A car restoration shop owner in Marion asked us this spring to walk him through a car lift automotive decision tree from budget to final configuration. He runs a small three-bay restoration shop specializing in 1960s and 1970s American iron, and his current lift situation was one old two-post inherited with the building plus a lot of floor jacks and stands. He was ready to modernize but wanted to think carefully about new versus used and about which mix of lifts would actually serve the restoration workflow. As an Iowa-based installer for Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas, we spend a lot of time on this kind of decision tree with restoration shops. Here is the version we walked him through.

Root node: what restoration work actually asks of a lift

Restoration work is different from daily service in a way that changes the lift decision at the root. In a service shop, a lift raises a car for an hour or two and lowers it. In a restoration shop, a car may live on a lift for days or weeks as the crew works through suspension, brake lines, exhaust, and floor pans. That extended duty cycle argues strongly for a four-post drive-on lift as the primary tool, with a two-post as the secondary for jobs that need wheels-free access. Most service-shop advice inverts that order.

The Marion shop was starting with the wrong mental model — the owner initially assumed the two-post would be primary because that is what the daily-service world talks about. Once we mapped the work flow onto both lift types, the four-post came out ahead for the majority of his hours. Suspension work, brake-line runs, floor-pan repair, exhaust replacement, and general chassis inspection are all fine from a drive-on runway with proper access holes. Only steering rack removal and full drivetrain drops need the two-post. That is a very different car lift automotive plan than a service shop would build.

Node A: new versus used four-post for the primary bay

Once the four-post is the primary bay, the new-versus-used question kicks in. A used four-post from the 1990s or early 2000s can be a solid buy if the frame is straight, the cables are recent, and the safety locks engage crisply. Rotary and Challenger four-posts from that era are widely available on the secondary market and often trade for 40 to 60 percent of comparable new prices. The trap is exactly the same as with any used lift — no certification sticker, mystery service history, or cracked concrete around the anchor pattern all mean walk away.

For the Marion shop, we found a solid used mid-1990s Rotary four-post through a shop-closing sale in a nearby town, verified the serial and the cable date codes, checked the frame for straightness with a laser, and repriced the deal after negotiation. That approach saved the owner meaningful dollars against a new lift and still gave him a lift with 20 more years of realistic service life ahead. The used route is not automatically wrong for a restoration shop. It requires a careful vetting process we would rather run for the owner than let him run alone.

Node B: two-post as secondary — probably new

The two-post is the secondary lift in a restoration shop, but when the shop needs it, they need it working perfectly. Suspension work involves loaded ball joints, tight control-arm bolts, and torqued fasteners that require the tech to be underneath with confidence. A worn used two-post with unknown lock reliability is not the place to save money in a restoration shop. That is the one line item we usually push toward new even when the owner is otherwise a comfortable used-equipment buyer.

For the Marion shop we quoted a new Rotary SPO10 or Challenger CL10 asymmetric 10,000 pound two-post at MAP as the secondary bay. The lift will not run at high duty cycle — probably a couple of days a week between four-post projects — but when it runs it needs to run clean. The three-stage front arms swing around the wider front-track dimensions on 1960s big-block cars, which older symmetric two-posts do not always accommodate well. Restoration shops working on wider vintage cars appreciate the arm geometry more than the average service shop.

Node C: what about a mid-rise scissor

Mid-rise scissor lifts are tempting for restoration shops because they are compact, easy to move (on the mobile variants), and great for suspension work at bench height. The question is whether they earn their space in a shop that already has a four-post and a two-post. Our honest answer for most three-bay restoration shops is no — the mid-rise adds capability that overlaps too much with the four-post to justify the floor space. In a two-bay shop it might make the cut. In a three-bay shop the space is better used for a good workbench and a rolling parts cart.

The Marion owner considered the mid-rise briefly and decided the space would be better used for a proper media-blast cabinet and a paint prep area. That is exactly the right decision framework for a restoration shop — every square foot of floor competes with tooling that produces revenue. We would rather advise a restoration shop to skip a lift than push a lift the shop will not use often. The car lift automotive market has plenty of hardware options. Only some of them fit any particular shop’s workflow.

Node D: suspension and shock replacement geometry

Suspension work is the specific job that defines much of the lift geometry conversation for restoration shops. A big-block 1969 Chevy with a leaf-spring rear and coil-spring front sits on a lift differently than a modern sedan. The wheelbase is longer, the ride height is often lower, and the frame rails are wider apart than modern unibody cars. Four-post runway spacing at about 40 inches inside-to-inside handles most classic American iron with room to walk between the wheels. A narrow four-post designed for compact daily drivers can be tight on a full-size car.

We specify the wider runway spacing for restoration-shop four-posts as a default. On the two-post secondary bay, the asymmetric front arms give room to open the driver door on a wider vintage car — a symmetric two-post can pin the door against the column on a wide-body classic. Small details like that are the difference between a car lift automotive purchase that feels right for restoration work and one that feels like a compromise every day. We would rather over-specify the geometry on day one than watch the shop fight it for a decade.

Node E: budget staging across two purchases

Restoration shops often stage the lift purchase across two orders because cash flow is uneven. We recommend buying the four-post first if the owner is on a tight budget, because the four-post enables long-term project storage and drives the most hours. The two-post can wait six or twelve months as the shop generates cash from projects worked on the four-post. That staging pattern is exactly what the Marion shop chose — used four-post in the spring, plan for the new two-post in the fall after two projects wrapped.

Staging also means the shop can pace the electrical and slab work. Adding a two-post six months after the four-post is more disruptive than doing both at once because the shop is running production during install. We handle that by scheduling the two-post install on a shop-closed weekend and pre-running the electrical during weekday evenings so the disruption is minimal. That approach is common enough that we build a two-phase install plan whenever a shop asks. It keeps the car lift automotive investment moving without stopping revenue.

What the Marion shop actually built

The Marion restoration shop’s final configuration was a solid used mid-1990s Rotary four-post with new cables and fresh certification as the primary bay, and a plan to add a new Rotary SPO10 asymmetric 10,000 pound two-post in the fall after the current two big projects wrapped. Total spring investment was less than half of what a matching pair of new lifts would have cost. Total year-end investment after the two-post addition will still come in under a matched-new package because the used four-post buy was well-vetted and priced right.
