A car collector in the Des Moines metro bought his first car lift automotive setup last spring and I promised him I would write about the first year of ownership because he made every rookie mistake and every smart move a first-time buyer could make. He owns eight cars in a five-car detached shop: three drivable classics from the 1960s, two modern sports cars, a project 1970s British roadster in pieces, and two daily drivers. The lift was the missing piece. He needed storage capacity for one of the modern sports cars and service access for the British project. The Original Bay Plan and What Changed

His original plan was a 2-post 10K in the middle of the shop with the British project as the resident vehicle on the lift. That plan lasted about three conversations. Once we walked through his actual workflow, storing one modern car above another during the winter, occasionally lifting the British project for suspension work, occasionally lifting a classic for oil pan or exhaust access, it was obvious the 2-post was wrong. He needed drive-on-and-store capability first, wheels-free capability second. That is the 4-post-with-rolling-jacks answer.

The car lift automotive that eventually shipped to him was a 9,000 lb 4-post storage lift with a pair of 6,000 lb rolling jacks. Runway length was standard because the longest car in his rotation was a mid-1960s American sedan at about 220 inches. Ceiling height in his shop was twelve feet flat, which was enough to store a Miata over any of the daily drivers with headroom to spare. Reworking the plan from 2-post to 4-post added about a quarter to the total cost and doubled the functional value.

Install Day and What Surprised Him

Install day ran seven hours from truck arrival to lift energized. Two of our techs, one supervising forklift and unloading, one running the anchor drill and column setup. He was there the whole day and had questions the whole day. The thing that surprised him most was how quiet the install was until the last hour. Anchoring is loud (rotary hammer drill on concrete for about twenty minutes total). Positioning columns, leveling, and cabling are almost silent. He had planned for a day of noise and got a day of watching techs work.

Second thing that surprised him: we did not do the electrical. His shop was pre-wired with a 220V circuit for a table saw about fifteen feet from the lift location. Perfect distance. We asked him to have an electrician tap that circuit into a 30-amp breaker with 10-gauge wire on install day. He had done it the week before. The power unit dropped in and energized on the first try. If he had waited until install day for the electrical, we would have done four hours of lift work and gone home for the day. A car lift automotive install runs on the assumption that power is ready.

The First Storage Cycle

Two weeks after install, he needed to put the Miata away for winter and get the modern sports car on the ground. First real storage cycle. He drove the Miata onto the lift, chocked the wheels, hit the up button. Lift stopped a couple of times, which is normal, the operator releases and re-hits up to check position. He lifted the Miata to about six feet, engaged the mechanical safety pins, and stopped the motor. Then he drove the modern sports car under it and parked. Total time: seven minutes.

He called me that night. Two questions. First, is it okay to leave the lift with a car on it for four months over the winter, engaged on the safety pins? Answer: yes, that is exactly what the safety pins are for. Never trust hydraulics alone for long-term storage; always drop to the pins. Second, does the lower vehicle need to be perfectly centered under the runways? Answer: no, the runways are wider than most vehicles, and as long as the doors clear the columns and posts, you are fine. The First Service Job: Suspension on the British Project

Month five, he tackled a full front-suspension rebuild on the 1970s British roadster. Lower control arms, upper control arms, springs, shocks, tie rod ends. He rolled the jacks into position, indexed them under the axle contact points, lifted the front of the car until the runways carried none of the load, and confirmed the mechanical latches on the rolling jacks were engaged.

He learned three things during that job. First, the rolling jacks take about five minutes to position correctly the first time, forty seconds every time after that once you know where the pickup points are on your specific vehicle. Second, the runway sees zero load once the rolling jacks are supporting the front, so you can actually walk under it safely. A job that would have taken him a full weekend on the floor took him a Saturday afternoon on the lift.

The Bay Layout That Emerged

By month eight, his shop had settled into a stable layout. The lift lived at the back of the fourth bay, oriented so a car drove in from the main door and pulled directly onto the runways. He built a rolling parts cart that fit between the columns. He hung an overhead LED strip directly over the lift. He mounted a small pegboard on the wall behind the lift for the tools he used constantly, torque wrench, breaker bar, socket set, magnetic pickup.

Bay-layout evolution is part of the first year with any car lift automotive purchase. Maintenance Milestones He Hit

Month one: we came back for the anchor re-torque, standard for any 4-post install. All twenty-four anchors held within a few foot-pounds of spec. Month three: he did his first cable inspection, walking each of the four cables at eye level, looking for broken wires, kinks, or corrosion. All clean. Month six: he cycled the lift under load a few extra times and listened for anything abnormal (creak, grind, hesitation). Everything sounded like month one. Month twelve: we came back for the annual inspection and re-torque check.

Twelve months of ownership, zero maintenance surprises. This is what happens when the install is done right and the operator follows the schedule. Cable-driven 4-post lifts are simple machines. If you do the basics, they last decades. He is on track for a twenty-five to thirty-year service life on this lift, which prices out to less than a hundred dollars per year of ownership on a mid-tier car lift automotive investment. That is the math of buying quality once.

What He Told Me to Tell Other First-Time Buyers

He asked me to pass along five things to anyone in the Des Moines metro shopping their first lift. One: measure your ceiling to the lowest obstruction, not the ridge, and share the number with the installer before quote. Two: get your 220V electrical done before install day, not on install day. Three: do not overthink 2-post versus 4-post; describe your workflow to the installer and let them recommend. Four: buy the rolling jacks with the 4-post even if you think you will only use it for storage; you will use them within a year. Five: schedule the anchor re-torque and put it on your calendar the day of install.
