, runway width, drive-through clearance between columns, and rise height. Then check whether the model supports a rolling jack, because that single accessory determines whether the lift can do suspension work or only storage. His barn had 11 feet of usable ceiling and a 10-foot door. That immediately eliminated the extended-height storage models he had been looking at, which need 12 feet or more to stack two cars. We ended up on a standard-height four-post with a rise around 68 inches, plus a rolling bridge jack rated to lift one axle clear of the runways.
Why a Four-Post Won for a Collection
Two-post lifts give better undercarriage access, and if he had been running a repair business we would have specified one. But a collection changes the math. Vehicles sit for months. Some of them have unibody structures where the factory pickup points are not obvious and the frame rails are thin from decades of road salt. Setting a two-post pad in the wrong place on a fifty-year-old car does not end well. A four-post takes the whole load on the tires, distributes it across the runways, and never asks you to guess about a pinch weld.
The other factor was storage. He wanted to park one car over another during winter, which is exactly what a four-post does well. Roll on, raise, park underneath, and you have doubled floor space in a building you cannot easily expand. Add caster kits and the lift can be repositioned when he rearranges the barn — a real feature when the collection changes. The tradeoff is that a four-post’s runways block access to the tires and lower suspension unless you lift an axle off them, which brings us back to the rolling jack. Install Day and the Things We Fixed on Site
Four-post installs are usually easier than two-post because they are freestanding — no anchoring required in most configurations, though we do anchor when the customer wants it fixed. What is never easy is a floor that is not flat. His barn slab had close to an inch and a half of fall across the twenty feet where the lift was going, which is normal for a building poured to drain. A four-post tolerates that better than a two-post, but the columns still need shimming so all four carriages track evenly and the locks engage at the same slot.
We laid a laser across the bay, found the high corner, and shimmed the other three columns with steel plates until the runways sat level within tolerance. Then we ran the cables, adjusted tension, filled the power unit, and cycled it empty a dozen times while watching each cable sheave. On a four-post, all four corners are lifted by one hydraulic cylinder through a cable system, so cable routing and equal tension are everything. If one cable is loose, that corner lags, the runway racks, and the lock on that column takes a shock load every cycle. We do not leave until all four corners rise and lower together. That took the better part of a day, plus another hour teaching him what to look at monthly.
Month Four: Suspension and Shock Replacement
The first real job was the reason he bought the equipment. He needed to replace shocks and rear springs on a roadster, and on a four-post that means the rolling jack comes out. He rolled the bridge jack into position under the rear axle, raised it until the tires lifted about four inches off the runways, and set the jack’s own mechanical lock. That is the step people skip. The rolling jack has its own lock separate from the lift’s column locks, and both need to be engaged before anyone reaches under the vehicle.
What he learned quickly is that positioning matters. On a short-wheelbase car, the bridge jack’s reach can be marginal, and the rails the jack rides on have to be adjusted to the runway spread. He also found that the jack pads that come standard are sized for modern frame rails and were too wide for the roadster’s lift points, so we sent him a set of adapters and a taller pad stack. Little stuff, but it is the difference between a productive Saturday and a frustrating one. By the end of that first year he had done shocks on four vehicles, a full brake job, and a fuel tank drop — all things that were miserable on stands. The First Service Call and What It Found
Around month ten he called because one corner was settling slightly overnight with a car parked up top. Not dramatically — maybe a half inch — but enough to notice. We drove down and found it was neither, exactly. Storage Habits That Extend Equipment Life
Collectors use lifts differently than shops do. A shop cycles a lift twenty times a day and the moving parts stay lubricated by use. A storage lift might sit loaded at one height for four months, then get lowered once. That is harder on some components and easier on others. Cables that sit under constant tension in one position develop a set and can corrode at the sheave contact points, especially in an unheated barn where humidity swings. Lock ladders collect dust and the latches get sticky.
Our advice to him, and to every collector we work with, is to cycle the empty lift through its full travel once a month even if nothing needs to move. Two minutes, and it keeps everything limber and lets you hear a problem before it becomes one. Lubricate the sheaves and lock latches twice a year with a light penetrating oil, not grease, because grease holds grit. Keep a drip tray under any vehicle parked up top, both to protect the car below and to keep fluid off the runway surface where it becomes a slip hazard. What Year Two Looks Like and What We Would Change
Eighteen months in, he has added a second set of drip trays, swapped to polyurethane caster wheels so he can reposition without gouging the slab, and ordered a longer approach ramp for a low-clearance car that was scraping. Nothing structural. The lift itself has needed no repairs beyond the routine service.
